Part 2: H1606026_Kitten abandoned by owner in cold rainy weather is lucky to be sa Ferrari 296 GTB 2025: A Benchmark for Hybrid Supercars Amidst Evolving Competition The Ferrari 296 GTB, introduced in 2022, continues to be a formidable presence in the supercar segment, even as rivals with significantly higher power outputs emerge. This mid-engined marvel represents a pivotal shift for Ferrari, replacing the acclaimed twin-turbo V8 with a potent new twin-turbo V6 augmented by electric power. This strategic move positions the 296 GTB at the forefront of a segment undergoing a rapid transition towards hybridisation. Initially, the 296 GTB competed with traditional supercars like the Lamborghini Huracán, renowned for its naturally aspirated V10 charisma, and the McLaren 720S, which featured a twin-turbo V8. However, the impending arrival of the 903bhp, 10,000rpm twin-turbo V8 hybrid Lamborghini Temerario signals an intensified rivalry, directly challenging Ferrari’s hybridised Berlinetta, which produces 819bhp. The 296 GTB’s groundbreaking powertrain, a 120-degree twin-turbo V6 paired with an electric motor driving only the rear wheels, redefines supercar conventions with its headline 819bhp output. This innovative V6 is the first in a Ferrari road car (excluding the Dino badged models), features a ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger configuration, and offers approximately 15 miles of electric-only range as a plug-in hybrid. Mounted low in a new aluminium chassis, the wheelbase has been reduced by 50mm compared to V8 predecessors, with occupants positioned slightly further forward. The electric motor contributes 165bhp and 232lb ft of torque, while the V6 alone delivers an impressive 654bhp and 546lb ft. Ferrari deliberately omits a combined peak torque figure, likely due to the complex interplay between the engine and electric motor, though it is understood to be substantial. The V6 unit offers a 30kg weight saving over Ferrari’s V8s and is mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The battery pack, a long rectangular structure, is housed behind the seats.
Ferrari’s sophisticated electronic chassis systems are further exemplified by the new six-axis sensor, the 6w-CDS. This advanced system, measuring acceleration and rotational speed across three planes, replaces traditional yaw sensors. In conjunction with a steering rack sensor, it provides comprehensive data on driver inputs and tire grip levels. This information is used to optimize systems such as Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, enhancing cornering speeds while maintaining stability. The 6w-CDS also enables the new ABS-evo system, which, in RACE mode and above, utilizes the 296’s brake-by-wire setup to shorten braking distances and improve performance during trail braking. For the first time, Ferrari employs active aerodynamics to generate downforce rather than reduce drag. The car produces a claimed 360kg of downforce at 155mph, with the deployable rear wing contributing up to 100kg. The cooling system is extensive, featuring two radiators in the front for engine and gearbox, and two condensers for battery cooling. Hot air is expelled from the underbody to avoid interference with intercooler airflow. Small apertures below the headlights direct air to the brakes, while a roofline-integrated wing creates a virtual rear screen to channel air towards the rear of the car. The majority of downforce is generated from beneath the car, with specific attention paid to the underbody channeling, rear diffuser, and ground clearance to maximize the effectiveness of downforce-generating surfaces. The Assetto Fiorano pack, fitted to early circuit-tested models, includes Multimatic dampers derived from GT racing and additional carbon fibre aerodynamic elements on the nose that increase front downforce by 20kg. This package also incorporates more carbon fibre in the cabin and exterior, resulting in a 12kg weight saving, which increases to 15kg with the optional Lexan rear engine cover. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires can be specified as an alternative to the standard Pilot Sport 4S. The Assetto Fiorano pack also offers an exterior graphics package inspired by the 1960s 250LM. Visually, the 296 GTB is a striking and distinctive design, evoking the spirit of the 250LM even without the optional graphics. Performance and Driving Dynamics Initiating drive in the 296 GTB involves a double press of a button on the steering wheel boss and selecting first gear. The car defaults to Hybrid mode, engaging electric propulsion unless otherwise directed via the haptic controls. With moderate throttle input and sufficient battery charge, purely electric driving is sustained. The car can be manually forced into EV mode, or the driver can select Performance or Qualifying modes, which engage both power sources for maximum output. In Performance mode, the system prioritizes performance while maintaining battery charge, whereas Qualifying mode focuses solely on ultimate performance, disregarding battery state. The 296 GTB offers an unexpectedly refined and comfortable driving experience, capable of quiet cruising through urban environments. The damping sophistication contributes to its comfort over longer distances, and a practical luggage compartment is present in the front ‘frunk’. Under hard acceleration, the 296 GTB demonstrates remarkable immediacy, delivering potent acceleration from low revs with virtually no perceptible lag. Despite the eight-speed gearbox and the V6’s 8500rpm redline, the overwhelming surge of power, particularly when the hybrid system is fully engaged, is described as startling. The acceleration is intense, bordering on overwhelming, yet simultaneously addictive, solidifying its status as a seriously rapid machine. The auditory experience complements the performance, with turbocharger sound effects layering over the V6’s melodious rasp. Ride and Handling The 296 GTB’s chassis exhibits exceptional responsiveness, aligning with Ferrari’s objective of creating a “fun to drive” vehicle. It achieves a high level of agility without inducing nervousness. The steering is characteristic of Ferrari – light and fast, yet communicative, providing detailed feedback. Despite the immense grip levels, the car remains throttle-adjustable, encouraging driver engagement and generating significant enjoyment. The perceived lightness of the car, despite its 1470kg (dry) weight, is remarkable. A lack of inertia allows for precise and accurate inputs, making it a truly engaging driving experience. The CT Off mode offers a significant degree of freedom, with the reassurance of advanced electronic safety nets. Even with all electronic aids deactivated, the 296’s natural balance facilitates controlled oversteer, a feat not typically associated with vehicles of this power output. On track, the 296 GTB dramatically reduces the perceived length of straights. Its sharp, precise nature is evident, with the power readily available to break rear traction at numerous points. However, the car is highly sensitive to braking and steering inputs, rewarding accuracy and control. The turn-in accuracy and response are exceptional, shortening the corner entry phase. The car settles instantly into corners, complemented by the hyper-quick steering and the enhanced roll support of the Assetto Fiorano setup. The speed, precision, and agility of the 296 GTB are phenomenal, offering a consistently exhilarating experience. Interior The interior architecture of the 296 GTB closely mirrors that of the SF90, featuring a fully digital interface and haptic switchgear. While this setup is undoubtedly complex, it conveys a vast amount of information. However, the operation of some simple functions can be challenging, occasionally requiring multiple attempts to register or providing uncertain feedback on successful activation. Despite these usability challenges, the cabin conveys a sense of occasion. Verdict: evo Car of the Year 2022
In the evo Car of the Year 2022 competition, the Ferrari 296 GTB narrowly missed out on victory, tying for third place with the McLaren Artura. Judges were divided, with three favouring the Ferrari and three the McLaren. Those who ranked the 296 GTB higher praised its spectacular design, outrageous speed, exploitable performance, and technical sophistication. The V6 engine was seen as an example of successful downsizing with increased drama, and the car was noted for its precise control and more playful, indulgent character compared to the Artura. The styling was described as a return to form for Ferrari, with many echoing the sentiment that it was the first truly beautiful Ferrari since the F355. The hybrid system was lauded for its seamless integration and minimal impact on the driving experience, a characteristic attributed to prior familiarity with the torque of turbocharged V8 engines. The 296 GTB’s rapid acceleration was highlighted, but its appeal extends beyond mere speed, thanks to the characterful V6 and its adaptable soundtrack. A significant concern raised was an instance where the car was left stranded due to a flat battery, despite Ferrari’s prior warnings and guidance. This led to criticism regarding the lack of a simple fail-safe mechanism to prevent such a situation. Fortunately, this incident occurred after the scoring was completed. Ferrari’s signature ultra-quick steering divided opinion, and the brake feel was considered not to match the very best in its class. The technological interface also received criticism for its complexity. Nevertheless, the 296 GTB was deemed irresistibly seductive, with particular praise for its uncanny directional changes, exceptional damping, immense grip, and the linearity of its seemingly endless power delivery. The 296 GTB represents a significant success for Ferrari, particularly in contrast to the SF90, which failed to impress the previous year. The technical sophistication and hybrid integration of the 296 GTB were deemed far more natural and less intrusive. It is considered a distillation of lessons learned from the SF90, resulting in one of Ferrari’s finest series production models. Price and Rivals The integration of advanced technology in a vehicle carries the inherent risk of it becoming less than the sum of its parts, a characteristic observed in the SF90. However, the 296 GTB distinguishes itself by feeling more organic, striking an optimal balance between power and engaging dynamics, thereby redefining the £250,000 supercar segment. A more potent Versione Speciale variant is anticipated. Ferrari hopes that Lamborghini has prioritized similar attributes in the development of its hybrid Temerario supercar. With over 900bhp, the Temerario’s power output presents a significant challenge, potentially overwhelming the chassis if not perfectly resolved. Given Lamborghini’s success with the Revuelto, there is optimism for the Temerario. A potential triple-threat comparison including the McLaren 750S, with its 740bhp and 1389kg kerb weight, would highlight the McLaren’s competitive power-to-weight ratio, rawness, ergonomic design, crisp steering, and deft chassis control, which contrast with the Ferrari’s comparative remoteness.
