This twin-turbo V12 confection, capable of 217mph, is a testament to advanced composites and exotic alloys. While More’s vision remained an abstract concept, Pagani’s Utopia is a tangible reality for the 99 fortunate individuals who have secured a coupe build slot, with some also opting for the Roadster variant. The unveiling of an all-new Pagani model is a rare event, akin to the unveiling of a master artist’s new work. The Utopia is only the third new model line to emerge from Pagani’s San Cesario sul Panaro facility in 26 years, and its arrival has been met with considerable anticipation.
Since evo’s initial visit in 1999, Pagani has undergone significant development. The company’s current impressive headquarters, the “Atelier,” encompassing an impressive HQ and museum, opened in 2017. The Utopia experience commenced from the passenger seat, alongside Pagani’s R&D test driver, Alberto Scilla. This initial phase provided an invaluable opportunity to observe the car’s behavior and performance dynamics before taking the helm.
The Futa Pass, a celebrated route near Pagani’s HQ and a section of the historic Mille Miglia, served as the ideal setting for an initial exploration of the Utopia’s capabilities, allowing for a more discreet immersion into its performance envelope. Accompanied by Aston Parrott and Pagani PR Sebastian Berridi in the camera car, Scilla expertly navigated the initial stages out of Modena and onto the autostrada. The sensation was one of exhilaration, almost as if experiencing a hypercar for the first time.
Even from the passenger seat, the Utopia delivers a sublime experience. Its ride quality is surprisingly supple, and while the V12 engine’s presence is always felt, it remains unobtrusive at lower speeds and with minimal throttle input, yet its immense power is readily accessible when demanded. Pagani has consistently prioritized road-car usability, and the Utopia elevates this with a new level of refinement seamlessly integrated with breathtaking performance.
Significant effort has been dedicated to perfecting the manual transmission, focusing on both shift quality and clutch feel. Managing 811 lb-ft of torque demands exceptional engineering to develop a manual gearbox that complements the traditional driver engagement of a stick shift. Scilla’s fluid gear changes demonstrated the Utopia’s exceptional lightness of touch.
Cruising along the autostrada, the Utopia effortlessly commands attention, its presence parting traffic like a revered entity. Occasional, deliberate downshifts and moderate throttle applications elicit a symphony from the 6-litre twin-turbo V12. Upon stopping for fuel, the Utopia’s magnetic allure became evident as onlookers materialized, eager to capture its image. Despite having spent considerable time within the car, the visual spectacle remained captivating. Eschewing overt aerodynamic appendages, the Utopia prioritizes an artistic interpretation of form, a celebration of purity enhanced by lavish embellishments and striking design flourishes. This unique fusion defines Pagani’s distinctive aesthetic.
The satisfyingly weighty Utopia-shaped key, a tactile delight, did little to diminish the driver’s continued fascination with the car’s sweeping contours. Every exterior and interior brightwork component is meticulously machined from billet, imbuing the car with a jewelry-like quality and the impression of being sculpted from a single piece of material.
The dihedral doors, a departure from the Huayra’s gullwings and the Zonda’s conventional hinges, open to reveal an extraordinary cockpit. A “Supersoft” mode offers a quick selection of the most compliant suspension setting, akin to Ferrari’s bumpy road button. The semi-active TracTive dampers provide an impressive balance of bump absorption and body control, making frequent use of this mode unnecessary. Sport mode injects a dynamic feel without compromising composure, with the ESC providing subtle oversight on corner exits, ensuring blistering progress, especially when paired with the Pirelli P Zero Corsas.

Accelerating through the Utopia’s gears is an exhilarating experience. The AMG-designed, hand-built Pagani V12, with a redline of 6700rpm, offers a visceral experience with each gear change. Third and fourth gears are frequently utilized, with occasional excursions into fifth and second. In Race mode, the V12’s roar intensifies, accompanied by intricate induction and turbocharger sounds during throttle modulation. Power-to-weight ratios, while informative, do not tell the complete story. The 1280kg dry (1340kg wet) Utopia, with its 852bhp and 811 lb-ft of torque, may be numerically surpassed by certain EV hypercars, but its lighter mass contributes to a feeling of constant energy and alertness.
On demanding stretches of the Futa Pass, this translates to colossal potency between corners, coupled with exceptional performance under braking and through turns. The massive 410mm front and 390mm rear Brembo CCM-R brakes, with their six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers, deliver progressive clamping force to the substantial carbon rotors. They are easily modulated at low speeds and provide immense stopping power at higher velocities, with a consistently firm pedal offering unwavering confidence.
The magic of the Utopia lies in its ability to transcend conventional hypercar doctrine. Driving the Pagani Utopia Roadster
While Pagani has previously produced open-top versions of the Zonda and Huayra, the Utopia marks the first time the coupe and Roadster design processes have been conducted concurrently. This integrated approach has resulted in a vehicle with even fewer compromises. The dry weight remains an identical 1280kg, and Pagani’s expertise in carbonfibre construction ensures the bespoke tub retains exceptional rigidity without requiring additional reinforcement. Like the coupe, the Utopia Roadster benefits from worldwide homologation for safety and emissions standards.
Build numbers and pricing have been adjusted for the Roadster, with each of the 130 units priced at £3.1 million. Production is projected to be between 50 and 60 cars per year.
