H2604012_Girl adopts piglet abandoned by its mother #anim The Prancing Horse Reimagined: A Deep Dive into the Ferrari 296 GTB and the Evolving Supercar Landscape For a decade now, the automotive world has witnessed a seismic shift, a fundamental redefinition of what constitutes the pinnacle of performance and desirability. As an industry veteran with ten years immersed in the hypercar trenches, I’ve seen fleeting trends rise and fall, but few transformations have been as profound as the recent embrace of electrification by even the most traditional performance marques. At the heart of this revolution stands the Ferrari 296 GTB, a machine that, since its 2022 debut, has not merely kept pace but has actively dictated the terms of engagement in the ultra-high-performance segment. Its stunning blend of V6 ferocity and plug-in hybrid sophistication continues to captivate, even as the horizon promises even more potent challengers.
The arrival of the Ferrari 296 GTB marked an unprecedented departure for Maranello’s mid-engined supercar lineage. Shedding the beloved, multi-award-winning twin-turbo V8 in favor of a brand-new twin-turbocharged V6, augmented by an electric motor, the 296 GTB boldly charted a course into a sector still hesitantly navigating the waters of hybrid power. In its halcyon days, its most direct competitor was the Lamborghini Huracán, a naturally aspirated V10 symphony that, while lower on comparative horsepower, offered an intoxicating blend of charismatic noise and raw V10 allure. Alongside it often stood the McLaren 720S, a twin-turbo V8 behemoth that championed power-to-weight supremacy. Now, however, the landscape has dramatically shifted. The 903bhp, 10,000rpm twin-turbo V8 hybrid Lamborghini Temerario emerges not just as a rival, but as a direct riposte to the 819bhp hybridised Berlinetta from Maranello, representing a bold new frontier in supercar technology. Indeed, the Ferrari 296 GTB commands formidable firepower. Its all-new 120-degree, twin-turbo V6, when paired with its electric motor, unleashes a staggering 819bhp, driving solely the rear wheels – a significant departure from the all-wheel-drive setup of the SF90. This configuration fundamentally rewrites the supercar playbook, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. While the sheer magnitude of its power output is enough to leave one pondering the ultimate trajectory of performance escalation – and indeed, where such potency can be fully exploited on public roads – these are questions for another discussion. What’s undeniable is the significance of the 296 GTB’s engineering. It represents Ferrari’s first V6-powered road car (the sublime 246 GT Dino, of course, never bore the iconic Prancing Horse emblem in its era). It pioneers Ferrari’s ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger arrangement and, crucially, integrates a plug-in hybrid system offering a commendable EV-only range of approximately 15 miles. This compact V6 is nestled low within a newly conceived aluminum chassis, featuring a wheelbase shortened by 50mm compared to its V8 predecessors, with occupants positioned slightly further forward. The electric motor itself contributes an impressive 165bhp and 232lb ft of torque. On its own, the V6 produces a remarkable 654bhp and 546lb ft. While Ferrari astutely refrains from quoting a combined peak torque figure, likely due to the intricate interplay between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor, it’s safe to assume this figure is nothing short of immense. In total, the V6 powertrain offers a weight saving of 30kg over Ferrari’s V8s and is mated to a lightning-fast eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The battery pack, a sleek, elongated unit, resides discreetly behind the seats. No Ferrari would be complete without an arsenal of acronyms denoting its cutting-edge electronic chassis control systems. For the 296, Ferrari has developed an innovative six-axis sensor suite, dubbed 6w-CDS. This advanced system meticulously measures acceleration and rotational velocity across the X, Y, and Z planes, effectively supplanting traditional yaw sensors. In conjunction with a sensor integrated into the steering rack, it provides the car with an unparalleled understanding of both driver intent and the instantaneous grip levels at the tire contact patch. This intelligence feeds into systems like Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, working in concert to maximize cornering speeds while steadfastly preserving stability and driver confidence. This sophisticated integration also enables the novel ABS-evo system, activated in RACE mode and above. Employing the 296’s brake-by-wire technology, ABS-evo not only shortens braking distances but also enhances braking performance during trail-braking maneuvers into corners, a crucial element for precision driving in modern performance cars. For the first time in its history, Ferrari is leveraging its active aerodynamics not for drag reduction, but for an increase in downforce. The company quotes a formidable 360kg of downforce at 155mph, with a remarkable 100kg of this generated by a deployable rear wing. The car’s cooling architecture is equally advanced, featuring two radiators in the nose for engine and gearbox heat management, complemented by two additional condensers dedicated to battery cooling. Hot air is strategically expelled beneath the car to avoid disrupting the airflow directed towards the intercoolers along the flanks. Small apertures beneath the headlamps are dedicated to cooling the brakes, while a roofline-integrated wing creates a ‘virtual’ rear screen, effectively guiding air towards the rear of the vehicle as if it were flowing over a precisely sculpted surface. The majority of the 296’s downforce, however, originates from beneath the car. Here, meticulous attention has been paid not only to air channeling and the rear diffuser but also to the underbody’s ground clearance, optimizing the effectiveness of these downforce-generating elements. The 296 GTBs we sampled on a circuit during their launch were all equipped with the optional Assetto Fiorano package. This performance-oriented upgrade replaces the standard dampers with Multimatic units, derived from Ferrari’s GT racing endeavors. It also adds further carbon fiber aerodynamic enhancements to the front, contributing an additional 20kg of downforce. Inside and out, more carbon fiber accents are present, contributing to an overall weight saving of 12kg. This figure can increase to 15kg if the optional Lexan rear engine cover is specified. Further enhancing the Assetto Fiorano’s sporting credentials, customers can opt for Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, a significant step up from the standard Pilot Sport 4S. The Fiorano package also offers an exterior graphics option, inspired by the iconic 250LM from the 1960s, adding a touch of racing heritage. Visually, the 296 GTB is a striking machine, possessing a unique aesthetic that evokes the spirit of the 250LM, even without the more flamboyant graphics. It’s a design that stands apart, a testament to Ferrari’s enduring commitment to automotive artistry. Initiating movement in the 296 GTB is an intuitive affair. A double press on the lower section of the steering wheel boss engages first gear. The car defaults to Hybrid mode, silently gliding away on electric power unless the driver explicitly selects otherwise via the haptic driver mode selectors on the wheel’s boss. As long as throttle inputs remain measured, electric-only propulsion persists, provided the battery has sufficient charge. For those seeking pure electric locomotion, a dedicated EV mode can be engaged, irrespective of powertrain demands. Further enhancing the driving experience are the Performance and Qualifying modes. In Performance mode, both power sources collaborate with the dual objective of delivering exhilarating acceleration while simultaneously replenishing the battery. Qualifying mode, however, prioritizes unadulterated, ultimate performance, with the battery’s state of charge becoming a secondary concern. The serene experience of gliding through picturesque villages, powered solely by electricity, is an unexpected delight. The damping sophistication ensures a remarkably comfortable ride, making long journeys a genuine pleasure. The front ‘frunk’ offers a surprisingly practical luggage space, a welcome convenience absent in the SF90. However, the true revelation lies in unleashing the full fury of the combined powertrain. A forceful application of the throttle at low revs, even in a higher gear, elicits an immediate and ferocious surge forward, momentarily making one question the necessity of gear changes such is its sheer potency. Yet, with eight gears at its disposal and an engine that willingly spins to 8500rpm, the full sensory assault when the 296 is truly uncorked is nothing short of astonishing. The acceleration figures – a blistering 0-62mph sprint in the low 2-second range and a top speed exceeding 200mph – translate into an experience of exhilarating, almost overwhelming, rapidity. This is a seriously rapid machine, accompanied by a glorious soundtrack that artfully blends the evocative sounds of turbochargers with the melodious rasp of the V6. For enthusiasts seeking electric supercar performance coupled with traditional engine character, the 296 GTB stands as a beacon. What truly distinguishes the 296 GTB is the exceptional responsiveness of its chassis. Ferrari’s claim of making this car “fun to drive” is not hyperbole; it’s a tangible reality. The car feels remarkably agile without succumbing to nervousness. The steering, typically light and rapid, is also imbued with an impressive level of tactile feedback. While grip levels are predictably prodigious, the car remains delightfully throttle-adjustable, fostering an infectious sense of driver engagement that is guaranteed to bring a smile to any enthusiast’s face. Despite its dry weight of 1470kg, the 296 exhibits a remarkable lack of inertia, encouraging fluid, precise inputs and a deep connection with the road. The CT Off mode offers a safety net, allowing for daring maneuvers with the reassuring knowledge of an intelligent electronic guardian. Yet, even with all electronic aids deactivated, the 296’s inherent balance allows for nuanced oversteer manipulation, a feat almost unimaginable in a car producing such prodigious power. On the track, the 296 possesses the uncanny ability to make even lengthy straights feel condensed. Its sharp, surgical precision becomes acutely apparent. While the power is readily available to break rear-end traction at numerous points around the lap, the car is exceptionally sensitive to braking and steering inputs. Mastering this sensitivity through precise control unlocks the car’s true potential. The turn-in accuracy and responsiveness dramatically shorten the entry phase of every corner. Instead of easing into turns and allowing loads to build gradually, the 296 settles instantaneously, its Multimatic dampers and hyper-quick steering harmonizing perfectly with the enhanced roll support of the Assetto Fiorano setup. Even for those accustomed to more mature sports cars, the sheer speed, precision, and agility of the 296 GTB are phenomenal, offering an intoxicating experience lap after lap. This focus on driver engagement in hybrid supercars sets a new benchmark. The interior architecture of the 296 GTB will feel familiar to anyone who has experienced the SF90, as it borrows heavily from that hypercar. The fully digital interface, complemented by haptic switchgear liberally applied to the steering wheel and traditional Ferrari pods flanking it, presents a learning curve. While undoubtedly complex, it’s designed to convey a vast amount of information. The primary challenge lies in the occasional need for a second press for simple operations to register, or the uncertainty of whether a press has been successfully acknowledged. Nevertheless, it remains a special and technologically advanced place to inhabit, representing the cutting edge of luxury supercar interiors.
In our 2022 evo Car of the Year awards, the competition was fierce. The McLaren Artura and the 296 GTB were separated by the slimmest of margins, with judges equally divided. Those who favored the Ferrari, including myself, lauded its spectacular nature: “Beautiful to look at, outrageously fast, amazingly exploitable, and so technically clever,” commented Jethro, emphasizing how its V6 demonstrated to McLaren how to downsize while amplifying the drama, and how it matched the Artura’s control with a more playful, indulgent feel. Richard likened it to “the first genuinely beautiful Ferrari since the F355,” praising the seamless integration of the hybrid system, which proved less intrusive than feared, likely due to our growing familiarity with the torque characteristics of turbocharged V8s. He described the 296 as “stonkingly quick” but noted that its appeal transcended mere speed, attributing this to the V6’s character and its always-sweet soundtrack that evolves with throttle input. The Ferrari’s hybridisation was widely celebrated for its seamless integration. However, a notable incident saw the car stranded after the battery depleted with no apparent means of revival. While Ferrari had pre-emptively warned of such possibilities and provided guidance, it raised concerns about potential owner inconvenience. As Gallagher noted, “that the company who introduced individual rear-wheel steering to its cars can’t engineer a simple fail-safe to prevent this happening is a huge oversight.” Fortunately, this occurred after scoring, but it highlighted a potential vulnerability. Despite this, the Ferrari’s signature super-quick steering divided opinion, brake feel wasn’t universally lauded against the very best in the group, and the tech interface faced criticism for its complexity. Yet, its seductive qualities were undeniable. Vivian confessed to being “somewhat bewitched,” captivated by its “spooky way it changes direction, its amazing damping, and looney-tunes levels of grip, the linearity of seemingly never-ending power…” This marked a significant return to form for Ferrari, especially after the SF90 left a less impactful impression the previous year. As Sutcliffe observed, “The 296 is way more successful because its technical sophistication, and the integration of its hybrid technology in particular, feels much more natural, and far less intrusive.” Gallagher concurred, stating, “Ferrari has taken so much from the SF90, learnt from that car and distilled it into a series production model that’s one of its very best.” This collective sentiment underscores the 296 GTB’s success in harmonizing groundbreaking technology with the quintessential Ferrari driving experience. For those in California supercar showrooms or seeking European performance vehicles, the 296 GTB represents a pinnacle. When a vehicle is so densely packed with advanced technology, there’s always a latent risk of it becoming less than the sum of its parts, a pitfall we observed with the SF90, which, despite its dazzling power, felt somewhat inscrutable in its driving characteristics. The 296 GTB, however, charts a different course. As evidenced by its joint third-place finish in our 2022 eCoty alongside the McLaren Artura, it feels far more organic. Its potent blend of power and engaging dynamics strikes an exquisite balance, redefining expectations for a supercar in the £250,000 price bracket. A more extreme variant, codenamed “Versione Speciale,” is anticipated, promising even greater potency and intensity. Our fervent hope is that the standard 296’s remarkably natural feel will be preserved. It is precisely this aspect of the 296 GTB’s inherent character that we hope Lamborghini has meticulously honed in its hybrid Temerario supercar. Over 900bhp is an almost obscene amount of power for a series-production supercar, capable of easily corrupting the driving experience if the rest of the car isn’t resolved to match it. If Lamborghini has indeed achieved this parity – and the sheer brilliance of the Revuelto offers ample reason for optimism – then we are poised for an extraordinary twin test, potentially featuring a combined output of over 1700bhp! Or perhaps a staggering 2400bhp triple threat, including the McLaren 750S, which, by comparison, might seem like the ‘minnow’ of the class with its 740bhp. However, its relatively svelte 1389kg kerb weight ensures a competitive power-to-weight ratio. The McLaren’s raw immediacy, ergonomic perfection, razor-sharp steering, and deft chassis control undeniably set it apart from the comparatively more remote-feeling Ferrari. For discerning collectors and enthusiasts seeking the ultimate driving machine, understanding these nuances is paramount.
