The 2025 Ferrari 296 GTB: Electrifying the Supercar Paradigm and Setting the Bar for Performance Hybrids For a decade now, I’ve been immersed in the exhilarating world of automotive engineering and pe
rformance vehicles. In that time, I’ve witnessed seismic shifts, from the relentless pursuit of V8 supremacy to the nascent whispers of electrification. Yet, few moments have been as transformative as the arrival of Ferrari’s 296 GTB. It’s a machine that doesn’t just push boundaries; it redraws them entirely, offering a glimpse into the future of hybrid supercars, even as formidable rivals like the anticipated Lamborghini Temerario prepare to enter the arena. The supercar landscape, a realm historically dominated by naturally aspirated V10s and potent twin-turbo V8s, has seen unprecedented evolution. Ferrari, a marque synonymous with combustion engine mastery, took a bold and, at the time, somewhat controversial leap with the 296 GTB in 2022. It bade farewell to its celebrated multi-award-winning twin-turbo V8, embracing a revolutionary new twin-turbocharged V6 powerplant, meticulously augmented by electric power. This strategic shift positioned the 296 GTB at the vanguard of a segment that was only just beginning its inexorable transition towards hybrid powertrains. At its debut, the 296 GTB’s most direct competitor was the Lamborghini Huracán, a titan in its own right, powered by the evocative naturally aspirated V10. While the Huracán offered raw acoustic charisma and a visceral connection to its engine, it paled in comparison to the 296 GTB’s sheer output. Also in the mix was the formidable McLaren 720S, a benchmark for twin-turbo V8 performance and an exemplar of power-to-weight mastery. While the subsequent McLaren 750S represents an evolutionary refinement of its predecessor, the imminent 903bhp, 10,000rpm hybrid Temerario from Lamborghini is a clear and direct riposte to Maranello’s 819bhp electrified Berlinetta. Make no mistake, the 296 GTB is armed with prodigious firepower. Its all-new, 120-degree, twin-turbo V6 engine, coupled with an electric motor, drives exclusively the rear wheels – a departure from the all-wheel-drive configuration of the SF90. This potent combination yields a staggering 819bhp, a figure that shattered established supercar conventions and continues to astound. The sheer magnitude of this output invites contemplation: where will this relentless power escalation ultimately lead, and more importantly, where can such performance be truly unleashed and appreciated? These are questions that tantalize the enthusiast’s mind. The 296 GTB marks a significant milestone as Ferrari’s first V6-powered road car. While the delightful 246 GT Dino bore a distinct identity, it never officially wore the Prancing Horse emblem. This new V6 also pioneers a “hot-vee” turbocharger arrangement – where the turbos are mounted within the cylinder banks – a configuration designed for compactness and improved responsiveness. Furthermore, it is a plug-in hybrid, offering an electric-only range of approximately 15 miles. This compact V6 is nestled low within a bespoke aluminum chassis, featuring a wheelbase shortened by 50mm compared to its V8 predecessors, subtly repositioning the occupants slightly further forward.
The electric motor itself contributes a formidable 165bhp and 232 lb-ft of torque, while the V6 alone churns out a remarkable 654bhp and 546 lb-ft. The combined headline figure of 819bhp is undeniably impressive, though Ferrari judiciously refrains from quoting a peak combined torque figure. This discretion likely stems from the intricate interplay between the V6 and the electric motor, but it’s safe to infer that the total torque output is nothing short of colossal. Crucially, this V6 unit sheds 30kg compared to a typical Ferrari V8, and it’s seamlessly mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The battery pack, a sleek, elongated structure, is ingeniously housed behind the seats. No Ferrari would be complete without an arsenal of sophisticated electronic chassis control systems. For the 296 GTB, Ferrari has developed an innovative six-axis sensor, dubbed 6w-CDS (6-way Chassis Dynamic Sensor). This cutting-edge technology precisely measures acceleration and rotational speed across the X, Y, and Z planes. By replacing conventional yaw sensors and working in concert with a sensor on the steering rack, the system gains an unprecedented understanding of driver input and real-time grip levels at the tire contact patches. This intelligence is then fed to other systems, such as the acclaimed Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, to optimize cornering speeds while maintaining unwavering stability and security. A noteworthy innovation is the ABS-evo system, available in RACE mode and above, which leverages the car’s brake-by-wire technology to not only shorten braking distances but also enhance braking performance during trail-braking into corners, a technique demanding exceptional control. For the first time in its history, Ferrari has deployed its active aerodynamics not merely to reduce drag, but to generate significant downforce. The manufacturer quotes a substantial figure of 360kg at 155mph, with a remarkable 100kg of that generated by the deployable rear wing. This intricate aero package is complemented by a carefully orchestrated airflow management system. Two radiators in the nose manage engine and gearbox temperatures, while two additional condensers are dedicated to cooling the battery. Hot air is strategically expelled underneath the car, preventing interference with the airflow directed to the intercoolers along the flanks. The discreet apertures beneath the headlamps are tasked with cooling the brakes, while the integrated wing at the rear of the roofline creates a “virtual” rear screen, guiding air to the back of the vehicle with remarkable efficiency. A significant portion of the 296’s downforce is generated from beneath the car, where meticulous attention has been paid not only to the channeling of air and the design of the rear diffuser but also to the optimal ride height, thereby maximizing the effectiveness of these downforce-generating surfaces. The pre-production 296 GTBs we experienced on track during the launch were all equipped with the optional Assetto Fiorano package. This performance-oriented upgrade replaces the standard dampers with Multimatic units derived from GT racing technology. It also incorporates additional carbon fiber aerodynamic elements on the front end, boosting front downforce by an additional 20kg. Further carbon fiber applications in the cabin, such as the door panels, and on the exterior contribute to a total weight saving of 12kg. This can be extended to 15kg with the optional Lexan rear engine cover. For the ultimate grip, the Assetto Fiorano package also offers Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, a significant step up from the standard Pilot Sport 4S. Owners can even opt for an exterior graphics package for their Fiorano-spec car, inspired by the iconic livery of the 1960s 250LM. Having spent considerable time interacting with the 296 GTB, both in images and in person, its aesthetic is undeniably captivating. It possesses a distinct character, a visual language quite unlike anything else on the road, and even without the optional graphics, it subtly evokes the spirit of the legendary 250LM. Performance and Driving Dynamics: A Symphony of Power and Precision Engaging the 296 GTB is a deliberate, almost ritualistic, process. A double press on the lower section of the steering wheel’s boss, followed by selecting first gear, awakens the hybrid powertrain. The car defaults to Hybrid mode, which typically sees it set off on electric power alone, unless the driver dictates otherwise through the intuitive haptic controls on the steering wheel. With judicious throttle application, the 296 can glide silently on electric power, provided the battery retains sufficient charge. Drivers can also deliberately engage “eDrive” mode, prioritizing pure electric propulsion irrespective of throttle demands. Beyond this, the Performance and Qualifying modes unlock the full potential of the combined powertrain. In Performance mode, both the V6 and electric motor work in concert, with the system also focused on maintaining a healthy battery charge. Qualifying mode, as the name suggests, unleashes the absolute maximum performance, with no regard for the battery’s state of charge. The experience of silently traversing urban landscapes is a surprisingly serene pleasure, a testament to the sophistication of the damping system, which contributes to a remarkably comfortable ride for long journeys. Even the luggage space in the front “frunk” is more accommodating than in some of Ferrari’s larger hybrid offerings, like the SF90. But, as we all inherently know, the true measure of this machine lies in what transpires when both the V6 and electric motor are unleashed in earnest. The responsiveness is simply breathtaking. Prod the throttle at low revs in a high gear, and the 296 GTB surges forward with an immediacy that blurs the distinction between cause and effect, making one question the very necessity of gears given its sheer potency. Yet, there are eight gears to exploit, and a V6 engine that eagerly revs to 8500rpm. When the 296 is truly unleashed, the effect is nothing short of astonishing. The acceleration figures – a sub-3-second 0-62mph sprint and a top speed exceeding 200mph – translate into a driving experience that is exhilarating, verging on overwhelming, characterized by a nervous laughter that is as addictive as it is intensely thrilling. This is a car of profound speed. And it sounds magnificent, too, with a rich V6 rasp enhanced by a compelling symphony of turbocharger effects.
Ride and Handling: The Art of Agile Engagement What truly elevates the 296 GTB is the extraordinary responsiveness of its chassis. Ferrari’s commitment to making this car “fun to drive” is evident in every interaction. It feels acutely agile without ever tipping into nervousness. The steering, typically light and rapid for a Ferrari, is also remarkably communicative, offering genuine feedback from the road surface. While grip levels are predictably immense, the car retains a remarkable degree of adjustability on the throttle, a characteristic that is guaranteed to elicit a broad grin. Despite its (dry) weight of 1470kg, the 296 GTB feels significantly lighter. There’s a delightful lack of inertia throughout the chassis, encouraging the driver to work with the car, employing subtle inputs and reveling in its precision. The “CT Off” (Chassis Traction Off) mode provides a safety net of electronic intervention, reassuring the driver with the knowledge that an exceptionally intelligent system is monitoring proceedings. However, even with all electronic aids deactivated, the 296’s inherent balance allows it to be coaxed into controlled oversteer in a manner that might seem unimaginable for a car producing 819bhp. On the racetrack, the 296 GTB possesses the remarkable ability to make even lengthy start-finish straights feel significantly shorter. Its surgical precision becomes even more apparent. While the power is ample to break rear traction at numerous points around the lap, the 296 is also acutely sensitive to braking and steering inputs. It swiftly teaches the driver that precision in control yields the greatest rewards. The turn-in accuracy and immediate response dramatically shorten the entry phase of every corner. Instead of easing the car into turns and allowing loads to build gradually, the 296 adopts its line instantaneously, aided by the adaptive Multimatic dampers. This is beautifully complemented by the hyper-quick steering and the enhanced roll support offered by the Assetto Fiorano setup. Even for a driver accustomed to more conventional sports cars, the sheer speed, precision, and agility of the 296 GTB are phenomenal and deliver an intoxicating experience lap after lap. Interior: A Digital Frontier with Familiar Touches The cabin architecture will feel instantly familiar to anyone who has experienced the SF90 Stradale, as the 296 GTB draws heavily from its larger sibling. The fully digital interface, complemented by haptic switchgear spread across the steering wheel and traditional Ferrari pods flanking it, presents a learning curve. While undeniably complex, it aims to convey a vast amount of information. The most significant hurdle, however, lies in the sometimes-unpredictable registration of inputs; simple operations can occasionally require a second press, and it’s not always immediately clear if an input has been successfully registered. Nevertheless, the cabin unequivocally conveys a sense of occasion and exclusivity, making it a truly special place to be. The Expert Verdict: Redefining the Supercar Equation When a vehicle is as technologically advanced as the 296 GTB, there’s always a risk that it could feel less than the sum of its parts. This was a sentiment echoed in our assessment of the SF90, which, while dazzling in its power, could be unnerving due to its less predictable driving characteristics. The 296 GTB, however, represents a distinct departure. As highlighted during the 2022 evo Car of the Year awards, where it secured a joint third place alongside the McLaren Artura, it exhibits a far more organic character. Its masterful blend of raw power and engaging dynamics strikes a sublime balance, effectively redefining expectations for a supercar in the roughly $250,000 price bracket. A forthcoming Versione Speciale variant, anticipated this year, promises even greater power, performance, and intensity, but the hope remains that the standard 296’s wonderfully natural feel will be preserved. It is this crucial aspect – the inherent feel and connection to the driver – that we earnestly hope Lamborghini has prioritized when perfecting its hybrid Temerario supercar. Over 900bhp is an almost obscene amount of power for a series-production supercar, and it has the potential to overwhelm the chassis and driver if not meticulously managed. If Lamborghini has achieved the same level of dynamic brilliance seen in the Revuelto, then we are poised for an epic twin test between two titans producing a combined 1700bhp, potentially escalating to a mind-boggling 2400bhp with the inclusion of the McLaren 750S. This makes the 750S, with its mere 740bhp, appear almost diminutive in this company. However, its relative lightness – a kerb weight of just 1389kg – ensures a highly competitive power-to-weight ratio. The McLaren’s inherent rawness, ergonomic perfection, razor-sharp steering, and deft chassis control offer a contrasting, more analogue experience compared to the, at times, more remote feel of the Ferrari. The 2025 Ferrari 296 GTB is not just a car; it’s a bold statement about the future of high-performance automotive engineering. It proves that hybridization can not only coexist with exhilarating driving dynamics but can actively enhance them. The integration of electric power isn’t merely a supplement; it’s a foundational element that unlocks unprecedented levels of performance, responsiveness, and efficiency.
For those seeking the pinnacle of hybrid supercar innovation and an unparalleled driving experience, the 2025 Ferrari 296 GTB stands as a compelling testament to Italian automotive excellence. We invite you to explore financing options or schedule a private consultation to understand how this extraordinary machine can become a part of your automotive journey.
