The Ferrari 296 GTB: A New Era of Hybrid Supercar Prowess Takes Center Stage For a decade now, the automotive world has been on a relentless quest for automotive perfection, pushing the boundaries of
performance, technology, and driver engagement. As an industry veteran with ten years immersed in this dynamic landscape, I’ve witnessed firsthand the seismic shifts that have reshaped the supercar segment. Among the most significant is the embrace of hybrid powertrains, a technological evolution that promises not just increased power but also greater efficiency and a more refined driving experience. At the forefront of this revolution stands the Ferrari 296 GTB, a car that, even years after its debut, continues to redefine what’s possible in a mid-engined supercar. The arrival of the Ferrari 296 GTB in 2022 marked an unprecedented departure for the Maranello marque. Eschewing the acclaimed twin-turbo V8 that had powered its predecessors, Ferrari boldly introduced a groundbreaking twin-turbocharged V6 engine, augmented by an electric motor. This innovative powertrain configuration positioned the 296 GTB as a pioneering force in a segment that was, and still is, gradually transitioning towards electrification. When it first launched, the 296 GTB’s most direct contemporary was the Lamborghini Huracán, a car that championed the soul-stirring symphony of a naturally aspirated V10. While the Huracán might have offered less outright power, it compensated with an inimitable charisma, raw V10 acoustics, and a visceral connection that resonated deeply with enthusiasts during its halcyon years. Simultaneously, the 296 GTB also contended with the formidable McLaren 720S, a masterclass in twin-turbo V8 engineering that prioritized power-to-weight supremacy. While the subsequent McLaren 750S represents an evolutionary refinement of that theme, the much-anticipated Lamborghini Temerario, boasting a staggering 903bhp and capable of reaching 10,000rpm with its hybridised twin-turbo V8, stands as Lamborghini’s direct riposte to Maranello’s 819bhp electrified Berlinetta. Make no mistake, the Ferrari 296 GTB is a powerhouse. Its all-new 120-degree twin-turbo V6, paired with an electric motor driving exclusively the rear wheels (a departure from the all-wheel-drive system in the SF90), propels the 819bhp machine into territory previously unimagined for supercars. It has, in essence, shattered established conventions. It’s easy to become fixated on such an astonishing power output and to ponder the ultimate limits of this performance escalation – and indeed, where such prodigious force can be practically unleashed. But for now, let’s focus on the marvel that is the 296 GTB itself. This is not just any Ferrari; it’s the first V6-powered Ferrari road car, a significant historical footnote given the iconic status of the 246 GT Dino, which never bore the Prancing Horse emblem during its production. Furthermore, it introduces a ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger arrangement and embraces plug-in hybrid technology, offering an all-electric range of approximately 15 miles. The compact V6 engine is mounted low within a new aluminum chassis, featuring a wheelbase shortened by 50mm compared to its V8 predecessors, subtly repositioning the occupants slightly further forward for a more intimate driving sensation. The electric motor alone contributes an impressive 165bhp and 232lb ft of torque. The V6, in isolation, produces a breathtaking 654bhp and 546lb ft. Combined, these powerhouses deliver the headline figure of 819bhp. Ferrari, perhaps intentionally, refrains from quoting a combined peak torque figure, likely due to the complex interplay between the V6 and the electric motor. However, it’s safe to surmise that the resultant torque is nothing short of colossal. Intriguingly, the V6 unit itself is approximately 30kg lighter than its V8 counterpart, and it’s mated to a lightning-fast eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The battery pack, a sleek, elongated structure, is ingeniously housed behind the seats. No Ferrari would be complete without a sophisticated suite of electronic chassis management systems, and the 296 GTB is no exception. Ferrari has developed an advanced six-axis sensor, dubbed 6w-CDS, capable of measuring acceleration and rotational speeds across the X, Y, and Z axes. This innovative system replaces traditional yaw sensors and, in conjunction with a sensor on the steering rack, provides the car with an unparalleled understanding of both driver inputs and the precise grip levels at the tire contact patches. This data is then used to optimize systems like Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, maximizing cornering speeds while maintaining unwavering stability and security. It also enables the novel ABS-evo system, which, in RACE mode and above, leverages the 296’s brake-by-wire technology to not only shorten braking distances but also enhance braking performance during trail-braking maneuvers into corners. For the first time in its history, Ferrari is deploying its active aerodynamics technology not to reduce drag, but to actively generate downforce. The company quotes a remarkable figure of 360kg of downforce at 155mph, with an astonishing 100kg of this attributed to the deployable rear wing.
The thermal management of the 296 GTB is a testament to meticulous engineering. Two radiators in the front fascia handle engine and gearbox cooling, supplemented by two additional condensers responsible for chilling the battery. Hot air is expelled from the underbody to avoid disrupting the flow of cool air directed towards the intercoolers along the car’s flanks. The discreet apertures located beneath the headlights are dedicated to cooling the brakes, while the integrated wing at the rear of the roofline plays a crucial role in creating a ‘virtual’ rear screen, effectively channeling air towards the rear of the car as if guided by an invisible surface. The majority of the 296’s substantial downforce is generated from beneath the car, where significant attention has been paid not only to the meticulous shaping of the underbody and the rear diffuser but also to optimizing the ground clearance to enhance the efficacy of these downforce-generating elements. The brief circuit excursions I experienced with the 296 GTB at its launch were exclusively with the optional Assetto Fiorano package. This upgrade replaces the standard dampers with race-derived Multimatic units, akin to those found in GT racing, and introduces further carbon fiber aerodynamic enhancements to the front fascia, contributing an additional 20kg of front-end downforce. The Assetto Fiorano package also incorporates more carbon fiber within the cabin, including the door panels, and on the exterior, contributing to an overall weight saving of 12kg. This can be further enhanced by a further 3kg if the optional Lexan rear engine cover is specified. For those opting for the Fiorano package, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires are available as an upgrade over the standard Pilot Sport 4S tires. Additionally, Fiorano-equipped cars can be personalized with an exterior graphics package inspired by the iconic 250LM from the 1960s. Having spent considerable time with the 296 GTB in person, I can attest to its striking aesthetic appeal. It’s a truly beautiful machine, distinct from anything else on the road, with a design that subtly evokes the spirit of the 1960s 250LM, even without the more polarizing graphics options. Performance and Acceleration Dynamics: A Symphony of Power Initiating forward motion in the 296 GTB is elegantly simple: a double-press of the lower section of the steering wheel boss, followed by selecting first gear. The car defaults to Hybrid mode, allowing for silent, electric-only propulsion unless deliberately overridden. As long as throttle inputs are judicious, the 296 will continue on electric power, provided the battery retains sufficient charge. Owners can also explicitly engage full EV mode, irrespective of the driving conditions. Beyond this, there are Performance and Qualifying modes. In these modes, both the V6 engine and the electric motor operate in tandem. Performance mode balances exhilarating propulsion with a focus on maintaining battery charge, while Qualifying mode prioritizes absolute maximum performance, disregarding the battery’s state of charge. The unexpected pleasure of gliding silently through urban landscapes, combined with the remarkably sophisticated damping that renders it a surprisingly comfortable mile-muncher, is noteworthy. Even the luggage space in the front ‘frunk’ is more practical than that found in the SF90. However, the true question on everyone’s mind, including mine, is: what does it feel like when both the engine and electric motor are unleashed to their full potential? The answer becomes immediately apparent when you plant the throttle at low revs in a higher gear. The 296 GTB surges forward with an immediacy that eradicates any hint of turbo lag, making you momentarily question the very need for gear changes, such is its astonishing potency. Yet, with eight gears to exploit and an engine that revs to a thrilling 8500rpm, unleashing the full fury of the 296 is an utterly breathtaking experience. As the specifications suggest – a 0-62mph time in the sub-three-second bracket and a top speed exceeding 200mph – the rate of acceleration verges on the exhilaratingly intense, bordering on the almost overwhelming, yet it’s paradoxically addictive. This is an unequivocally rapid machine. Its auditory accompaniment is equally captivating, with a delightful blend of turbocharger whistling and the melodious rasp of the V6 engine. Ride and Handling: Precision, Agility, and Unprecedented Driver Connection What truly sets the 296 GTB apart is the astonishing responsiveness of its chassis. Ferrari’s commitment to making this car ‘fun to drive’ is not mere marketing hyperbole; it’s an inherent characteristic. The car feels exceptionally agile without ever becoming nervous or unpredictable. The steering, a hallmark of Ferrari’s precision engineering, is typically light and swift, yet it conveys a remarkable level of communication and detail from the road surface. While grip levels are predictably immense, the car’s true magic lies in its throttle adjustability, which inspires a level of confidence that invariably brings a broad grin to the driver’s face. Despite its quoted dry weight of 1470kg, the 296 GTB feels significantly lighter. There’s a remarkable absence of inertia throughout the entire vehicle, which encourages the driver to work harmoniously with its capabilities, making minute inputs and reveling in its pinpoint accuracy and precision. The CT Off mode, while disengaging the traction control, still provides an invaluable safety net, reassuring the driver with the knowledge that an incredibly sophisticated electronic brain remains vigilant. However, even with all electronic aids deactivated, the intrinsic balance of the 296 GTB allows for controlled moments of oversteer that you would scarcely believe possible in a car producing 819bhp. On the track, the 296 GTB has the uncanny ability to make even the longest straights feel dramatically shorter. What becomes even more apparent is its surgical precision. The sheer volume of power is more than sufficient to break rear-end traction at numerous points around the circuit. Yet, the 296 GTB is also exquisitely sensitive to braking and steering inputs, quickly teaching the driver that meticulous control yields the greatest rewards. The turn-in accuracy and response are simply phenomenal, dramatically shortening the entry phase of every corner. Instead of easing the car into turns and allowing loads to build gradually, the 296 GTB settles instantly, aided by its Multimatic dampers. The hyper-quick steering complements the enhanced body control provided by the Assetto Fiorano setup beautifully. Even if you’ve just stepped out of a more conventional sports car, the speed, precision, and agility of the 296 GTB are nothing short of phenomenal and an absolute joy to experience lap after lap.
Interior Ambiance: A Digital Frontier with a Familiar Ferrari Soul The cabin architecture of the 296 GTB will feel immediately familiar to anyone who has had the pleasure of sitting in an SF90. The 296 heavily borrows from its more potent sibling, featuring a fully digital interface complemented by haptic switchgear. This system, integrated onto the steering wheel and traditional Ferrari pods flanking it, can initially present a learning curve. It is undeniably complex, but then again, there’s a substantial amount of information and functionality to manage. The primary critique, however, lies in instances where simple operations require a second press, or where there’s ambiguity about whether a press has registered successfully. Nevertheless, the overall ambiance of the cabin exudes a palpable sense of occasion and exclusivity. The Verdict: A Benchmark for the Hybrid Supercar Era In my experience over the past decade, there’s always a risk that a car heavily laden with cutting-edge technology might become less than the sum of its parts. This was a sentiment I felt with the SF90; while it dazzled with its power, its challenging driving characteristics left me somewhat unnerved. The 296 GTB, however, is a different proposition entirely. It strikes a masterful balance, embodying a more organic and engaging driving experience. Its potent blend of raw power and captivating dynamics hits a sweet spot, effectively redefining the expectations for a supercar in the £250,000 price bracket. Rumors of a Versione Speciale variant are circulating, promising even greater levels of power, performance, and intensity. The hope remains that the standard 296’s remarkably natural and intuitive feel will be preserved. It is this very aspect – the car’s inherent naturalness and approachable character – that I sincerely hope Lamborghini has prioritized in the development of its hybrid Temerario supercar. A figure exceeding 900bhp in a series-production supercar is an almost obscene amount of power, and it has the potential to overwhelm the rest of the vehicle if not meticulously integrated. If Lamborghini has indeed achieved this delicate balance, as their exceptional work on the Revuelto suggests they might, then we are poised for an absolutely sensational twin test, potentially showcasing over 1700bhp of hybrid hypercar might. Alternatively, we could even expand this to a 2400bhp triple threat, including the McLaren 750S. In this context, the McLaren, with its 740bhp, might appear to be the relative ‘minnow.’ However, it counters with a remarkably lithe kerb weight of 1389kg, delivering a highly competitive power-to-weight ratio. The McLaren’s inherent rawness, ergonomic perfection, crisp steering, and sublime chassis control offer a stark contrast to the comparatively remote nature of some Ferraris. Ferrari 296 GTB Technical Specifications Engine: 2992cc, twin-turbocharged V6, plus electric motor Transmission: Eight-speed, dual-clutch, active E-diff Combined Power Output: 819bhp @ 8000rpm Combined Torque Output: 546lb ft @ 6250rpm Weight: 1470kg (dry) (566bhp/ton) 0-62mph: 2.9 seconds Top Speed: 205mph Price: Starting from £250,000+ The Ferrari 296 GTB represents not just a car, but a bold statement about the future of automotive performance.
