While I typically prefer to navigate dangerous territory through internal dialogue rather than physical proximity to a driver during a shakedown, the handover of cars like this is a process of trust and mutual respect. It provides an invaluable opportunity to observe the car’s behavior and performance before taking the wheel.
We head for the Futa Pass, a favorite route in the region, just 90 minutes from Pagani’s headquarters. Famous for being part of the historic Mille Miglia route, it is the perfect environment to enjoy the Pagani Utopia without drawing excessive attention. With Aston Parrott and Pagani PR representative Sebastian Berridi safely tucked behind us in the camera car, Scilla and I merge onto the A1 autostrada, leaving Modena behind. A sense of giddiness washes over me, as though this is my first time encountering such an extreme machine.
Even from the passenger seat, the Utopia is a phenomenal experience. It is more supple and refined than I had anticipated. Every so often, Scilla drops down a few gears—purely for enjoyment, I suspect—and applies a moderate amount of throttle. The V12 hisses and roars as the boost pressure builds, and a lion-like growl emanates from deep within the 6.0-liter block. It is a sweeter, sharper delivery than the original Huayra’s, with a richer and more outgoing personality, but bolstered by a sharper, steelier edge. What an engine!
We stop for fuel, and for me to transition into the driver’s seat. One thing you learn very quickly about the Pagani Utopia is that whenever you stop, people emerge from nowhere, much like they do in zombie movies, only friendlier. It might sound intrusive, but there is something reassuring about the enduring fascination with a wide, low, and stunningly beautiful car. While bystanders brandish their phones to capture images, I step back to survey the scene. Despite having spent the last hour in the Utopia, I, too, find myself captivated by its beauty.
Devoid of aggressive wings and cavernous venturi tunnels, the Utopia eschews the current obsession with obvious downforce in pursuit of a more artistic endeavor. It celebrates purity of form while indulging in lavish embellishment and eye-catching flourishes. It is a unique fusion and the very essence of Pagani’s distinctive aesthetic.

You would think that possessing the coveted key—a satisfyingly weighty, Utopia-shaped puck—would grant you the ability to maintain a cool demeanor, but still, my eyes roam along its compound curves like a 3D scanner. Every single piece of exterior and interior brightwork is machined from billet, which not only lends it a jewelry-like quality but creates the impression that the entire car has somehow been hewn from a single block of metal. It is a remarkable sight to behold in the wild.
