Discarding the acclaimed twin-turbo V8 in favor of a compact 120-degree twin-turbo V6, paired with cutting-edge electric augmentation, this marvel of engineering propels Ferrari into a competitive segment where hybridization is just beginning to take hold.
When the 296 GTB first graced the automotive landscape, it was positioned against the incumbent Huracán, a naturally aspirated V10-powered icon. While the Huracán excelled in visceral auditory presence and raw mechanical engagement, it now faces a fierce challenger in the all-new Temerario from Lamborghini, boasting a staggering 903hp from a 10,000rpm twin-turbo V8 hybrid setup. Simultaneously, McLaren counters with its 750S, a refined evolution of its celebrated platform, trading on sheer power-to-weight ratio. The 296 GTB, however, stands resolute as Maranello’s 819hp hybrid Berlinetta, a technological tour de force that has redefined the boundaries of performance and sustainability in the hypercar arena. The 296 GTB commands attention with its sheer power output, a staggering 819hp delivered by a revolutionary V6 engine and electric motor combination, driving only the rear wheels. This strategic choice, unlike the all-wheel-drive SF90, imbues the 296 GTB with an exhilaratingly responsive and dynamic character. While the notion of such performance on public roads might seem excessive, the pursuit of ultimate performance is a hallmark of the supercar genre, and the 296 GTB is arguably the most effective execution of this philosophy to date. As the first V6-powered road car to carry the prestigious Prancing Horse emblem, the 296 GTB is also a plug-in hybrid with an all-electric range of approximately 15 miles. It features a ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger configuration and a new aluminum chassis. The compact V6 is positioned low in the chassis, and the wheelbase has been shortened by 50mm compared to the V8 models, shifting occupants slightly forward to enhance agility. The electric motor delivers a potent 165hp and 232lb ft of torque, while the V6 alone produces an astonishing 654hp and 546lb ft. The combined 819hp headline figure is impressive, but Ferrari strategically omits the combined peak torque, likely due to the intricate synergy between the engine and electric motor. Nevertheless, it is safe to assume that the 296 GTB offers extraordinary pulling power. The V6 unit weighs approximately 30kg less than its V8 counterpart and is paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The long, oblong battery pack is strategically placed behind the cabin. A hallmark of any Ferrari is its suite of sophisticated electronic chassis management systems. For the 296 GTB, Ferrari has developed the 6w-CDS (six-axis sensor), which measures acceleration and rotational velocity across the X, Y, and Z planes. Replacing the conventional yaw sensor, and integrated with a steering rack sensor, this system allows the car to interpret driver inputs and grip levels, seamlessly coordinating with the Side Slip Control (SSC) and active E-Diff to maximize cornering speeds without compromising stability. Furthermore, Ferrari has introduced ABS-evo, leveraging brake-by-wire technology to shorten braking distances and enhance stopping performance during trail braking in corners, a feature available in RACE mode and above. For the first time in a Ferrari road car, active aerodynamics are utilized to increase downforce rather than reduce drag. The 296 GTB produces a claimed 360kg of downforce at 155mph, with the rear wing generating up to 100kg of this force when deployed. Cooling is achieved through two radiators in the nose for engine and gearbox heat extraction, alongside two condensers for the battery. Hot air is expelled from the underbody, preventing interference with the airflow into the intercoolers along the flanks. The small apertures below the headlights serve to cool the brakes, while the rear-integrated wing creates a ‘virtual’ rear screen, effectively channeling air to the rear of the car. A significant portion of the 296 GTB’s downforce is generated aerodynamically underneath the vehicle, where meticulous attention has been paid to airflow management, the rear diffuser, and the underbody height to optimize downforce-generating surfaces. The launch-phase models, which we were given a brief preview of on the circuit, were all equipped with the Assetto Fiorano pack. This package replaces the standard dampers with Multimatic units derived from GT racing and adds carbon aerodynamic enhancements to the front, increasing downforce by 20kg. The interior features additional carbon fiber trim, such as door panels, and exterior components, contributing to a 12kg overall weight saving, which increases to 15kg with the optional Lexan rear engine cover. Fiorano variants can also be fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, replacing the standard Pilot Sport 4S. A graphics package inspired by the 250LM of the 1960s is also available. Having experienced the 296 GTB firsthand, we find it to be an exceptionally beautiful machine, utterly distinct from anything else on the market. Even without the polarizing graphics, it evokes the spirit of the 250LM from the 1960s. Performance and 0-62mph Time To engage the 296 GTB, simply press the lower portion of the steering wheel boss twice and engage first gear. The car defaults to Hybrid mode, starting on electric power alone unless commanded otherwise via the haptic mode buttons on the steering wheel. Provided the battery has sufficient charge, the 296 GTB will continue to operate in electric-only mode with gentle throttle application.
Drivers can also select EV mode independently of the current powertrain demands or opt for Performance and Qualifying modes. In these modes, both power sources work in tandem: Performance mode prioritizes sustained power delivery while replenishing the battery, whereas Qualifying mode focuses on ultimate performance irrespective of the battery’s state of charge. Cruising silently through villages is an unexpectedly delightful experience. The damping is so sophisticated that it provides a remarkably comfortable ride, even covering long distances. The luggage compartment in the front ‘frunk’ is surprisingly capacious, a significant improvement over the SF90. However, what enthusiasts truly crave is the visceral experience of unleashing both engine and electric motor at their peak. The 296 GTB’s instant acceleration is palpable. Planting the throttle at low revs in a high gear results in a surge of power that makes the driver momentarily question the necessity of gears. However, with eight gears at their disposal and a V6 capable of revving to 8500rpm, the 296 GTB is capable of breathtaking acceleration. The 296 GTB achieves 0-62mph in just 2.9 seconds, with a top speed exceeding 205mph. The acceleration rate is intensely exhilarating, bordering on unnerving yet strangely addictive. This is a genuinely rapid supercar, complemented by an engaging soundtrack that fuses turbocharged character with the tuneful rasp of the V6. Ride and Handling What truly distinguishes the 296 GTB is its exceptionally responsive chassis. Ferrari’s commitment to making the car ‘fun to drive’ is evident in every aspect of its handling. The car feels highly agile without bordering on nervousness. The steering is typically light and fast, yet it offers precise feedback. Despite the incredibly high grip levels expected in a hypercar, the 296 GTB remains highly adjustable by throttle input, eliciting a grin from even seasoned drivers. The car feels significantly lighter than its 1470kg (dry) weight suggests. The lack of inertia encourages interaction with the vehicle, allowing for small inputs and rewarding accuracy and precision. The CT Off mode permits audacious driving maneuvers, supported by the reassuring presence of a far more intelligent electronic brain than any driver possesses. Even with all electronic aids deactivated, the 296 GTB’s inherent balance allows for precise oversteer control at power levels where one would expect complete instability. On the track, the 296 GTB shrinks even the longest straights. Its sharpness as a precision instrument is undeniable. The abundance of power allows for rear-end breakaway at numerous points throughout the lap, yet the 296 GTB is highly sensitive to braking and steering inputs. Drivers quickly learn that precise control yields the greatest rewards. The 296 GTB’s incredible turn-in accuracy and response dramatically shorten the entry phase of every corner. Instead of easing the car into turns and allowing loads to build, the 296 GTB takes its line immediately, thanks to its Multimatic dampers. The lightning-fast steering aligns perfectly with the additional roll support of the Assetto Fiorano setup. Even for drivers transitioning from a standard sports car, the speed, precision, and agility of the 296 GTB are phenomenal and immensely rewarding, lap after lap. Interior
