H1805007_Rescue family cat #rescue The V6 Revolution: Evaluating the Ferrari 296 GTB vs. The Emerging Hybrid Competition Engineering the New Breed of Supercars: A Decade of Supercar Evolution The automotive industry is currently undergoing one of its most significant transformations in decades, driven by the dual pressures of stringent emissions regulations and rapid technological advancement. At the heart of this seismic shift lies the burgeoning segment of hybrid supercars, vehicles that seek to reconcile the visceral thrill of internal combustion with the instant torque and efficiency of electric power. Within this evolving landscape, the Ferrari 296 GTB stands as a pivotal benchmark—a machine that rewrote the rules for mid-engined performance when it arrived, even as the next generation of hybridized hypercars loom on the horizon.
For years, the Ferrari 296 GTB has commanded respect in the elite echelon of Italian performance. This isn’t merely another supercar; it represents a fundamental departure from Maranello’s established philosophy. Dispensing with the highly acclaimed twin-turbocharged V8—the backbone of modern Ferrari’s road cars—the engineers in Maranello have introduced a sophisticated V6 hybrid powertrain. This daring pivot aligns Ferrari with its direct competitors, most notably Lamborghini, by embracing hybridization, but it does so with a unique character that has captivated journalists and drivers alike. The arrival of the 296 GTB in 2022 marked an unprecedented shift in the Ferrari lineup. It successfully transitioned from naturally aspirated V10 and large-displacement V8 power to a downsized V6, enhanced by electric augmentation. This move positioned Ferrari at the forefront of a higher-tier supercar segment that was only just beginning to explore the potential of hybrid power. While the V8 may be gone, the spirit of innovation—always a hallmark of Ferrari hybrid supercar development—remains fiercely alive. The Traditional Adversaries: V10 Charisma and Twin-Turbo V8 Might In its halcyon days, the 296 GTB faced off against worthy adversaries. The Lamborghini Huracán, with its naturally aspirated V10, offered a contrast in both sound and delivery. Though lower in outright power, the Huracán compensated with raw, evocative noise and a charismatic engine that was a delight for traditionalists. More directly, the 296 also challenged the McLaren 720S, which retained a formidable twin-turbo V8. The subsequent McLaren 750S, a refinement of its predecessor, emphasized power-to-weight supremacy. However, the landscape has shifted dramatically. The emergence of the Lamborghini Temerario has fundamentally redefined the competitive benchmark. Packing a staggering 903 bhp and revving to a stratospheric 10,000 rpm, this twin-turbo V8 hybrid is essentially Lamborghini’s direct gauntlet thrown down at Maranello’s 819 bhp hybrid Berlinetta. The pressure on the Ferrari 296 GTB to maintain its supremacy has never been higher, as rivals push the boundaries of power and technology. Decoding the 296 GTB: A Masterclass in Power and Precision It is impossible to ignore the raw numbers generated by the 296 GTB. With an all-new, 120-degree twin-turbo V6 engine paired with an electric motor, the car delivers a breathtaking combined output of 819 bhp. Unlike the electric-heavy SF90, the 296 routes this immense power exclusively to the rear wheels, offering a more traditional supercar driving experience. This architecture blew apart the conventions of the 296 GTB 2025 review, as the driving experience is fundamentally pure and focused. It’s easy to get lost in the sheer scale of these figures and wonder where this power escalation will end—and, perhaps more importantly, where drivers can actually utilize such performance. But for the enthusiasts drawn to the Ferrari 296 GTB price, the question isn’t about necessity; it’s about desire. The 296 GTB is the first V6-powered production Ferrari road car, a significant distinction that sets it apart. While the delectable 246 GT Dino never wore the Prancing Horse emblem in its era, the 296 carries the badge proudly. It also features a “hot-vee” turbocharger installation—a design that places the exhaust manifolds and turbochargers within the engine’s vee—and is a plug-in hybrid with an EV-only range of around 15 miles. The V6 engine is mounted low down in a bespoke aluminum chassis, reducing the car’s center of gravity. The wheelbase has been shortened by 50 mm compared to its V8-engined predecessors, and the occupants are positioned slightly further forward, optimizing weight distribution and handling dynamics. The Powertrain: Electric Ingenuity Meets V10 Power The electric motor is a potent addition, contributing 165 bhp and 232 lb-ft of torque. The V6 engine alone produces a staggering 654 bhp and 546 lb-ft. While Ferrari wisely refrains from publishing a combined peak torque figure—presumably due to the complexities of how the engine and motor interact—it is safe to assume the combined output is considerable. In total, the V6 architecture saves approximately 30 kg over a comparable Ferrari V8. The engine is coupled to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the battery pack, a long oblong structure, is cleverly packaged behind the seats.
However, it wouldn’t be a Ferrari without an arsenal of acronym-laden electronic chassis systems. The 296 features a revolutionary six-axis sensor known as 6w-CDS. This advanced unit measures both acceleration and rotational speed across the X, Y, and Z axes. By replacing the conventional yaw sensor and working in tandem with the steering rack sensor, the Ferrari 296 GTB gains a sophisticated understanding of driver intent and grip levels. This allows the Ferrari hybrid supercar to optimize systems like Side Slip Control (SSC) and the active E-Diff to maximize cornering speed while maintaining absolute stability. The system also enables the new ABS-evo system (a brilliantly named update) in RACE mode and above. Using the 296 GTB’s brake-by-wire system, the car can shorten braking distances and improve stability during trail-braking maneuvers. Aerodynamics and Chassis: Harnessing Downforce For the first time, Ferrari utilizes active aerodynamics not to reduce drag, but to generate downforce. The firm quotes a figure of 360 kg at 155 mph, with up to 100 kg of that generated by the deployable rear wing. This functional elegance underscores the focus on real-world performance, a critical aspect of the 296 GTB 2025 review where practicality often meets hypercar capability. The cooling architecture is a study in thermal management. Two radiators in the nose cool the engine and gearbox, while two additional condensers cool the battery. Hot air is expelled beneath the car to avoid interfering with the intercoolers along the flanks. The small apertures below the headlights draw air to cool the brakes, while the integrated wing at the rear of the roofline creates a ‘virtual’ rear screen, channeling airflow to the rear of the car as if guided by a physical surface. The majority of the 296’s downforce is generated underneath, with meticulous attention paid to airflow channelling and the rear diffuser. Crucially, the height of the underbody has been optimized to maximize the effectiveness of these downforce-generating surfaces, ensuring the car remains planted at extreme speeds. Assetto Fiorano: The Track-Focused Experience The 296 GTB models driven during the launch were equipped with the optional Assetto Fiorano pack. This extensive upgrade replaces the standard dampers with Multimatic items derived from GT racing and adds further carbon aerodynamic devices to the nose, increasing front downforce by 20 kg. The cabin receives additional carbon fiber treatment, such as the door panels, contributing to an overall weight saving of 12 kg, which increases to 15 kg with the optional Lexan rear engine cover. For those selecting the Fiorano package, the standard Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires can be upgraded to Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R variants. Fiorano cars can also be ordered with an exterior graphics package inspired by the iconic 250LM from the 1960s, adding a touch of motorsport heritage to the Ferrari 296 GTB price justification. Having spent considerable time with the 296 GTB, it’s clear the design is a departure from Ferrari’s recent aesthetic. It’s exceptionally pretty, striking a unique chord in the segment. Even without the divisive graphics pack, it echoes the aesthetic of the 250LM, creating a timeless yet modern profile that appeals to those seeking a Ferrari V6 hybrid supercar with distinctive style. Performance and Driving Experience: Pushing the Limits To initiate movement, the driver simply gives the bottom of the steering wheel boss a double press and engages first gear. The 296 GTB always starts in Hybrid mode, allowing it to move off on electric power alone unless directed otherwise via the haptic driver mode ‘buttons’ on the left side of the steering wheel. As long as excessive throttle isn’t applied, the car will continue on battery power, provided the charge level is sufficient.
Drivers can elect to ‘force’ the car into EV mode, bypassing the engine entirely, or select Performance and Qualifying modes. In these modes, both power sources work in tandem. Performance mode prioritizes acceleration while also replenishing the
