Despite the looming shadow of its soon-to-arrive Lamborghini rival, the Temerario, this Italian icon continues to captivate and astound. In 2022, Ferrari executed a significant pivot in its engineering philosophy. The beloved multi-award-winning twin-turbo V8 engine was retired, replaced by a revolutionary twin-turbo V6 engine. This groundbreaking powertrain, coupled with advanced electrical augmentation, positioned the Ferrari 296 GTB at the forefront of the supercar segment, a class that is just now beginning its broad transition towards hybrid technology. [H2] A Rivalry Defined by Power and Sound
When the 296 GTB debuted, its primary adversary was the Lamborghini Huracán, which boasted a naturally-aspirated V10 engine. While the Huracán offered comparable power in its early years, it lacked the raw auditory character and V10 charisma that fans cherished. The McLaren 720S, with its potent twin-turbo V8, also remained a formidable competitor. However, the introduction of the McLaren 750S marks a more evolutionary step for the Woking-based manufacturer, focusing on power-to-weight supremacy. In stark contrast, the upcoming Lamborghini Temerario is a bold counter-offensive. With a staggering 903bhp, 10,000rpm twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain, this new machine is Maranello’s direct challenge to the 819bhp hybrid Berlinetta that is the Ferrari 296 GTB. [H2] The Power of the New V6 The numbers generated by the Ferrari 296 GTB are undeniably impressive. The V6-hybrid configuration is a game-changer. Using a brand-new 120-degree twin-turbo V6 engine and an electric motor, the 296 GTB powers only its rear wheels—a departure from the all-wheel-drive system of the SF90 Stradale. This strategic choice enabled Ferrari to achieve a stunning 819bhp, completely redefining the supercar segment. It is natural to ponder the limits of this power escalation—a thought that immediately brings the Lamborghini Temerario to mind. But questioning where this performance can be utilized is a debate for another day. For now, let’s explore the groundbreaking aspects of the 296 GTB. [H2] A Hybrid Pioneer The 296 GTB holds several significant distinctions. It is the first Ferrari V6 road car, excluding the 246 GT Dino, which never bore the Prancing Horse emblem during its production run. It also features a ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger layout and operates as a plug-in hybrid, offering an electric-only range of approximately 15 miles. The engine is positioned low in a new aluminium chassis, with the wheelbase reduced by 50mm compared to its V8 predecessors. This allows the driver and passenger to sit slightly further forward. The electric motor produces 165bhp and 232lb ft of torque, while the V6 engine alone generates a remarkable 654bhp and 546lb ft. Ferrari refrains from quoting combined peak torque, likely due to the complex interplay between the engine and the electric motor. However, it’s safe to assume the resulting figure is considerable. Overall, the V6 unit saves 30kg over comparable V8s and is paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The battery pack, a long, rectangular structure, is located behind the seats. [H2] Advanced Chassis Control Systems Any Ferrari is defined by its sophisticated electronic chassis management systems. For the 296 GTB, Ferrari developed a six-axis sensor known as 6w-CDS. This unit measures acceleration and rotational speed along the X, Y, and Z planes. Replacing the traditional yaw sensor, the 6w-CDS, in conjunction with the steering rack sensor, allows the car to understand not only the driver’s inputs but also the grip levels at the tire contact patches. This sophisticated system works with Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff to maximize cornering speeds while maintaining stability and security. Furthermore, the system enables a novel technique known as ABS-evo, which utilizes the car’s brake-by-wire technology. In RACE mode and above, ABS-evo shortens braking distances and improves stability during trail-braking maneuvers. [H2] Aerodynamics: Force Over Drag For the first time, Ferrari has employed active aerodynamics to increase downforce rather than reduce drag. The manufacturer quotes a figure of 360kg at 155mph, with the rear wing, which deploys from the rear of the car, contributing up to 100kg of this force. The 296 GTB features two radiators in the nose to cool the engine and gearbox, along with two additional condensers for battery cooling. Hot air is expelled underneath the car to prevent interference with the intercooler airflow along the sides. The small vents below the headlights are dedicated to cooling the brakes, while the wing integrated into the rear roofline creates a ‘virtual’ rear screen, channeling air to the back of the car as if guided by a surface. The majority of the 296’s downforce is generated from the underbody. Ferrari engineers paid meticulous attention not only to air channeling and the rear diffuser but also to the height of the underbody off the ground, significantly increasing the effectiveness of the downforce-generating surfaces. [H2] The Assetto Fiorano Pack: Racing DNA
The initial track-focused Ferrari 296 GTB models were equipped with the Assetto Fiorano pack. This package replaces the standard dampers with Multimatic units derived from GT racing and adds further carbon-fiber aerodynamic enhancements to the nose, boosting front downforce by an additional 20kg. The cabin sees further carbon-fiber integration, particularly in the door panels and exterior components, resulting in an overall weight reduction of 12kg. This figure increases to 15kg if the optional Lexan rear engine cover is selected. Fiorano pack owners can also opt for Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, replacing the standard Pilot Sport 4S tires. A distinctive exterior graphics package, inspired by the 250LM of the 1960s, is also available for Fiorano variants. [H2] Aesthetics and Design Having spent considerable time with the Ferrari 296 GTB, it is evident that the car is a visually stunning masterpiece. It stands apart from any other model in the lineup and, even without the distinctive graphics package, evokes the elegant lines of the 250LM from the 1960s. Performance and Driving Experience [H3] Getting Started and Hybrid Capability To set the Ferrari 296 GTB in motion, simply press the bottom of the steering wheel boss twice and engage first gear. The car always starts in Hybrid mode, allowing it to pull away using electric power alone unless instructed otherwise. The driver can select modes via the haptic buttons on the left side of the steering wheel. By applying minimal throttle pressure, the car can continue on electric power, provided the battery is adequately charged. Users can also select EV mode, forcing the car to run solely on electric power regardless of throttle demand. Additionally, there are Performance and Qualifying modes where both power sources operate simultaneously. Performance mode focuses on delivering power while also charging the battery, whereas Qualifying mode prioritizes raw performance, disregarding the battery’s state of charge. [H3] The Surprising Utility of a Supercar Cruising quietly through villages offers an unexpected sense of tranquility. The damping is so sophisticated that the 296 GTB proves to be a surprisingly comfortable grand tourer, complete with a respectable luggage compartment in the frunk, unlike the SF90. However, the question that lingers is: what happens when the engine and electric motor are fully engaged? The answer lies in the car’s response to low-rev, high-gear acceleration. The 296 GTB surges forward with zero lag, making you momentarily question the need for gears, such is the sheer potency. Yet, there are eight gears to play with, and the engine revs to 8,500rpm. When you truly uncork the 296, the acceleration is absolutely staggering. [H3] Adrenaline-Inducing Pace As the specifications suggest—0-62mph in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 205mph—the rate of acceleration is intense, verging on uncomfortable, yet undeniably addictive. This is a seriously rapid supercar. It sounds magnificent, too, with rich turbo sounds layering the tuneful V6 rasp. Ride and Handling Dynamics [H3] Responsive and Engaging Chassis
What truly stands out is the responsiveness of the Ferrari 296 GTB’s chassis. Ferrari promised an engaging driving experience
