Today, we stand at a fascinating crossroads where electrification isn’t just a trend but a fundamental shift in how we perceive and experience automotive excellence. Ferrari, a brand synonymous with passion, performance, and unparalleled heritage, has boldly embraced this evolution with the 296 GTB. This isn’t merely a new model; it’s a paradigm shift, a testament to Maranello’s ability to blend groundbreaking technology with the soul-stirring essence that defines a true Ferrari. As rivals like the forthcoming Lamborghini Temerario loom, the 296 GTB solidifies its position as a benchmark, a car that doesn’t just compete but sets the standard for the hybrid supercar era. The arrival of the Ferrari 296 GTB in 2022 marked a significant departure from tradition. Forgoing the multi-award-winning twin-turbo V8 that has powered so many iconic Maranello machines, Ferrari instead introduced a potent new twin-turbocharged V6 engine, seamlessly integrated with an electric augment. This strategic pivot placed the 296 GTB firmly at the vanguard of a high-tier supercar segment that was, and to some extent still is, navigating the complex transition to hybrid powertrains. In its initial years, the 296 GTB faced formidable adversaries. The Lamborghini Huracán, with its naturally aspirated V10, offered a visceral, albeit less powerful, alternative, renowned for its charismatic soundtrack and raw auditory appeal. Competing fiercely was the McLaren 720S, a masterclass in twin-turbo V8 performance and power-to-weight supremacy. However, the landscape is rapidly evolving. The forthcoming Lamborghini Temerario, boasting an astonishing 10,000rpm redline and a staggering 903bhp from its hybrid V8 powertrain, represents a direct and potent challenge to Ferrari’s latest creation. The Temerario is clearly Lamborghini’s answer to Maranello’s 819bhp hybridised Berlinetta, pushing the boundaries of what’s achievable in the hybrid supercar domain. The sheer potency of the Ferrari 296 GTB is undeniable. Its all-new, 120-degree, twin-turbocharged V6 engine, coupled with an electric motor, drives exclusively the rear wheels—a deliberate choice distinguishing it from its SF90 sibling. This configuration yields a combined output of 819bhp, a figure that dramatically reshapes expectations within the supercar segment. It’s easy to become fixated on such headline-grabbing power figures and ponder the ultimate limits of such escalating performance. Questions about where one might responsibly deploy such prodigious capabilities are valid, but perhaps secondary to appreciating the engineering marvel that has been achieved. What truly sets the 296 GTB apart is its historical significance. It is the first V6-powered Ferrari road car to bear the legendary Prancing Horse emblem, harking back to the spirit of the delectable 246 GT Dino, though that car predated Ferrari’s official badging. Furthermore, it pioneers Ferrari’s ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger architecture, where the turbos are nestled within the cylinder banks, optimizing packaging and responsiveness. As a plug-in hybrid, it also offers an electric-only range of approximately 15 miles, providing a degree of silent, emission-free capability for urban traversal. The compact V6 is mounted low in a new aluminum chassis, with a wheelbase 50mm shorter than its V8 predecessors, and the occupants are positioned slightly further forward, contributing to a more engaging driving dynamic. The electric motor contributes a substantial 165bhp and 232lb ft of torque, while the V6 engine itself produces a remarkable 654bhp and 546lb ft. Ferrari, with characteristic discretion, refrains from quoting a combined peak torque figure, likely due to the intricate interplay between the electric motor and the combustion engine. However, it’s safe to assume the synergistic output is nothing short of colossal. Notably, the V6 powertrain, including its ancillaries, weighs approximately 30kg less than a comparable Ferrari V8. This is mated to an advanced eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and the battery pack, a sleek oblong structure, is ingeniously housed behind the seats, maintaining a low center of gravity. No Ferrari would be complete without an array of sophisticated electronic chassis management systems, and the 296 GTB is no exception. Ferrari has developed a groundbreaking six-axis sensor, dubbed 6w-CDS (Chassis Dynamic Sensor), capable of measuring acceleration and rotational velocity across the X, Y, and Z planes. This advanced sensor replaces traditional yaw sensors and, in conjunction with sensors on the steering rack, provides the vehicle’s control systems with an unprecedented understanding of driver input and real-time grip levels at the tire contact patch. This data is then fed to systems like Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, working in concert to maximize cornering speeds while maintaining rock-solid stability and driver confidence. It also enables a novel ABS-evo system, available in RACE mode and above. Leveraging the 296’s brake-by-wire technology, ABS-evo not only shortens braking distances but also significantly enhances braking performance during trail-braking maneuvers into corners, a testament to the sophistication of modern supercar dynamics.
For the first time in its history, Ferrari is employing its active aerodynamics not for drag reduction, but for the express purpose of increasing downforce. The company quotes a formidable 360kg of downforce at 155mph, with a substantial portion—up to 100kg—generated by a deployable rear wing seamlessly integrated into the car’s bodywork. The aerodynamic design is a marvel of functional beauty. Twin radiators in the front fascia manage engine and gearbox cooling, complemented by two condensers dedicated to battery thermal management. Hot air is strategically expelled underneath the car, ensuring it doesn’t compromise the airflow directed to the intercoolers flanking the body. Small apertures beneath the headlamps are dedicated to brake cooling, while a subtle wing integrated into the roofline aids in creating a ‘virtual’ rear screen, effectively channeling air towards the rear of the car as if guided by a sculpted surface. The majority of the 296’s downforce, however, is generated from beneath the car. Engineers have paid meticulous attention to the underbody design, not only optimizing airflow through channels and the rear diffuser but also carefully managing the underbody’s ground clearance to maximize the effectiveness of these downforce-generating elements. The 296 GTB variants sampled on a dedicated circuit during its launch were all equipped with the optional Assetto Fiorano package. This bespoke offering replaces the standard dampers with race-derived Multimatic units, further enhancing handling prowess. It also incorporates additional carbon fiber aerodynamic elements on the front end, contributing an additional 20kg of downforce. The cabin benefits from further carbon fiber applications, such as the door panels, and exterior trim, contributing to a total weight saving of 12kg. Opting for the Lexan rear engine cover further reduces weight by an additional 3kg. For the ultimate track-focused experience, the Assetto Fiorano package can be specified with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, a significant upgrade over the already capable standard Pilot Sport 4S. Furthermore, Assetto Fiorano-equipped cars can be adorned with a distinctive exterior graphics package, inspired by the iconic livery of the 1960s 250LM. Having spent considerable time with the 296 GTB, its aesthetic appeal is undeniable. It presents a striking and distinctive silhouette, arguably echoing the timeless beauty of the 250LM, even without the optional graphics package, which, while evocative, remains a point of personal taste for enthusiasts. Performance: A Symphony of Power and Responsiveness Initiating the drive is a simple, double-press action on the lower portion of the steering wheel boss, followed by engaging first gear. The 296 GTB defaults to Hybrid mode, utilizing electric power for initial propulsion unless explicitly overridden. By modulating throttle input, one can seamlessly glide through urban environments on electric power alone, provided the battery retains sufficient charge. The ability to manually select EV mode, overriding all powertrain demands, offers a silent sanctuary. Beyond this, dedicated Performance and Qualifying modes unleash the full collaborative potential of both the V6 and electric motor. Performance mode prioritizes sustained power delivery while intelligently managing battery replenishment, whereas Qualifying mode is engineered for uncompromised, all-out performance, disregarding battery state of charge. The experience of silently gliding through picturesque villages is a surprisingly delightful revelation. The damping sophistication ensures remarkable comfort, making it an exceptionally pleasant environment for covering long distances. Furthermore, the ‘frunk’ offers a surprisingly practical luggage space, a welcome advantage over the SF90. However, the true essence of the 296 GTB lies in unleashing its full hybrid potency. The immediate surge of acceleration, even from low revs in a high gear, is nothing short of astonishing. The absence of perceptible turbo lag, coupled with the immense torque from the combined powertrain, leads one to momentarily question the very necessity of gear changes such is the immediate thrust. Yet, with eight gears at its disposal and an engine that willingly spins to an 8500rpm redline, the full exploitation of the 296 GTB is an absolutely exhilarating experience. The acceleration figures, promising sub-3-second sprints to 60mph and a top speed exceeding 200mph, translate into a physical sensation of relentless forward propulsion. This is a car that elicits a mixture of intense exhilaration and nervous laughter, an addictive combination that underscores its serious performance credentials. The auditory experience complements the performance perfectly, with the V6’s melodious rasp beautifully underscored by subtle, engaging turbocharger sounds. Ride and Handling: A Masterclass in Agile Dynamics The responsiveness of the 296 GTB’s chassis is nothing short of remarkable. Ferrari’s assertion that this car was engineered to be “fun to drive” rings resoundingly true. It exhibits exceptional agility without ever feeling precariously nervous. The steering, typically light and direct as expected from Ferrari, is also remarkably communicative, providing nuanced feedback from the road surface. While the grip levels are predictably immense, the car’s true brilliance lies in its adjustability on the throttle, a trait that invariably brings a broad smile to the driver’s face. Despite its dry weight of 1470kg, the 296 GTB feels significantly lighter and more agile. There’s a palpable lack of inertia, encouraging the driver to work in harmony with the vehicle, making precise, small inputs and reveling in its accuracy and finesse. The ‘CT Off’ mode provides an incredible degree of freedom, offering the reassurance of an intelligent electronic guardian angel while allowing for spirited exploration. Even with all electronic aids deactivated, the inherent balance of the 296 GTB allows for controlled oversteer that one might not expect from a car producing 819bhp. On the track, the 296 GTB possesses the uncanny ability to dramatically condense even the longest straights. Its sharp, precise nature becomes even more apparent. While the power is readily available to break rear-wheel traction at numerous points around the circuit, the 296 GTB is exceptionally sensitive to braking and steering inputs. Drivers quickly learn that precision in control inputs yields the most profound rewards. The turn-in accuracy and responsiveness are phenomenal, drastically shortening the entry phase of every corner. Instead of easing into turns and gradually building load, the 296 GTB settles instantly, aided by its Multimatic dampers and hyper-quick steering, which beautifully complements the increased roll support offered by the Assetto Fiorano package. Even for those accustomed to more conventional sports cars, the sheer speed, precision, and agility of the 296 GTB are a truly joyous experience, lap after lap. Interior: A Fusion of Familiarity and Future Tech The cabin architecture will feel instantly familiar to anyone who has experienced the SF90. The 296 GTB extensively borrows from its flagship sibling, presenting a fully digital interface complemented by haptic switchgear. These controls, liberally applied to the steering wheel and traditional Ferrari pods flanking it, represent a departure from conventional buttonry. While undeniably complex, it’s a necessary consequence of managing the vast amount of information and functions this advanced machine offers. The primary critique lies in the occasional need for a second press for operations to register, or an uncertainty about whether an input has been successfully acknowledged. Nevertheless, the cabin exudes an undeniable sense of occasion and specialness. evo Car of the Year 2022 Verdict: A Return to Form “Now things get serious. When the scores were tallied, there was barely a hair’s breadth between the McLaren Artura and the Ferrari 296 GTB. The judges were evenly divided: three of us marginally favored the Ferrari, while three opted for the McLaren by a whisker.
The three who placed the 296 GTB at the top were myself, Meaden, and Bovingdon. ‘What a spectacular car,’ enthused Jethro. ‘Beautiful to behold, outrageously fast, amazingly exploitable, and so technically clever. Its V6 demonstrates to McLaren how to downsize while amplifying the drama. It matches the Artura in sheer control but feels a touch more playful and indulgent.’ ‘The first genuinely beautiful Ferrari since the F355,’ was Dickie’s verdict, a sentiment echoed by many. ‘The hybrid system works exceptionally well and doesn’t alter the driving experience as much as I had feared. This is likely because we’ve grown accustomed to the torquey characteristics of the turbocharged V8 in the 488 and F8. The 296 is stonkingly quick, but it doesn’t rely solely on speed, thanks to the character of the V6, which offers a consistently sweet soundtrack that evolves with throttle input.’ While Ferrari’s hybrid integration was widely lauded for its seamlessness, a critical incident occurred on the final night when the car was left stranded due to a depleted battery with no apparent means of revival. Ferrari had, to their credit, pre-warned of this possibility and provided guidance on preventative measures. However, it’s not inconceivable that an owner could find themselves in a similar predicament. As Gallagher noted, ‘It’s a significant oversight that a company renowned for pioneering individual rear-wheel steering cannot engineer a simple fail-safe to prevent such an occurrence.’ Fortunately for the 296 GTB, this event transpired after all scoring was completed. Ferrari’s signature ultra-quick steering divided opinion, and the brake feel didn’t quite match the best in the group. The technology interface also faced widespread criticism for its excessive complexity. However, beyond these points, the 296 GTB proved to be irresistibly seductive. ‘I initially thought I wouldn’t appreciate the Ferrari much – too complex, with rather gratuitous points of difference,’ admitted Vivian. ‘But in the end, I was somewhat bewitched: its uncanny ability to change direction, its astonishing damping, looney-tunes levels of grip, and the linearity of its seemingly endless power…’ ‘The 296 represents a significant return to form for Ferrari, especially after the SF90 left us somewhat underwhelmed last year. As Sutcliffe observed: ‘The 296 is far more successful because its technical sophistication, and particularly the integration of its hybrid technology, feels much more natural and far less intrusive.’ Gallagher concurred: ‘Ferrari has taken so much from the SF90, learned from that car, and distilled it into a series production model that stands as one of its very best.’ – Peter Tomalin, ecoty 2022.” Price and Rivals: The Evolving Supercar Landscape The inherent risk with technology-laden vehicles is the potential for them to become less than the sum of their parts. This was an observation we noted with the SF90, which, while dazzling in its power output, sometimes felt uncommunicative in its driving characteristics. The Ferrari 296 GTB, however, presents a distinctly different proposition. Its performance at the 2022 evo Car of the Year awards, where it shared third place with the McLaren Artura, highlighted its organic feel and the exquisite balance between raw power and engaging dynamics. It has, in essence, redefined what a supercar in the £250,000-plus price bracket can be. Rumors of a Versione Speciale variant—a high-performance derivative—are circulating, promising even greater power, intensity, and track-focused capability. The hope is that this enhanced version will retain the standard 296 GTB’s remarkably natural and intuitive feel. It is this crucial aspect of the 296 GTB’s intrinsic character that we fervently hope Lamborghini has prioritized in the development of its hybrid Temerario supercar. Over 900bhp is an almost obscene amount of power for a series-production supercar, and without a comprehensively resolved chassis and dynamic package to match, such immense power can easily become its undoing. If Lamborghini has indeed achieved a state of dynamic excellence—and their success with the Revuelto offers substantial reason for optimism—then we are poised for an epic twin test on our hands, potentially featuring a combined 1700bhp! Alternatively, we could elevate the stakes to a 2400bhp triple-threat by including the McLaren 750S, which, by comparison, now appears almost diminutive with its “mere” 740bhp. However, as previously noted, the McLaren’s comparatively lithe 1389kg kerb weight ensures a highly competitive power-to-weight ratio.
