The Pagani Utopia represents the culmination of over 25 years of pioneering automotive artistry, building upon the legendary legacies of the Zonda and Huayra. This, Pagani’s third distinct model line, embodies a unique character and an astounding 852 bhp twin-turbo V12 engine.
An Elemental Force of Nature
The sheer torque delivery of the Utopia is its defining characteristic. At 30 mph in a lower gear, a deep breath and a gentle application of the throttle initiate a profound surge of acceleration. This is not the abrupt jolt of an electric hypercar, but a rapid, intensifying longitudinal force that exhilarates and astonishes. The initial sensation evokes a primal reaction, followed swiftly by an adrenaline rush and an irrepressible sense of joy. The Utopia’s ability to propel its occupants towards the horizon with such immediacy never loses its novelty, highlighting the elemental appeal of this extraordinary machine.
A Modern Interpretation of Perfection
While Sir Thomas More envisioned societal perfection in his 16th-century treatise, Horacio Pagani has achieved a tangible form of it in his £2,200,000 Utopia. This 1280kg, 217mph hypercar, powered by an 852bhp twin-turbo V12, is a symphony of advanced composites and exotic alloys. For the select 99 customers who have secured a coupe build slot, this vision is a reality. For the automotive press, the Utopia offers a fleeting, vicarious experience, a chance to inhale the rarefied air of the ultra-high-net-worth automotive enthusiast on the finest roads.
A Rare Masterpiece
New Pagani model lines are infrequent events, with the Utopia being only the third in the company’s 26-year history. The wait, however, has proven to be unequivocally worthwhile.
Pagani’s evolution since our first visit in 1999 is evident. What began as a modest operation housed within a single building has transformed into the impressive ‘Atelier’ – Pagani’s headquarters and museum, opened in 2017. This facility now encompasses car production, restoration, personalization, and special projects, all while maintaining the legacy of its Art & Science Research Centre.
Our initial encounter with the Utopia was from the passenger seat, a testament to the trust and respect inherent in the handover of such vehicles. Riding shotgun with Pagani R&D test driver Alberto Scilla, we embarked on a journey towards the Futa Pass, a route steeped in Mille Miglia history and just 90 minutes from Pagani’s HQ. This allowed for an initial assessment of the car’s behaviour before taking the helm.
Even as a passenger, the Utopia delivers a fabulous experience. Its ride is surprisingly supple, and while the V12 engine is ever-present, it remains refined at lower speeds and throttle openings, only revealing its true might when unleashed. Pagani has always prioritized road car dynamics, and the Utopia elevates this with a new level of refinement alongside its breathtaking performance.
Scilla elaborated on the meticulous engineering behind the manual transmission, emphasizing the crucial balance between shift quality and clutch feel. Managing 811 lb ft of torque with the delicacy required for a traditional stick shift is a formidable challenge, yet the Utopia’s gearbox, evident in Scilla’s seamless shifts, demonstrates remarkable lightness of touch.
Cruising on the autostrada, the Utopia effortlessly carves through traffic, its presence commanding attention. The V12’s response to throttle inputs is immediate, producing a symphony of hisses and roars as boost pressure builds. This iteration of the AMG-built V12 offers a sweeter, sharper delivery than the Huayra’s, with a richer, more outgoing personality underscored by a steelier edge. It is, quite simply, an exceptional engine.
An Artistic Statement
Upon stopping for fuel and the highly anticipated driver’s seat transition, the Utopia’s magnetic appeal becomes undeniable. Bystanders, drawn by its captivating form, emerge as if from nowhere, eager to capture its essence on their devices. It is a testament to the enduring allure of a wide, low, and aesthetically magnificent automobile.
Despite spending the previous hour immersed in its presence, the Utopia’s mesmerizing design continues to captivate. Eschewing overt aerodynamic appendages, it prioritizes a more artistic pursuit, celebrating purity of form with lavish embellishment and striking flourishes. This unique fusion embodies Pagani’s distinctive aesthetic.
Even with the satisfyingly weighty Utopia-shaped key in hand, the urge to scrutinize its form persists. Every piece of brightwork, machined from billet, possesses a jewelry-like quality, contributing to the impression that the entire car has been sculpted from a single block of material.
The upswept dihedral doors, a departure from the Huayra’s gullwings and the Zonda’s conventional hinges, reveal an extraordinary cockpit. A dazzling exercise in maximalism, it is replete with exquisite materials and a riot of shapes and finishes. Familiar Pagani cues are present, from the periscope air vents and floating instrument binnacle to the flawless exposed carbon fibre structure and the expansive glazing that extends into the roof panel, enhancing light and a sense of space.
Celebrating Mechanical Prowess
True to its ethos, the Utopia celebrates the finest aspects of mechanical engineering. The analogue instruments, featuring small portholes revealing their inner workings, echo the craftsmanship of a fine Swiss watch. Rising from the transmission tunnel, the machined-from-solid gear shifter for the optional seven-speed manual transmission stands as a piece of automotive sculpture, its complex linkage proudly displayed.
Pagani’s passion for exquisite engineering, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s philosophy of the inseparability of art and science, is evident throughout the Utopia. The steering wheel, a prime example, begins life as a 43kg billet of high-grade alloy, undergoing 28 hours of five-axis machining to tolerances of just 0.5 microns, followed by meticulous hand-polishing. The resulting 1.6kg masterpiece is a testament to this dedication, with the 41.3kg of recycled swarf speaking to Pagani’s commitment to sustainability.
A Masterclass in Manual Driving Dynamics
Gone are the days of heavy clutch pedals in manual supercars. The Utopia’s clutch is light and smooth, requiring just enough effort to convey a mechanical feel, while offering a delightful ease of finding the bite point for seamless departures. The gear shifts are clean and precise, perhaps a fraction longer than expected but undeniably pleasing.
The inclusion of a dog-leg first gear adds a touch of nostalgia. In reality, the surge of torque from idle allows for effortless pull-away in second gear. However, the positive spring bias towards the centre line of the open gate ensures slick and precise upshifts to second and beyond, explaining why 70 percent of Utopia customers opt for the manual transmission.
Sophisticated Electronics for Enhanced Engagement
Despite its proudly analogue aesthetic, the Utopia benefits from advanced, fully integrated electronics. A choice of dynamic modes – Comfort, Sport, Race, and Wet – allows for fine-tuning of the car’s demeanor, while a Supersoft mode offers instant access to the most compliant suspension setting.
The semi-active TracTive dampers are exceptionally well-judged, providing an impressive balance of bump absorption and body control. Sport mode serves as a spirited default, injecting a shot of adrenaline without rendering the car overly frenetic. The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) offers reassuring oversight, subtly intervening to manage corner exit traction when throttle application becomes overly enthusiastic, all while maintaining blistering progress, particularly once the Pirelli P Zero Corsas warm to their task.
Engaging Race mode presents a moment of introspection, a contemplation of the potential consequences of pushing a £2.2m masterpiece too close to its limits. However, a compromise is reached: Race mode is selected, but the ESC button remains untouched. This decision proves judicious. Race mode unlocks the Utopia’s full performance potential, while the more relaxed ESC allows for a controlled and enjoyable degree of rear-wheel oversteer, balanced by dependable intervention.
The Thrill of Mechanical Symphony
Accelerating through the gears in the Utopia is akin to riding a rocket. The AMG-designed and hand-built Pagani V12, while not a screamer with a 6700rpm redline, offers an engaging experience with each gear change to be savored. Third and fourth gears become the primary domain, with occasional forays into fifth and downshifts to second. In Race mode, the V12’s bellow intensifies, becoming harder and more guttural under power, complemented by a symphony of induction and turbocharger chuffs and gurgles during throttle modulation. The off-throttle experience is equally captivating, with a bass-heavy artillery salute emanating from the Gatling-gun exhaust on the overrun.
This raw, explosive power contrasts with the Utopia’s seductive shape and refined character. However, its precision, poise, and illusion of compactness are entirely contemporary. Historically, supercars of this size often embraced their unwieldiness. Yet, modern advancements, exemplified by torque-vectoring hybrids, have redefined expectations. Pagani’s inherent advantage lies in its lightweight, titanium-infused carbon fibre construction and mechanical purity, circumventing the need for complex mass-mitigation solutions. The Utopia, while timeless in its objectives, has moved with the times.
Power-to-weight ratios, while numerically impressive, do not always translate directly to driving feel. The 1280kg dry (1340kg wet), 852bhp, 811lb ft Utopia, though outgunned by EVs like the Pininfarina Battista or the Bugatti Chiron in raw figures, feels more energized and alert due to its significantly lower mass.
On the more challenging sections of the Futa Pass, this translates to colossal potency between corners, coupled with an eagerness to embrace braking zones and apexes. The car feels natural, predictable, and even exploitable, encouraging deeper exploration of its prodigious performance reserves. The steering is light and precise, offering quick responses yet maintaining sufficient calmness for accurate and consistent apex targeting. The ability to precisely place the inside front wheel is uncanny. Initially, a desire for fractionally more tactile connection might arise, but with extended driving, the lack of distraction becomes apparent as part of the Utopia’s deliberate design. Coupled with the light clutch, fluid gearbox, and titanic powerplant, the driving experience becomes one of harmony, not struggle.
The same confidence extends to the massive 410mm front and 390mm rear Brembo CCM-R brakes. The colossal six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers exert progressive clamping force on the vast carbon rotors. Easily modulated at low speeds, they offer relentless bite at higher velocities, with a consistently firm pedal providing unwavering confidence.
Transcending Convention
The magic of the Utopia lies in its ability to transcend conventional hypercar doctrine. While undeniably powerful and lightning fast, its name suggests an emphasis on delivering perfect harmony rather than pursuing extremes at the expense of the overall experience. The marriage of the monumental biturbo V12 to a sweet-shifting manual gearbox is transformative. Furthermore, the decision not to chase four-digit horsepower figures or extreme redlines results in a powertrain offering eye-widening, and crucially, nuanced performance that excels on the road at all speeds. Its compliance with global emissions and homologation regulations underscores Pagani’s meticulous approach and the invaluable partnership with AMG as its engine supplier.
Sophisticated electronics, often perceived as antithetical to organic, analogue driving experiences, are here masterfully employed. The deft application of adaptive damping, ESC, and the electronic differential refines and, when necessary, tames the Utopia, enhancing the feel and dynamism that discerning drivers crave.
The result is a savagely quick and sublimely sorted automobile. It combines the Zonda-style purity and engagement with the epic reach and modern refinements of the Huayra, all while imbuing its own authentic character and distinct capabilities. The Utopia moves the game forward, yet adheres to its own principles: contemporary where it matters, and timeless where it counts. Pagani has once again achieved automotive perfection.
Pagani Utopia Roadster: An Uncompromised Open-Air Experience
While Pagani has previously offered open-top versions of the Zonda and Huayra, the Utopia marks the first time the coupe and Roadster designs have been developed concurrently. This integrated approach has resulted in a vehicle with even fewer compromises. The dry weight remains an identical 1280kg to the coupe, with Pagani’s mastery of carbon fibre ensuring the bespoke tub retains exceptional rigidity without the need for additional reinforcement. Like its coupe counterpart, the Utopia Roadster benefits from worldwide homologation for safety and emissions.
However, build numbers and price have increased compared to the coupe. Pagani is asking £3.1 million for each of the 130 Roadsters slated for production, with an annual output anticipated between 50 and 60 units.
