Porsche 911 GT3 RS 992.2: A Track-Focused Masterpiece Nears Debut
When Porsche first unveiled the GT3 variant of the 996 911 back in 1999, it was widely regarded as the ultimate track-focused 911. With its race-tuned flat-six engine, lightweight construction, and homologated development, it was the pinnacle of Porsche engineering for track enthusiasts. However, the engineers at Porsche clearly believed they could do even better.
Following the launch of the facelifted 996.2 GT3, Porsche decided to push the boundaries even further. They shaved even more weight through lighter wheels and body panels, gave the engine a slight horsepower increase, and subtly tweaked the aerodynamics. The result was the GT3 RS, a car so hardcore and race-derived that it made the standard GT3 seem ordinary and tame. For the past two decades, it has been an icon at every track day and driving event.
The current GT3 RS, the 992.1 variant, takes the track-focused approach to new levels of hardcore performance. It features a carbon fibre bonnet with a central radiator and “nostril” outlets that channel airflow over the roof. It also boasts a hydraulically adjustable front splitter and underbody flaps, similar to the Turbo S, and an enormous swan-neck rear wing with DRS, reminiscent of an F1 car or a McLaren P1.
The 992.1 GT3 RS also features adjustable race-derived suspension, dynamic engine mounts, large air intakes, side skirts, and a 4.0L 525 horsepower naturally aspirated flat-six engine. The result of all these enhancements is a 0-62mph acceleration time of 3.2 seconds, 860kg of downforce at 177mph, and a blistering lap record around the Nürburgring of 6:44.85. It is as far removed from the standard GT3 as an eagle is from a swallow.
Recent spy shots reveal that the camouflaged facelifted 992.2 GT3 RS is under development, and appropriately, its testing is taking place at the Nürburgring. As with every 911, this new model looks almost identical to the outgoing 992.1. It features the same central radiator with “nostril” outlets, the same enormous swan-neck rear wing with DRS, large air intakes, side skirts, and even the same door handles.
It even retains the lower-mounted blinkers, a design feature that was removed for most 992.2 models, where the blinkers are integrated into the headlights. The rear diffuser has been slightly redesigned with new, small, subtle air intakes on either side of the exhaust. It remains unclear whether the new car will feature the digital dashboard found in the rest of the 992.2 range, but for the most part, it continues to be the aggressive yet highly effective track car that the GT3 RS has always been.
Some rumors have suggested that the new model will feature the 3.6L twin-turbo hybrid flat-six engine found in most 992.2 models. This would undoubtedly boost power well beyond the 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six of the previous model. However, it is unlikely that this will be the case for the new GT3 RS.
For starters, if Porsche intended to standardize the hybrid engine, they would have included it in the standard GT3, which they did not. Secondly, even though the engineers at Porsche have worked wonders with this new unit, it is still heavier than the existing flat-six engine. A heavier engine is detrimental to any GT3 RS, which is designed to be as lightweight as possible.
Most importantly, fitting a hybrid engine solely for the sake of increased power undermines the spirit of the GT3 RS. At their core, GT3 and GT3 RS models are track-focused sports cars designed to thrill drivers, not supercars built to break lap records.
For those seeking ultimate performance, there is the upcoming GT2 RS, which will more than likely feature the 3.6L hybrid flat-six engine. Ultimately, Porsche understands that to appeal to GT3 RS customers, they must create the most pure, mechanical, and thrilling track car on the market. Fitting it with anything other than its 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six engine feels fundamentally wrong, especially considering that this might be the last hurrah for that iconic engine.
Recently, Mercedes released spy shots of the new track-focused AMG GT, which will likely rival either the GT3 RS or the GT2 RS. While the new AMG GT looks incredibly impressive, there is no doubt that it will need to be exceptionally fast to match the performance of the GT3 RS. Ultimately, there is a reason why the GT3 RS has remained so popular for two decades. As the end of an era approaches, there is no denying that if this is the swan song, it will go out with a flat-six roar and bang.
