The combination of the V6 and electric motor produces a staggering 819 horsepower, making the 296 GTB a force to be reckoned with. While the headline power figure is staggering, it’s easy to wonder how any driver can harness such immense performance. But that’s a discussion for another day. The 296 GTB represents a pivotal moment in Ferrari’s evolution. It’s the first V6-powered road car, featuring a “hot-vee” turbocharger configuration, and yes, it’s a plug-in hybrid with an electric-only range of around 15 miles. The V6 engine is mounted low in a new aluminum chassis, with a shortened wheelbase compared to previous V8 models, positioning the occupants slightly further forward for optimal weight distribution and handling. The Technical Symphony: Powertrain and Aerodynamics The electric motor contributes an impressive 165 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque, while the V6 engine itself produces a mind-blowing 654 horsepower and 546 lb-ft of torque. The interior benefits from carbon fiber door panels and other lightweight components, resulting in a total weight saving of 12 kg. This figure increases to 15 kg with the optional Lexan rear engine cover. For those seeking ultimate track performance, the Assetto Fiorano package offers Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, replacing the standard Pilot Sport 4S. This variant can also be ordered with an exterior graphics package inspired by the 1960s 250LM. Seeing the 296 GTB up close, especially in the Assetto Fiorano specification, is a breathtaking experience. It is undeniably a beautiful car, unlike anything else on the road, and it echoes the iconic 250LM of the 1960s, even without the polarizing graphics. The Pure Rush: Performance, Acceleration, and Driveability To get moving, drivers must press the bottom of the steering wheel boss twice and engage the first gear. The 296 GTB always starts in Hybrid mode, allowing for electric-only propulsion as long as the battery has charge. Drivers can switch to EV mode regardless of throttle input, or choose between Performance and Qualifying modes. In these modes, both power sources work together; Performance mode balances power with battery conservation, while Qualifying prioritizes ultimate performance, ignoring battery levels. Gliding quietly through villages is an unexpected pleasure, and the damping is so sophisticated that the car is surprisingly comfortable for long-distance driving. There’s even a reasonable luggage area in the frunk, a significant advantage over the SF90. But the real question is: what does it feel like with the engine and electric motor fully unleashed? The answer is simple: exhilarating. Planting the throttle at low revs in a high gear results in an explosive surge forward with zero lag. The power is so immediate that you momentarily question the need for gears, but with eight gears available and an engine revving to 8500 rpm, the experience is absolutely breathtaking. As the specifications suggest, the 0-62 mph time is in the range of 2.9 seconds, with a top speed of 205 mph. The acceleration is intense, verging on the uncomfortable, but addictive at the same time. It is a seriously rapid car that also sounds divine, with the intoxicating roar of the V6 overlaid with the atmospheric sound of the turbochargers. A Masterpiece of Engineering: Ride and Handling Dynamics What’s truly impressive about the 296 GTB is its responsiveness. Ferrari wasn’t exaggerating when they stated their goal was to make the car fun to drive. It feels incredibly agile without being nervous. The steering is characteristically light and fast but offers exceptional detail. While grip levels are extremely high, the car remains throttle-adjustable, encouraging playful driving. Despite its dry weight of 1470 kg, the 296 GTB feels significantly lighter. The lack of inertia encourages driver interaction, rewarding precise inputs with accuracy and precision. The CT Off mode allows for incredible audacity with the reassuring knowledge that an intelligent electronic brain is always watching over the driver. However, even with all systems disabled, the natural balance of the 296 allows for oversteer in a way you wouldn’t expect from a 819hp car. On the track, the 296 GTB shrinks even long straights. Its precision as a sharp instrument is evident. The power is there to break rear traction at multiple points around the lap, but the 296 is also incredibly sensitive to braking and steering inputs, making it clear that precision is rewarded.
The incredible turn-in accuracy dramatically shortens the entry phase of every corner. Instead of easing the car into turns and allowing the load to build, the 296 takes its line immediately on the Multimatic dampers.
