Further intensifying the competitive pressure was the arrival of the McLaren 750S, a formidable evolution of the existing 720S platform, renowned for its supreme power-to-weight ratio. However, the true benchmark for the 296 GTB—and the yardstick against which its supremacy would be measured—emerged with the 903 bhp, 10,000rpm twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain of the Lamborghini Temerario. This machine represented Lamborghini’s direct, audacious response to the 819 bhp hybridized berlinetta of Maranello.
The sheer specification of the 296 GTB is nothing short of staggering. Featuring an entirely new 120-degree, twin-turbocharged V6 engine and a state-of-the-art electric motor, the 296 GTB propels itself solely through the rear wheels—a marked departure from the SF90’s all-wheel-drive architecture. This configuration liberates an astounding 819 bhp, effectively shattering traditional supercar conventions and challenging the very definition of what a road-legal production car is capable of achieving.
It is undeniably difficult to ignore such an awe-inspiring power figure. This escalates one’s contemplation regarding the ultimate zenith of performance limitations (a question that Maranello seemingly has no intention of answering, as evidenced by the Lamborghini Temerario’s imminent arrival) and invites contemplation about the practical applications of such blistering velocity. Nevertheless, these are philosophical inquiries that venture into the realm of pure automotive fantasy, distinct from the visceral reality of driving such a masterpiece.
The 296 GTB stands as Ferrari’s first road-legal V6-powered vehicle (the exquisite 246 GT Dino, though historically significant, never bore the Prancing Horse emblem in its period), marking the first time a “hot-vee” turbocharger configuration has been implemented in a road car. It is also a plug-in hybrid, offering an electric-only range of approximately 15 miles. The compact V6 engine is positioned low in a new aluminum chassis, featuring a wheelbase shortened by 50mm compared to its V8 predecessors. Consequently, the driver and passenger are situated slightly further forward, contributing to a more centralized mass and enhanced agility.
The electric motor delivers a potent 165 bhp and 232 lb-ft of torque, while the V6 engine, independently, produces a phenomenal 654 bhp and 546 lb-ft. The combined peak power output reaches a headline-grabbing 819 bhp. Ferrari, however, strategically refrains from disclosing the precise combined peak torque figure, likely due to the intricate interplay and synergistic dynamics of the combustion engine and electric motor working in concert. A Ferrari, by definition, is incomplete without its suite of acronyms denoting sophisticated electronic chassis management systems. For the 296 GTB, Ferrari developed a revolutionary six-axis sensor unit, designated as the 6w-CDS (6-way Chassis Dynamic Sensor), capable of measuring both acceleration and rotational velocity across the X, Y, and Z planes.
This advanced sensor replaces the conventional yaw rate sensor, and when integrated with the steering rack-mounted sensor, provides the vehicle with an unprecedented level of real-time telemetry. The system comprehends not only the driver’s inputs but also the instantaneous grip levels at the tire contact patch. This allows for the precise modulation of integrated systems such as Side Slip Control (SSC) and the active Electronic Differential (E-Diff) to maximize cornering velocity without compromising vehicle stability and security. Furthermore, it facilitates the operation of a novel braking system, ABS-evo, introduced in RACE mode and higher. Utilizing a brake-by-wire system, this technology significantly shortens braking distances while simultaneously improving braking performance during trail braking maneuvers.
For the first time in its history, Ferrari has utilized active aerodynamics not to reduce drag, but to augment downforce. The company quotes a figure of 360kg at 155 mph, with the rear wing, deployable from the rear decklid, contributing an additional 100kg to this aerodynamic masterpiece.
The front fascia houses two radiators dedicated to engine and gearbox cooling, complemented by two additional condensers specifically designed for battery thermal management. Hot air is expelled from the underbody to prevent interference with the cooling air directed into the intercoolers positioned along the flanks. The distinctive apertures located beneath the headlamps serve as air intakes for the braking system, while the wing integrated at the roofline effectively creates a “virtual” rear screen, channeling airflow rearward as if guided by a sculpted surface.
The vast majority of the 296 GTB’s downforce is generated beneath the car. The underbody design has been the subject of rigorous scrutiny, with particular emphasis placed not only on aerodynamic channeling and the rear diffuser but also on optimizing the ground clearance to enhance the effectiveness of the downforce-generating surfaces.
The initial prototypes of the 296 GTB, briefly sampled on a test track during the official launch event, were all equipped with the comprehensive Assetto Fiorano package. This specialized package replaces the standard dampers with Multimatic units derived from GT racing applications and incorporates additional carbon aerodynamic devices on the nose, increasing front downforce by 20kg.
Furthermore, the interior boasts additional carbon fiber components, such as the door panels, and the exterior features more extensive use of carbon fiber trim, contributing to an overall weight saving of 12kg. This figure increases to 15kg when the optional Lexan rear engine cover is specified. An additional enhancement available to Fiorano models is the selection of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, superseding the standard Pilot Sport 4S tires. Performance and Acceleration Dynamics
Initiating propulsion in the 296 GTB is a straightforward affair: double-tap the lower section of the steering wheel boss and engage first gear. The 296 defaults to Hybrid mode, allowing for seamless electric-only propulsion unless explicitly overridden via the haptic driver mode controls integrated into the left side of the steering wheel. By maintaining moderate throttle input, the vehicle remains in EV mode, provided the battery state of charge is sufficient.
Alternatively, drivers can engage EV mode independently of throttle demands, or opt for the further Performance and Qualifying modes. In both these modes, the combustion engine and electric motor operate in synergy. The Performance mode prioritizes overall powertrain optimization while ensuring the battery remains sufficiently charged, whereas the Qualifying mode unleashes the full potential of the hybrid system, irrespective of the battery’s charge status.
Effortlessly gliding through serene villages on electric power is an unexpected pleasure. The damping is so sophisticated that the 296 GTB proves to be a surprisingly comfortable companion for long-distance cruising. It even features a reasonably proportioned luggage compartment in the front trunk—a distinction it holds over the more performance-oriented SF90. However, what truly drives the curiosity of enthusiasts is the visceral experience of unleashing the full potential of both the engine and the electric motor.
The true essence of the 296 GTB’s performance is revealed when engaging a high gear at low revs. The car surges forward with an electrifying immediacy, an absence of lag that momentarily makes one question the necessity of gears, such is the sheer potency on tap. Nevertheless, the eight-speed transmission offers a vast expanse of performance to exploit, and an engine that redlines at an exhilarating 8,500 rpm. When the 296 GTB is truly unleashed, the effect is absolutely astonishing.
As the technical specifications suggest (0-62 mph in 2.9 seconds, with a top speed exceeding 205 mph), the acceleration is the kind that elicits an instinctive grip on the steering wheel and nervous laughter, bordering on the edge of being uncomfortable, yet paradoxically addictive.
