For a decade, the landscape of supercars has been a canvas of roaring V8s and soul-stirring V10s, a symphony of internal combustion that defined exhilaration. As an industry expert with ten years immersed in this high-octane world, I’ve witnessed firsthand the relentless pursuit of power and refinement. Yet, even with that extensive experience, the arrival and continued impact of the Ferrari 296 GTB in 2022 felt like a seismic shift. Now, as whispers of the Lamborghini Temerario, a rumored 10,000rpm, 903bhp hybrid behemoth, grow louder, the 296 GTB’s significance is amplified, presenting a compelling benchmark for what comes next in the world of ultra-high-performance automobiles. The 296 GTB represents an unprecedented departure for Ferrari’s mid-engined supercar lineage. It audaciously cast aside the multi-award-winning twin-turbo V8 in favor of an entirely new twin-turbocharged V6, augmented by an electric motor. This bold move placed the 296 GTB at the vanguard of a segment that was only beginning to grapple with the inevitability of hybrid powertrains. At its debut, its primary rival was the Lamborghini Huracán, a naturally aspirated V10 marvel that, while lower on outright power, offered an intoxicating blend of V10 charisma and raw auditory drama. The McLaren 720S, with its potent twin-turbo V8, also presented a formidable challenge, a car that continued to build upon its legacy of power-to-weight supremacy. The forthcoming Lamborghini Temerario, however, with its staggering 903bhp and 10,000rpm redline, appears to be a direct and audacious riposte to Maranello’s 819bhp electrified Berlinetta, promising a new echelon of hybrid supercar performance. Make no mistake, the 296 GTB is an absolute powerhouse. Its all-new, 120-degree twin-turbo V6 engine, combined with a sophisticated electric motor, propels the rear wheels with a combined output of 819 horsepower. This electrified architecture, unlike the SF90 Stradale which employs AWD, focuses its potent blend of power solely on the rear axle, a decision that undoubtedly contributes to its distinct driving character. The 296 GTB didn’t just enter the supercar arena; it fundamentally redefined its conventions, pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible in a road-legal Ferrari. The sheer scale of its performance figures is enough to make one pause and ponder the trajectory of automotive evolution, questioning not only where this relentless pursuit of power will ultimately lead but also where, on public roads, such immense capability can be safely and responsibly unleashed. The 296 GTB holds a unique place in Ferrari’s illustrious history. It marks the brand’s first V6-powered road car, a nod to the legendary 246 GT Dino, though the Dino never bore the iconic Prancing Horse emblem during its production. Furthermore, it pioneers Ferrari’s ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger configuration, where the turbos are nestled within the engine’s V-angle for optimal packaging and responsiveness. As a plug-in hybrid, it offers a practical electric-only range of approximately 15 miles, allowing for silent, emissions-free urban excursions. The compact V6 is positioned low within a bespoke aluminum chassis, featuring a wheelbase shortened by 50mm compared to its V8 predecessors, and the occupants are seated slightly further forward, contributing to its agile proportions. The electric motor alone contributes a substantial 165bhp and 232lb ft of torque, while the V6 engine independently produces a breathtaking 654bhp and 546lb ft. Ferrari, characteristically, refrains from quoting a combined peak torque figure, likely due to the complex interplay between the V6 and the electric motor. However, it’s safe to surmise that the resulting torque is nothing short of colossal, a crucial element in its supercar acceleration capabilities. The V6 powertrain itself offers a significant weight saving of 30kg over Ferrari’s V8s, and it’s seamlessly integrated with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The battery pack, a long, rectangular structure, resides discreetly behind the seats, a testament to clever packaging. No Ferrari is complete without an array of sophisticated electronic chassis control systems, and the 296 GTB is no exception. At its heart lies the innovative six-axis sensor, dubbed 6w-CDS (Six-Way Chassis Dynamic Sensor). This advanced unit meticulously measures acceleration and rotational speed across the X, Y, and Z planes, effectively replacing conventional yaw sensors. In conjunction with a sensor on the steering rack, the 6w-CDS provides the car with an unparalleled understanding of the driver’s intentions and the vehicle’s real-time grip levels at the tire contact patches. This data feeds into systems like the renowned Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, working in concert to maximize cornering speeds while maintaining unwavering stability. A notable innovation enabled by this technology is ABS-evo, introduced in RACE mode and above. Integrated with the 296’s brake-by-wire system, ABS-evo not only shortens braking distances but also significantly enhances braking performance during trail-braking maneuvers into corners, a critical technique for maximizing lap times on a track-focused supercar. For the first time in its history, Ferrari is employing its active aerodynamics not to reduce drag, but to actively generate downforce. The firm quotes an impressive figure of 360kg of downforce at 155mph, with a substantial 100kg of this generated by the deployable rear wing. The car’s aerodynamic efficiency is further enhanced by a network of cooling systems. Two radiators in the front manage engine and gearbox temperatures, while two additional condensers cater to the battery’s cooling needs. Hot air is ingeniously expelled beneath the car, ensuring it doesn’t interfere with the airflow directed to the intercoolers positioned along the flanks. Small apertures beneath the headlamps are dedicated to cooling the brakes, while a wing integrated into the roofline creates a “virtual” rear screen, effectively channeling air towards the rear of the car as if guided by a physical surface. The majority of the 296’s downforce is generated from beneath the chassis, where meticulous attention has been paid to airflow management, the rear diffuser, and crucially, the underbody’s ground clearance to optimize the effectiveness of these downforce-generating elements. Our initial encounters with the 296 GTB, at its track launch, were exclusively with models equipped with the optional Assetto Fiorano package. This performance-oriented upgrade replaces the standard dampers with Multimatic units, derived from GT racing technology, and adds further carbon-fiber aerodynamic enhancements to the front, boosting front downforce by an additional 20kg. The cabin also benefits from increased use of carbon fiber, including door panels, and further carbon fiber accents adorn the exterior, contributing to an overall weight saving of 12kg. This can be extended to 15kg with the optional Lexan rear engine cover. For the ultimate grip, Assetto Fiorano clients can specify Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, a significant upgrade over the standard Pilot Sport 4S. Visually, Assetto Fiorano cars can also be ordered with an exterior graphics package, drawing inspiration from the iconic 250LM of the 1960s, adding a touch of historical racing pedigree. Visually, the 296 GTB is undeniably stunning, a unique and captivating design that evokes the spirit of its illustrious predecessors without resorting to mere imitation. Initiating motion in the 296 GTB is as simple as a double-press of the lower steering wheel boss and engaging first gear. The car defaults to Hybrid mode, offering silent, electric-only propulsion unless explicitly overridden by the driver. As long as the battery retains charge and throttle inputs are moderate, the 296 glides effortlessly, a testament to its dual-personality nature. The driver can also manually select full EV mode, irrespective of performance demands, or choose between Performance and Qualifying modes. In these more aggressive settings, both the V6 engine and electric motor operate in tandem. Performance mode prioritizes exhilarating acceleration while also managing battery charge levels, whereas Qualifying mode unleashes the absolute pinnacle of performance, with battery charge becoming a secondary concern. The quiet serenity of gliding through picturesque villages is an unexpected, yet delightful, facet of the 296 GTB experience. The sophisticated damping imbues the cabin with remarkable comfort, making it a surprisingly adept long-distance cruiser. Even the luggage space in the “frunk” is surprisingly practical, a welcome improvement over the SF90 Stradale. But, the true test, the question that burns in the minds of enthusiasts, is the sensation when both power sources are fully engaged. The sheer potency is evident the moment you plant the throttle at low revs in a high gear. The 296 surges forward with an immediate, lag-free response, compelling you to momentarily question the necessity of gear changes, such is its relentless thrust. However, the presence of eight precisely calibrated gears, coupled with an engine that eagerly winds to 8,500rpm, offers a delightful spectrum of performance. Unleashing the full fury of the 296 GTB is an experience that can only be described as utterly startling. The acceleration figures, which speak to a 0-62mph time well under three seconds and a top speed exceeding 200mph, translate into a visceral sensation that borders on the uncomfortable, a delightful blend of hold-on-tight intensity and nervous laughter. It is, without question, a seriously rapid machine. The auditory experience is equally compelling, with a symphony of turbocharger effects harmoniously overlaid with the tuneful rasp of the V6, creating a Ferrari V6 sound that is both dramatic and refined. The truly remarkable aspect of the 296 GTB’s performance lies in its chassis responsiveness. Ferrari’s claim of making the car “fun to drive” is not hyperbole; it’s a demonstrable reality. The handling is incredibly agile without ever feeling nervous or unpredictable. The steering, typically light and lightning-fast, also delivers surprising tactile feedback, allowing the driver to feel connected to the road. While the grip levels are exceptionally high, as one would expect from a car of this caliber, the 296 GTB remains remarkably throttle-adjustable, encouraging playful engagement and eliciting genuine grins. Despite its dry weight of 1470kg, the car feels significantly lighter, possessing an inertia that invites intuitive, small inputs and rewards the driver with astonishing accuracy and precision. Engaging CT Off mode provides a remarkable degree of freedom, allowing for daring maneuvers with the reassurance of an exceptionally intelligent electronic safety net. Even with all electronic aids deactivated, the inherent balance of the 296 GTB allows for controllable oversteer, a feat that seems almost improbable in a car producing 819 horsepower.
On the racetrack, the 296 GTB possesses the remarkable ability to seemingly compress even the longest straights. What becomes even more apparent is its surgical precision. While the power is ample to break rear-wheel traction at numerous points around the lap, the 296 is acutely sensitive to braking and steering inputs. It quickly becomes evident that precision in control inputs yields the greatest rewards. The turn-in accuracy and response are phenomenal, dramatically shortening the entry phase of every corner. Instead of gradually loading the chassis into turns, the 296 settles instantly into its line, aided by the Multimatic dampers. The hyper-quick steering perfectly complements the enhanced roll support of the Assetto Fiorano setup. Even for those accustomed to more mature sports cars, the sheer speed, precision, and agility of the 296 GTB are phenomenal, offering a joy that is consistently repeatable lap after lap. The interior architecture of the 296 GTB will feel familiar to anyone who has experienced the SF90 Stradale, as it shares a significant design influence. The fully digital interface, coupled with its haptic touch-sensitive controls, presents a unique, albeit sometimes challenging, user experience. These controls are liberally applied to the steering wheel and traditional Ferrari pods flanking it. While undoubtedly complex, there is a vast amount of information to convey. The primary criticism lies in the occasional need for a second press to register a command, or uncertainty as to whether a press has been successful at all. Despite these minor frustrations, the cabin undeniably exudes a sense of occasion and exclusivity, a special place to inhabit. In the renowned evo Car of the Year 2022 awards, the Ferrari 296 GTB found itself in a fiercely contested battle, narrowly missing out on outright victory. The review noted the incredibly tight scoring between the 296 GTB and the McLaren Artura, with judges almost perfectly divided. Three esteemed road testers, including myself, narrowly favored the Ferrari, while three others placed the McLaren marginally ahead. The sentiments expressed were overwhelmingly positive. Jethro Bovingdon enthused, “What a spectacular car. Beautiful to look at, outrageously fast, amazingly exploitable, and so technically clever. Its V6 shows McLaren how to downsize but turn up the drama, and it matches the Artura in terms of sheer control but feels a bit more playful and indulgent.” Dickie Meaden echoed this sentiment, declaring it “The first genuinely beautiful Ferrari since the F355,” a verdict widely shared. He continued, “The hybrid system works very well and doesn’t change the driving experience as much as I’d feared. Probably because we’ve already got used to the torquey characteristics of the turbocharged V8 in the 488 and F8. The 296 is stonkingly quick, but doesn’t rely solely on speed thanks to the character of the V6, which has a soundtrack that’s always sweet and changes with throttle opening.” While the hybrid integration was widely praised for its seamlessness, a notable incident occurred where a test car was stranded due to a flat battery, with no apparent means of recovery. Ferrari had indeed cautioned about such possibilities, but the incident highlighted a potential oversight: the lack of a simple fail-safe mechanism to prevent the car from becoming immobile. Fortunately for the 296 GTB, this occurred after scoring was complete. Despite this, criticisms also centered on Ferrari’s signature super-quick steering, which divided opinion, and brake feel that didn’t quite match the absolute best in the group. The tech interface also faced widespread criticism for its complexity. Nevertheless, the 296 GTB proved irresistibly seductive. Vivian had initially harbored reservations, deeming it “too complex, rather gratuitous points of difference,” but ultimately found himself “somewhat bewitched” by its “spooky way it changes direction; its amazing damping and looney-tunes levels of grip; the linearity of seemingly never-ending power.” As Peter Tomalin, editor of evo, summarized the 2022 awards, “The 296 is way more successful because its technical sophistication, and the integration of its hybrid technology in particular, feels much more natural, and far less intrusive. Ferrari has taken so much from the SF90, learnt from that car and distilled it into a series production model that’s one of its very best.” This represents a significant return to form for Ferrari, especially following the somewhat colder reception of the SF90. The very nature of incorporating such advanced technology into a vehicle invariably carries the risk of the sum being less than its parts. This was a sentiment echoed in our assessment of the SF90, which, despite its dazzling power, sometimes unnerved with its challenging driving characteristics. However, the 296 GTB is a fundamentally different proposition. Its organic feel and the harmonious blend of immense power and engaging dynamics strike a remarkable sweet spot, effectively redefining the benchmark for a supercar in the £250,000 bracket. The anticipation of a Versione Speciale variant, promising even greater power, performance, and intensity, only heightens expectations. The crucial question remains whether this forthcoming iteration will retain the 296’s inexplicably natural and accessible driving feel. It is precisely this accessible and engaging nature that we hope Lamborghini has prioritized in the development of its hybrid Temerario supercar. Over 900 horsepower is an almost obscene amount of power for a series-production supercar, and if the supporting chassis and dynamics are not meticulously resolved, such a figure can easily overwhelm the driver. If Lamborghini has indeed managed to achieve the same level of cohesion and driver engagement that characterized the Revuelto, then the stage is set for a truly monumental twin-turbo V8 hybrid vs V6 hybrid supercar comparison. Alternatively, we could witness a staggering 2400bhp triple threat, including the McLaren 750S. Astonishingly, this model, with its 740bhp, could be considered the “minnow” of this hypercar class. However, its relatively petite kerb weight of 1389kg grants it a competitive power-to-weight ratio. The McLaren’s raw, engaging character, ergonomic brilliance, razor-sharp steering, and exquisitely tuned chassis undoubtedly set it apart from the comparatively more remote-feeling Ferrari. The choice between these automotive titans offers a fascinating glimpse into the diverse philosophies driving modern luxury sports car manufacturers. For those seeking the pinnacle of electrified performance and an experience that transcends traditional supercar paradigms, the Ferrari 296 GTB stands as a monumental achievement. Its blend of exhilarating power, sophisticated technology, and surprisingly accessible dynamics offers an unparalleled driving sensation.
