The 2025 Ferrari 296 GTB: A Hybrid Revolution Redefining Supercar Dynamics As an industry veteran with a decade immersed in the exhilarating world of high-performance automotive engineering, I’ve witn
essed firsthand the relentless march of progress. Few vehicles embody this evolution as profoundly as the 2025 Ferrari 296 GTB. This isn’t just another supercar; it’s a paradigm shift, a meticulously crafted statement on the future of attainable hypercar performance. While the whispers of a 900+ horsepower, 10,000rpm hybrid rival from Lamborghini, the much-anticipated Temerario, are growing louder, the 296 GTB stands as a testament to Ferrari’s audacious vision, proving that an electrified future doesn’t necessitate a compromise on soul-stirring driving pleasure. The arrival of the 296 GTB in 2022 marked an unprecedented departure for Ferrari’s mid-engined supercar lineage. The departure from the multi-award-winning twin-turbo V8 in favor of a brand-new twin-turbo V6, synergistically augmented by electric power, was a bold move. This paved the way for a higher-tier supercar segment that is still in the nascent stages of its hybrid transition. In its early days, the 296 GTB faced traditional adversaries like the Lamborghini Huracán, celebrated for its naturally aspirated V10 symphony and raw auditory charisma. It also contended with the formidable McLaren 720S, which relied on its potent twin-turbo V8. While the McLaren 750S represents an evolution, trading on its power-to-weight supremacy, the impending 903bhp, 10,000rpm twin-turbo V8 hybrid Temerario is clearly Lamborghini’s potent retort to Maranello’s 819bhp electrified Berlinetta. Make no mistake, the 296 GTB possesses an awe-inspiring arsenal of power. Its all-new, 120-degree, twin-turbo V6 engine, working in concert with an electric motor, exclusively drives the rear wheels – a distinction from the SF90. This potent combination unlocks a staggering 819bhp, fundamentally challenging established supercar conventions. The sheer magnitude of this power output naturally sparks contemplation about the ultimate ceiling of such performance escalation and, more pragmatically, where one might ethically and legally harness such a force. However, these are discussions for another forum. What truly sets the 296 GTB apart is its pioneering spirit. It proudly holds the distinction of being the first V6-powered Ferrari road car – a lineage separate from the iconic, though never officially badged as Ferrari, 246 GT Dino. It’s also the first to incorporate a ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger configuration and, crucially, is a plug-in hybrid with a commendable EV-only range of approximately 15 miles. This compact V6 is strategically positioned low within a novel aluminum chassis, featuring a wheelbase shortened by 50mm compared to its V8 predecessors, and a cabin that is subtly shifted forward, placing occupants in a more engaging position. The electric motor contributes an impressive 165bhp and 232 lb-ft of torque, while the V6 engine alone unleashes a staggering 654bhp and 546 lb-ft. The headline combined figure of 819bhp is a marvel, yet Ferrari judiciously refrains from quoting a specific combined peak torque figure. This is likely due to the intricate interplay between the engine and electric motor, but it’s safe to surmise that the resulting torque delivery is nothing short of considerable. In total, the V6 unit offers a weight saving of 30kg over Ferrari’s V8 engines and is mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The battery pack, a sleek, oblong structure, resides discreetly behind the seats.
It simply wouldn’t be a Ferrari without an intricate suite of acronym-laden electronic chassis management systems. For the 296 GTB, Ferrari has engineered a revolutionary six-axis sensor system, dubbed 6w-CDS (six-way Chassis Dynamic Sensor). This advanced sensor meticulously measures acceleration and rotational velocity across the X, Y, and Z planes. By superseding the conventional yaw sensor and collaborating with a sensor integrated into the steering rack, the system gains unparalleled insight into both driver intentions and the nuanced grip levels at the tire contact patch. This sophisticated understanding allows it to dynamically optimize systems like Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, maximizing cornering speeds while steadfastly preserving stability and occupant security. Furthermore, it enables the novel ABS-evo system, accessible in RACE mode and above. Employing the 296’s brake-by-wire technology, ABS-evo not only shortens braking distances but also enhances braking performance during trail-braking maneuvers into corners. For the first time, Ferrari is leveraging its active aerodynamics not for drag reduction, but to generate substantial downforce. The company quotes a remarkable figure of 360kg at 155mph, with up to 100kg of this generated by an active rear wing that gracefully deploys from the rear of the car. The cooling architecture is equally impressive. Two radiators are strategically located in the front fascia for engine and gearbox cooling, complemented by two additional condensers dedicated to battery thermal management. Hot air is expelled from the underbody to prevent interference with the cooling air directed towards the intercoolers along the flanks. The subtle apertures beneath the headlamps are dedicated to channeling air for brake cooling, while the roofline-integrated rear spoiler functions as a ‘virtual’ rear screen, guiding airflow to the rear of the car as if it were flowing over a sculpted surface. The majority of the 296’s downforce is meticulously sculpted beneath the car, where particular emphasis has been placed on optimizing airflow, the rear diffuser, and crucially, the underbody ground clearance to amplify the effectiveness of these downforce-generating surfaces. The examples of the 296 GTB we briefly sampled on track during its launch were all equipped with the Assetto Fiorano package. This optional upgrade replaces the standard dampers with race-derived Multimatic units, directly inspired by those found in GT racing. It also introduces additional carbon fiber aerodynamic elements to the front, augmenting front downforce by an additional 20kg. The cabin benefits from further carbon fiber applications, such as the door panels, and exterior enhancements, contributing to an overall weight reduction of 12kg. This can be further enhanced by an additional 3kg if the optional Lexan rear engine cover is specified. For those seeking the ultimate track-focused experience, the Fiorano package also offers Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, replacing the standard Pilot Sport 4S. Fiorano-equipped cars can also be personalized with an exterior graphics package, paying homage to the iconic 250LM of the 1960s. Having spent considerable time with the 296 GTB in person, its aesthetic appeal is undeniable. It possesses a distinct and captivating visual identity, drawing subtle inspiration from the 1960s 250LM, even without the more polarizing graphics package. This is a car that commands attention. Performance and Driving Dynamics: A New Benchmark Initiating forward motion is elegantly simple: a double press on the lower section of the steering wheel boss, followed by selecting first gear. The 296 GTB defaults to Hybrid mode, gracefully departing on electric power alone unless explicitly overridden via the haptic driver mode selectors on the left side of the steering wheel boss. Maintaining gentle throttle application ensures a silent, purely electric glide, provided sufficient battery charge is available. For those who wish to embrace the electric ethos exclusively, a dedicated EV mode can be selected, irrespective of powertrain demands. Beyond this, drivers can select between Performance and Qualifying modes. In both scenarios, both power sources operate in tandem. Performance mode prioritizes exhilarating acceleration while simultaneously aiming to replenish battery charge. Qualifying mode, however, unleashes the absolute pinnacle of performance, disregarding battery charge depletion. The unexpected serenity of gliding through urban landscapes is a revelation, and the sophisticated damping ensures a surprisingly comfortable experience for covering significant distances. Even the luggage space in the front ‘frunk’ is reasonably practical, a welcome departure from the SF90. However, the true anticipation lies in experiencing the full fury of both the internal combustion engine and the electric motor unleashed in unison. The immediate surge of acceleration when planting the throttle at low revs in a high gear is startling. The 296 GTB simply bolts forward with zero perceptible lag, prompting a fleeting reconsideration of the necessity of gears, such is its immediate potency. Yet, with eight gears at its disposal and an engine that willingly revs to 8500rpm, the experience of truly unleashing the 296 is nothing short of astonishing. As the performance figures suggest – a sub-3-second 0-62mph sprint and a top speed exceeding 200mph – the rate of acceleration is in the ‘hold-on-tight/nervous-laughter’ category. It’s almost uncomfortably visceral, yet paradoxically, utterly addictive. This is a seriously rapid machine, and its auditory character is equally compelling. The V6 rasp is tuneful, beautifully overlaid with a symphony of turbocharger effects. Ride and Handling: Precision, Agility, and Pure Fun What truly sets the 296 GTB apart is the astonishing responsiveness of its chassis. Ferrari’s assertion that the car’s primary objective was to be ‘fun to drive’ is not mere marketing hyperbole; it is a tangible reality. The vehicle exhibits remarkable agility without ever feeling overtly nervous. The steering, typically light and exceptionally quick, also imparts a surprising level of feedback, connecting the driver intimately with the road. While the grip levels are predictably immense, the car’s true genius lies in its throttle adjustability, encouraging playful engagement and eliciting genuine grins. Despite its dry weight of 1470kg, the 296 GTB feels significantly lighter. There’s an inherent lack of inertia that encourages a more collaborative driving style, rewarding precise, small inputs and allowing the driver to revel in its accuracy. The CT Off mode provides a comforting safety net, assuring the driver that an intelligent electronic guardian is still observing, yet even with all systems disengaged, the 296’s inherent balance allows for a level of manageable oversteer that one would scarcely believe possible in a car with 819bhp. On circuit, the 296 GTB possesses the remarkable ability to seemingly shorten even the longest straights. Its performance as a sharp, precise instrument becomes immediately apparent. The power is more than sufficient to break traction at the rear at numerous points around the lap, but the 296 is also acutely sensitive to braking and steering inputs. This fosters a learning process where precision with the controls yields the most significant rewards. The turn-in accuracy and response are phenomenal, dramatically compressing the entry phase of every corner. Rather than gradually easing the car into turns and building load, the 296 establishes its line instantaneously, its Multimatic dampers working in perfect harmony with the hyper-quick steering and the enhanced roll support of the Assetto Fiorano setup. Even for drivers transitioning from more conventional sports cars, the speed, precision, and sheer agility of the 296 GTB are simply phenomenal and a source of unadulterated joy lap after lap. Interior: A Digital Frontier
The cabin architecture will feel familiar to anyone who has experienced the SF90, as the 296 GTB borrows heavily from its larger sibling. The all-digital interface and its accompanying haptic switchgear present a significant learning curve. These controls are liberally applied across the steering wheel and on traditional Ferrari-esque pods flanking the steering column. While undeniably complex, it’s important to acknowledge the sheer volume of information and functions being conveyed. However, the most irksome aspect is the occasional need for a second press for simple operations that failed to register on the first attempt, or the uncertainty regarding whether a press has been successfully registered at all. Despite these ergonomic challenges, the cabin unequivocally feels like a special place to be. Verdict: A Return to Prancing Horse Purity In the fiercely competitive supercar arena, the 296 GTB has carved out a unique and highly desirable niche. The concern with heavily technology-laden vehicles is the risk of becoming less than the sum of their parts. This was a sentiment echoed with the SF90, which, while dazzling with its power, could sometimes feel unnerving with its less intuitive driving characteristics. However, the 296 GTB is a different entity entirely. Its performance at the 2022 evo Car of the Year awards, where it achieved a joint third place alongside the McLaren Artura, underscored its exceptional balance. It feels remarkably organic, striking a perfect chord between immense power and deeply engaging dynamics, effectively redefining the expectations of a sub-$300,000 supercar. Rumors of a forthcoming Versione Speciale variant, promising even greater power, performance, and intensity, are circulating, and the hope is that the standard 296’s remarkably natural feel will be preserved. It is precisely this refined and intuitive driving character that we hope Lamborghini has prioritized in the development of its hybrid Temerario supercar. Over 900bhp is an almost obscene amount of power for a series-production supercar, capable of corrupting the entire driving experience if the rest of the vehicle isn’t meticulously engineered to harness it. If Lamborghini has indeed mastered this challenge – and their success with the Revuelto provides ample reason for optimism – then we are on the cusp of an epic twin test, potentially featuring over 1700bhp of hybrid hypercar might. Alternatively, the equation could expand to a mind-bending 2400bhp triple threat with the inclusion of the McLaren 750S. This now arguably the ‘minnow’ of the class, with a mere 740bhp. However, it brings a comparatively svelte 1389kg kerb weight to the table, resulting in a highly competitive power-to-weight ratio. The McLaren’s raw engagement, ergonomic perfection, razor-sharp steering, and exquisitely deft chassis offer a distinct counterpoint to the Ferrari’s comparatively more remote feel. Ferrari 296 GTB Specifications: Engine: V6, 2992cc, twin-turbocharged, augmented by electric motor Transmission: Eight-speed dual-clutch, with active E-diff Combined Power: 819bhp @ 8000rpm Combined Torque: 546lb ft @ 6250rpm Weight: 1470kg (dry) (566bhp/ton) 0-62mph: 2.9 seconds Top Speed: 205mph Price: Starting from approximately $320,000 USD
The 2025 Ferrari 296 GTB represents not just a leap forward, but a bold new direction for the supercar.
