Ferrari 296 GTB: The Electrifying Evolution Redefining Supercar Performance For over half a decade, I’ve been immersed in the world of automotive engineering, witnessing firsthand the relentless pace
of innovation. Among the most profound shifts I’ve observed is the audacious embrace of electrification within the supercar segment, a domain once fiercely guarded by the raw, unadulterated roar of internal combustion. Ferrari, a name synonymous with performance heritage, has unequivocally led this charge with the introduction of the 296 GTB. This isn’t merely a car; it’s a paradigm shift, a meticulously crafted masterpiece that challenges the very definition of a modern supercar. As a seasoned observer of this industry, the 296 GTB stands as a pivotal moment, a benchmark against which all future high-performance hybrid machines will be measured. The genesis of the 296 GTB, appearing in 2022, marked a significant departure from Ferrari’s established formula. Gone was the revered, multi-award-winning twin-turbo V8, replaced by an entirely novel twin-turbocharged V6 augmented by an electric heart. This bold move positioned the 296 GTB at the vanguard of a segment still cautiously navigating the transition to electrified powertrains. Its arrival sent ripples through the automotive elite, particularly as rivals began to tease their own electrified challengers. Historically, the 296 GTB’s direct competitor was the Lamborghini Huracán, a symphony of naturally aspirated V10 prowess. While lacking the sheer output of the Ferrari, the Huracán offered an intoxicating blend of V10 charisma and raw auditory drama, a truly captivating experience in its prime. The McLaren 720S, with its formidable twin-turbo V8, also presented a compelling alternative, focusing on a supreme power-to-weight ratio. However, the landscape has dramatically evolved. The McLaren 750S, an evolution of its predecessor, continues this philosophy. But the real challenger, the one that truly throws down the gauntlet to Maranello’s electrified marvel, is the much-anticipated Lamborghini Temerario. With a staggering 903 horsepower, a 10,000rpm redline, and a twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain, the Temerario represents Lamborghini’s direct riposte to the 819 horsepower hybridised Berlinetta from Ferrari. The sheer potency of the 296 GTB is undeniable. Its all-new, 120-degree, twin-turbo V6 engine, seamlessly integrated with an electric motor, drives only the rear wheels – a distinct difference from the all-wheel-drive setup of the SF90 Stradale. This potent combination produces a headline-grabbing 819 horsepower, a figure that undeniably shatters conventional supercar expectations. It’s a number that sparks awe, prompting contemplation on the ultimate limits of automotive performance and the practical application of such immense capability. What further elevates the 296 GTB is its pioneering status. It marks the first V6-powered road car to proudly wear the Prancing Horse emblem (a nod to the historical significance of the Dino 246 GT, which, though beloved, never bore the official Ferrari badge in its era). It also pioneers Ferrari’s ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger configuration, where the turbochargers are mounted within the V of the engine for enhanced efficiency and responsiveness. As a plug-in hybrid, it offers a tantalizing electric-only range of approximately 15 miles, a testament to its dual-purpose nature. This compact V6 is nestled low within a newly developed aluminum chassis, featuring a wheelbase reduced by 50mm compared to its V8 predecessors, with occupants positioned slightly further forward to optimize weight distribution and driving dynamics. The electric motor contributes a substantial 165 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque, while the V6 engine alone churns out an astonishing 654 horsepower and 546 lb-ft of torque. Ferrari, in its characteristic precision, refrains from quoting a combined peak torque figure, likely due to the intricate interplay between the electric motor and the V6. However, it’s safe to assume the combined torque output is nothing short of formidable. The V6 unit itself is approximately 30kg lighter than a comparable Ferrari V8, mated to an incredibly slick eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The battery pack, a long, slender structure, is discreetly housed behind the seats, ingeniously contributing to the car’s balanced weight distribution. No Ferrari would be complete without an arsenal of acronym-laden electronic chassis control systems, and the 296 GTB is no exception. Ferrari’s engineers have developed a cutting-edge six-axis sensor, dubbed the 6w-CDS (six-way Chassis Dynamic Sensor). This sophisticated unit meticulously measures acceleration and rotational speed across the X, Y, and Z planes. By replacing traditional yaw sensors and integrating with a sensor on the steering rack, the system gains an unprecedented understanding of driver input and real-time grip levels at the tire contact patch. This data is then used to optimize systems like Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, maximizing cornering speeds while preserving unwavering stability and driver confidence. Furthermore, the 6w-CDS enables the innovative ABS-evo system, active in RACE mode and above. This advanced braking system, leveraging the 296’s brake-by-wire technology, not only shortens braking distances but also dramatically enhances braking performance during trail braking into corners, a crucial technique for maximizing lap times.
For the first time, Ferrari is deploying its active aerodynamics not merely to reduce drag, but to actively generate downforce. The manufacturer quotes an impressive 360kg of downforce at 155mph, with a significant portion, up to 100kg, attributed to the actively deploying rear wing. The thermal management of this high-performance machine is equally impressive. Two radiators in the front manage engine and gearbox cooling, supplemented by two additional condensers dedicated to cooling the battery pack. Hot air is expelled discreetly underneath the car, ensuring it doesn’t disrupt the airflow directed towards the intercoolers located along the car’s flanks. The subtly integrated apertures below the headlamps are dedicated to cooling the brakes, while a wing cleverly integrated into the roofline creates a ‘virtual’ rear screen, effectively guiding air towards the rear of the car as if flowing over a physical surface. The majority of the 296’s downforce is generated from beneath the car, where meticulous attention has been paid not only to the design of the underbody and rear diffuser but also to the precise ground clearance, thereby maximizing the effectiveness of these downforce-generating surfaces. The pre-production 296 GTBs I experienced on track during the launch were all equipped with the optional Assetto Fiorano package. This enhancement replaces the standard dampers with race-derived Multimatic units, akin to those found in GT racing, and adds further carbon aerodynamic elements to the front splitter, increasing front downforce by an additional 20kg. The Assetto Fiorano package also incorporates more carbon fiber throughout the cabin, including door panels, and on the exterior, contributing to an overall weight saving of 12kg. This saving can be further extended to 15kg by opting for the lightweight Lexan rear engine cover. For those seeking ultimate track performance, the Fiorano package also offers Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires as an upgrade over the standard Pilot Sport 4S. Visually, Fiorano-equipped cars can be further personalized with an exterior graphics package, inspired by the iconic 250LM of the 1960s. Having had the opportunity to scrutinize the 296 GTB extensively, I can attest to its striking aesthetic. It’s a visually arresting machine, possessing a distinctiveness that sets it apart from anything else on the road. Even without the optional graphics, its design subtly evokes the spirit of the legendary 250LM, a beautiful homage to Ferrari’s illustrious past. Performance and Driving Dynamics: A New Era of Electrifying Velocity Engaging the 296 GTB is an experience in itself. A double press on the lower section of the steering wheel boss and a select first gear is all it takes to awaken this V6 hybrid marvel. The car defaults to Hybrid mode, allowing for silent, emission-free departure on electric power alone, unless explicitly overridden by the driver. Gentle throttle application ensures the car remains in EV mode, provided sufficient battery charge. The driver has the option to forcefully engage EV mode, irrespective of powertrain demands, or select from Performance and Qualifying modes. In both these dynamic settings, the electric motor and V6 engine operate in concert. Performance mode prioritizes exhilarating acceleration while simultaneously ensuring the battery is replenished, whereas Qualifying mode unleashes the absolute maximum performance, with no regard for the battery’s state of charge. The ability to glide through urban landscapes in near silence is an unexpectedly delightful experience. The sophisticated damping system contributes to a surprisingly comfortable ride, making it an exceptionally refined grand tourer for covering significant distances. Furthermore, the ‘frunk’ offers a reasonably sized luggage compartment, a welcome practicality absent in the SF90 Stradale. However, the true question on every enthusiast’s mind is: what does it feel like when both power sources are unleashed in earnest? The answer lies in the instantaneous surge of acceleration that greets you when you plant the throttle at low revs in a high gear. The 296 GTB simply launches forward, eradicating any hint of turbo lag and making one question the very necessity of gear changes, such is its immediate potency. Yet, with eight gears at its disposal and an engine that happily revs to 8500rpm, the experience when the V6 is truly uncorked is nothing short of astonishing. The acceleration figures – a brisk 0-62mph sprint and an impressive top speed – translate into a visceral sensation of relentless propulsion, a thrilling, almost unnerving surge that elicits nervous laughter but is undeniably addictive. This is a car that redefines rapid; its soundtrack, a melodic V6 rasp overlaid with the evocative symphony of turbochargers, adds another layer to its captivating performance. The responsiveness of the 296 GTB’s chassis is profoundly impressive. Ferrari’s declaration that the car’s primary objective was to be ‘fun to drive’ is not hyperbole. It feels exceptionally agile without ever becoming overtly nervous. The steering is typically light and direct, yet it conveys a remarkable level of road feel. While grip levels are predictably immense, the car’s true genius lies in its throttle adjustability, allowing for a playful, grin-inducing driving experience. Despite its dry weight of 1470kg, the 296 GTB feels considerably lighter. There’s a remarkable lack of inertia, encouraging the driver to work with the car, making subtle inputs and reveling in its precision. Engaging CT Off mode provides a reassuring safety net, allowing for adventurous maneuvers with the confidence of an advanced electronic guardian. However, even with all electronic aids disengaged, the inherent balance of the 296 GTB allows for playful oversteer, a feat one might not expect from a car producing 819 horsepower. On the racetrack, the 296 GTB possesses the uncanny ability to make even lengthy straights feel shorter. Its precision as a driving instrument becomes acutely apparent. While the power is readily available to break rear-wheel traction at numerous points around the circuit, the 296 GTB is also exquisitely sensitive to braking and steering inputs. It quickly becomes clear that precision with the controls yields the greatest rewards. The turn-in accuracy and responsiveness are phenomenal, dramatically shortening the entry phase of every corner. Instead of gently guiding the car into turns and allowing loads to build progressively, the 296 GTB settles instantly, its Multimatic dampers and hyper-quick steering perfectly complementing the enhanced body control offered by the Assetto Fiorano setup. Even for drivers transitioning from more conventional sports cars, the sheer speed, precision, and agility of the 296 GTB are simply phenomenal, offering an exhilarating and rewarding experience lap after lap. Interior Design: A Blend of Familiarity and Future Tech The cabin architecture of the 296 GTB will feel immediately familiar to anyone who has experienced the SF90 Stradale, as it borrows heavily from its larger sibling. The entirely digital interface, coupled with its touch-sensitive haptic switchgear scattered across the steering wheel and traditional Ferrari pods, presents a learning curve. While it’s undoubtedly complex, it’s also a necessary consequence of conveying a vast amount of information. The most frustrating aspect is when simple operations require a second, sometimes third, attempt to register, or when it’s unclear if an input has been successfully received. Despite these occasional usability challenges, the cabin undeniably feels like a special place to be. Expert Verdict: A Triumph of Hybrid Integration During the esteemed evo Car of the Year 2022 awards, the competition was exceptionally fierce, with the McLaren Artura and the 296 GTB being separated by the narrowest of margins. The judging panel was almost perfectly divided, with three testers narrowly favoring the Ferrari and three championing the McLaren. For those who placed the 296 GTB ahead, the sentiments were overwhelmingly positive. “What a spectacular car,” enthused one tester, “Beautiful to look at, outrageously fast, amazingly exploitable, and so technically clever. Its V6 shows McLaren how to downsize but turn up the drama, and it matches the Artura in terms of sheer control but feels a bit more playful and indulgent.” Another remarked, “The first genuinely beautiful Ferrari since the F355,” a sentiment echoed by many. “The hybrid system works exceptionally well and doesn’t change the driving experience as much as I’d feared, likely because we’ve already become accustomed to the torquey characteristics of the turbocharged V8 in the 488 and F8. The 296 is stonkingly quick but doesn’t rely solely on speed thanks to the character of the V6, which has a soundtrack that’s always sweet and changes with throttle opening.”
The seamless integration of the Ferrari’s hybrid system was widely praised. However, a minor hiccup occurred on the final night of testing when the battery depleted, leaving the car stranded without an obvious means of recovery. While Ferrari had provided guidance on preventing such scenarios, it’s not inconceivable that an owner might find themselves in a similar predicament. “The fact that the company which introduced individual rear-wheel steering to its cars can’t engineer a simple fail-safe to prevent this happening is a huge oversight,” commented one judge. Fortunately, this incident occurred after all cars had been scored. While Ferrari’s signature super-quick steering divided opinions, and the brake feel didn’t quite match the very best in the group, the tech interface also faced criticism for its complexity. Nevertheless, the 296 GTB proved irresistibly seductive. “I thought I wouldn’t like the Fezza all that much – too complex, rather gratuitous points of difference,” admitted one judge, “but I ended up somewhat bewitched: the spooky way it changes direction; its amazing damping and looney-tunes levels of grip; the linearity of seemingly never-ending power…” A notable observation was that the 296 GTB represented a significant return to form for Ferrari, especially in contrast to the SF90 Stradale, which left some testers feeling somewhat underwhelmed. As one expert put it, “The 296 is way more successful because its technical sophistication, and the integration of its hybrid technology in particular, feels much more natural, and far less intrusive.” Another agreed, “Ferrari has taken so much from the SF90, learnt from that car and distilled it into a series production model that’s one of its very best.” Price, Rivals, and the Future Landscape When a car is so densely packed with cutting-edge technology, there’s always a risk that it might become less than the sum of its parts. This was a concern we encountered with the SF90, which, while dazzling with its power, proved somewhat unnerving in its driving characteristics. However, the 296 GTB is a fundamentally different proposition. Its organic feel and its perfectly balanced blend of immense power and engaging dynamics strike a remarkable sweet spot, effectively redefining what a supercar in the £250,000 price bracket can achieve. A more potent Versione Speciale variant is anticipated, promising even greater performance and intensity, and the hope is that the standard 296’s incredibly natural feel will be retained. It is precisely this aspect of the 296 GTB’s inherent character that I keenly hope Lamborghini has prioritized in the development of its hybrid Temerario supercar. Over 900 horsepower is an obscene amount of power to be harnessed in a series production supercar, and it has the potential to overwhelm if the supporting chassis and dynamics are not meticulously resolved. If Lamborghini has indeed mastered this complex equation – and the sheer brilliance of the Revuelto offers strong grounds for optimism – then we are poised for an epic twin test of titanic proportions, pitting two behemoths of the electrified supercar world against each other. Alternatively, we could expand this to a colossal 2400bhp triple threat by including the McLaren 750S. While now absurdly described as the ‘minnow’ of the group with a mere 740 horsepower, it counters with a remarkably petite 1389kg kerb weight, thus delivering a highly competitive power-to-weight ratio. The McLaren’s raw engagement, ergonomic perfection, crisp steering, and deft chassis control offer a distinctly different, perhaps more immediate, connection to the road compared to the comparatively more detached Ferrari.
