The Ferrari 296 GTB: Electrifying Excellence in the Hypercar Arena For a decade, the automotive landscape has been in a state of seismic transformation. As an industry veteran with ten years steeped i
n the exhilarating world of high-performance vehicles, I’ve witnessed firsthand the relentless evolution of automotive engineering, particularly within the rarefied stratum of supercars. Ferrari, a marque synonymous with passion and performance, has consistently pushed boundaries, and the Ferrari 296 GTB stands as a monumental testament to this unwavering commitment. This isn’t just a car; it’s a sophisticated symphony of cutting-edge technology and visceral driving pleasure, designed to redefine expectations and set new benchmarks for its contemporaries. The introduction of the 296 GTB in 2022 marked a profound departure for Ferrari’s mid-engined supercar lineage. Eschewing the celebrated twin-turbo V8 that had garnered numerous accolades, Maranello embraced a bold new path: a potent twin-turbo V6 engine, augmented by the seamless integration of electric power. This pioneering approach positioned the 296 GTB at the vanguard of a segment still in the throes of transitioning to hybrid propulsion, an initiative that has truly solidified its place among the best hybrid supercars. In its initial years, the 296 GTB navigated a competitive field that included the Lamborghini Huracán, a champion of naturally aspirated V10 charisma and raw auditory drama, and the formidable McLaren 720S, a masterclass in twin-turbo V8 power and weight optimization. While the McLaren 750S represents an evolution of a proven formula, focusing on sheer power-to-weight supremacy, the impending arrival of the 903bhp, 10,000rpm Lamborghini Temerario – a hybrid marvel – signals a direct and formidable challenge to Ferrari’s electrified berlinetta. The Ferrari 296 GTB performance is not merely impressive; it’s a paradigm shift. The sheer output of the 296 GTB is undeniably staggering. Boasting an all-new, 120-degree, twin-turbo V6 engine expertly fused with an electric motor, delivering its prodigious power exclusively to the rear wheels (a distinct departure from the four-wheel-drive SF90), the 819bhp 296 GTB unequivocally shattered established supercar conventions. This level of Ferrari 296 GTB horsepower is what truly sets it apart. It’s easy to become fixated on such awe-inspiring power figures and ponder the eventual limits of this performance escalation – a question that seems particularly relevant in light of the rumored specifications of the Lamborghini Temerario. More critically, however, is the contemplation of where such exhilarating performance can be fully unleashed in the real world. This, of course, leads to deeper discussions about track days and specialized driving experiences. What truly distinguishes the 296 GTB is its historical significance. It marks the debut of a V6-powered road car from Ferrari, a lineage that, while omitting the iconic Prancing Horse emblem in its time, can trace its roots to the delectable 246 GT Dino. Furthermore, it pioneers Ferrari’s ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger installation and embraces plug-in hybrid technology, offering an impressive EV-only range of approximately 15 miles. This compact V6, mounted low within a meticulously engineered new aluminum chassis, features a wheelbase reduced by 50mm compared to its V8 predecessors, with occupants positioned slightly further forward for a more engaging driving posture. The electric motor alone contributes a remarkable 165bhp and 232 lb-ft of torque. When combined with the V6’s own formidable 654bhp and 546 lb-ft, the system achieves the headline figure of 819bhp. Ferrari prudently refrains from quoting a combined peak torque figure, likely due to the intricate interplay between the engine and electric motor. However, it’s safe to surmise that this combined torque is nothing short of immense, contributing significantly to the Ferrari 296 GTB torque. This advanced powertrain configuration also results in a weight saving of 30kg over Ferrari’s V8 engines. The powertrain is seamlessly managed by an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, with the compact battery pack – a long, oblong structure – strategically located behind the seats. No Ferrari would be complete without a sophisticated suite of electronic chassis control systems. For the 296 GTB, Ferrari has developed the groundbreaking six-axis sensor, the 6w-CDS, capable of precisely measuring acceleration and rotational speed across the X, Y, and Z planes. This innovative sensor supersedes conventional yaw sensors. In conjunction with a sensor integrated into the steering rack, it provides the vehicle with an unparalleled understanding of driver inputs and real-time grip levels at the tire contact patch. This data empowers other systems, such as Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, to optimize cornering speeds while meticulously preserving stability and driver confidence. A notable advancement is the introduction of ABS-evo in RACE mode and above, which, leveraging the 296’s brake-by-wire system, not only shortens braking distances but also enhances braking performance during trail braking into corners.
For the first time in its history, Ferrari is employing its active aerodynamics not for drag reduction, but for generating substantial downforce. The manufacturer quotes a figure of 360kg at 155mph, with an impressive 100kg of this being attributed to the deployable rear wing. This is a significant engineering feat for a new Ferrari supercar. The thermal management system is equally advanced. Two radiators in the front address engine and gearbox cooling, complemented by two additional condensers dedicated to cooling the battery. Hot air is strategically expelled underneath the car, ensuring it doesn’t impede the flow of cooling air directed towards the intercoolers situated along the flanks. The subtle apertures beneath the headlamps are designed to draw in air for brake cooling. The aerodynamically integrated wing at the rear of the roofline ingeniously creates a ‘virtual’ rear screen, effectively channeling air towards the car’s rear as if guided by a surface. The majority of the 296’s downforce is sculpted from beneath the car. Here, meticulous attention has been paid not only to air channelling and the rear diffuser but also to optimizing the underbody’s ground clearance to amplify the effectiveness of its downforce-generating surfaces. The limited-production 296 GTB models experienced on circuit during the launch were all equipped with the optional Assetto Fiorano package. This enhancement replaces the standard dampers with advanced Multimatic units, directly derived from GT racing technology. It also introduces additional carbon aerodynamic elements to the front, increasing front downforce by a further 20kg. The package further incorporates more carbon fiber within the cabin, such as the door panels, and on the exterior, contributing to an overall weight saving of 12kg. This saving can be extended to 15kg if the optional Lexan rear engine cover is specified. For enthusiasts seeking the ultimate track-focused experience, the Assetto Fiorano package also permits the selection of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, a significant upgrade from the standard Pilot Sport 4S. Aesthetic enhancements include an optional exterior graphics package, artfully inspired by the iconic 250LM of the 1960s, making the Ferrari 296 GTB design truly timeless. Having had the opportunity to intimately experience the 296 GTB, its visual appeal is undeniable. It possesses a striking individuality, a captivating aesthetic that draws inspiration from the legendary 250LM, even without the more overt graphics package. The Ferrari 296 GTB price reflects its exclusive nature, positioning it firmly in the ultra-luxury segment. To initiate movement, a simple double-press on the lower section of the steering wheel boss, followed by selecting first gear, brings the 296 GTB to life. The car defaults to Hybrid mode, enabling it to pull away solely on electric power unless directed otherwise via the intuitive haptic driver mode selections on the left side of the steering wheel. As long as throttle inputs remain measured, the vehicle will continue its silent progress on electric power, contingent on battery charge. Owners can also actively select ‘eDrive’ mode, irrespective of powertrain demands, or choose between Performance and Qualifying modes. In these modes, both the internal combustion engine and electric motor operate in tandem. Performance mode prioritizes driveability while also managing battery regeneration, whereas Qualifying mode unleashes the full, unadulterated potential of the powertrain, irrespective of the battery’s state of charge. This dynamic driving experience, coupled with the Ferrari 296 GTB top speed, makes for an unforgettable journey. The experience of gliding silently through picturesque villages is an unexpected yet delightful pleasure. The damping calibration is so sophisticated that it transforms the 296 GTB into a remarkably comfortable cruiser, capable of consuming vast distances with ease. Even the luggage capacity in the ‘frunk’ is surprisingly practical, a welcome contrast to the SF90. However, the question that truly ignites the imagination is: what does it feel like when both the V6 engine and the electric motor are unleashed with full ferocity? The answer becomes strikingly apparent when one plants the throttle at low revs in a higher gear. The 296 GTB surges forward with an immediate, lag-free response, prompting a momentary reevaluation of the necessity of gear changes, such is its sheer potency. Yet, with eight gears at its disposal and an engine that eagerly spins to 8500rpm, the experience of fully unleashing the 296 GTB is nothing short of astonishing. As the performance figures suggest – a blistering 0-62mph in a mere 2.9 seconds and a top speed exceeding 205mph – the rate of acceleration is intensely exhilarating, bordering on overwhelming, yet strangely addictive. This is a seriously rapid machine. The auditory experience is equally captivating, with a harmonious blend of turbocharger effects overlaying the tuneful V6 rasp, a truly distinctive Ferrari 296 GTB sound. The responsiveness of the 296 GTB’s chassis is profoundly impressive. Ferrari’s claim of making this car “fun to drive” is not an idle boast. It exhibits remarkable agility without ever feeling nervous or unpredictable. The steering, typically Ferrari-light and rapid, also delivers exceptional tactile feedback. While grip levels are predictably immense, the car remains delightfully throttle-adjustable, eliciting an irrepressible grin from the driver. Despite its dry weight of 1470kg, the 296 GTB feels significantly lighter. There’s a remarkable lack of inertia throughout the entire vehicle, encouraging the driver to work with it, employing small, precise inputs and reveling in its accuracy and precision. Engaging ‘CT Off’ mode allows for audacious maneuvers, providing the reassurance of an intelligent electronic guardian overseeing your every move. Even with all electronic aids deactivated, the inherent balance of the 296 GTB allows for delightful moments of controlled oversteer, a feat one might deem impossible in a car with 819bhp. On the track, the 296 GTB has the remarkable ability to seemingly shrink even the longest straights. What becomes even more apparent is its precision as a driving instrument. While the power is certainly capable of breaking traction at the rear at numerous points around the circuit, the 296 GTB is also exquisitely sensitive to braking and steering inputs. It quickly becomes evident that precise control of the vehicle yields the greatest rewards. The incredible turn-in accuracy and responsiveness dramatically shorten the entry phase of every corner. Rather than easing the car into turns and allowing load to build gradually, the 296 GTB adopts its line instantaneously, facilitated by its Multimatic dampers. The hyper-quick steering perfectly complements the enhanced roll support provided by the Assetto Fiorano setup. Even for those accustomed to more conventional sports cars, the speed, precision, and agility of the 296 GTB are phenomenal, offering a joyous experience lap after lap. The interior architecture will feel familiar to anyone who has experienced the SF90, as the 296 GTB draws heavily from its larger sibling. The entirely digital interface, coupled with its complimentary haptic switchgear, presents a learning curve. These controls are liberally applied to the steering wheel and traditional Ferrari pods flanking it. While undoubtedly complex, it’s important to acknowledge the sheer volume of information that needs to be conveyed. The primary frustration arises when simple operations occasionally require a second press to register, or when there’s ambiguity about whether a press has been successfully acknowledged. Nevertheless, the cabin exudes an undeniable sense of occasion, making it a truly special place to be. evo Car of the Year 2022 Verdict: “Now things get serious. When the scores were tallied, there was barely a hair’s breadth between the McLaren Artura and the 296 GTB. The judges were perfectly split: three of us narrowly preferred the Ferrari; three scored the McLaren ahead by a whisker. The three who favored the 296 were myself, Meaden, and Bovingdon. ‘What a spectacular car,’ enthused Jethro. ‘Beautiful to look at, outrageously fast, amazingly exploitable, and so technically clever. Its V6 shows McLaren how to downsize but amplify the drama, and it matches the Artura in terms of sheer control but feels a bit more playful and indulgent.’
‘The first genuinely beautiful Ferrari since the F355,’ was Dickie’s verdict, a sentiment echoed by many of us. ‘The hybrid system works exceptionally well,’ he continued, ‘and doesn’t alter the driving experience as much as I’d feared. Probably because we’ve already become accustomed to the torquey characteristics of the turbocharged V8 in the 488 and F8. The 296 is stonkingly quick but doesn’t rely solely on speed, thanks to the character of the V6, which offers a soundtrack that’s always sweet and evolves with throttle opening.’ ‘The Ferrari’s hybridisation was widely praised for its seamless integration, although on the final night, we were left stranded after the battery depleted with no apparent means of bringing the car back to life. To be fair, Ferrari had warned us of this possibility and detailed the various measures to prevent it. However, it’s not inconceivable that an owner could find themselves in a similar predicament. As Gallagher observed, ‘the fact that the company that pioneered individual rear-wheel steering can’t engineer a simple fail-safe to prevent this is a massive oversight.’ Fortunately for the 296, this incident occurred after all cars had been scored. ‘Ferrari’s signature hyper-quick steering divided opinion, the brake feel didn’t quite match the very best in the group, and the tech interface was widely criticized for being overly complex. Nevertheless, the 296 was irresistibly seductive. ‘I initially thought I wouldn’t like the Fezza that much – too complicated, rather gratuitous points of difference,’ said Vivian, ‘but I ended up somewhat bewitched: its uncanny ability to change direction; its amazing damping and looney-tune levels of grip; the linearity of its seemingly endless power…’ ‘It represents a true return to form for Ferrari, after the SF90 left us feeling somewhat cold last year. As Sutcliffe commented: ‘The 296 is far more successful because its technical sophistication, and the integration of its hybrid technology in particular, feels much more natural and far less intrusive.’ Gallagher concurred: ‘Ferrari has taken so much from the SF90, learned from that car, and distilled it into a series-production model that ranks among its very best.’ – Peter Tomalin, ecoty 2022. When a vehicle is this heavily laden with technology, there’s always the inherent risk that it might become less than the sum of its parts. This was an observation evo made with the SF90, which, while dazzling with its power output, proved somewhat unnerving with its challenging driving characteristics. However, the 296 GTB is a different proposition entirely. As our experience at eCoty 2022 (where it secured a joint third place alongside the McLaren Artura) demonstrated, it feels far more organic. Its harmonious blend of power and engaging dynamics strikes a perfect sweet spot, effectively redefining what a £250,000-ish supercar can achieve. A Versione Speciale variant of the 296 is anticipated this year, promising even greater power, performance, and intensity. The hope remains that the standard 296’s inexplicably natural driving feel will be preserved. It is precisely this aspect of the 296 GTB’s character that we fervently hope Lamborghini has meticulously addressed when refining its hybrid Temerario supercar. Over 900bhp is an almost obscene amount of power to wield in a series-production supercar, and it can undoubtedly compromise the driving experience if the rest of the vehicle isn’t perfectly resolved to meet it. If Lamborghini has succeeded – and the sheer brilliance of the Revuelto provides ample reason for optimism – then we are poised for an absolutely epic twin test, a confrontation of hypercars boasting a combined 1700bhp. Alternatively, we could elevate the stakes to a 2400bhp triple-threat, including the McLaren 750S, which must now be absurdly described as the minnow of this particular class, with a mere 740bhp. Yet, as noted, it brings a relatively petite kerb weight of 1389kg to the table, thus achieving a highly competitive power-to-weight ratio. The McLaren’s inherent rawness, ergonomic perfection, the crispness of its steering, and the sheer deftness of its chassis do distinguish it against the comparatively more remote feel of the Ferrari. This rivalry, encompassing supercar performance comparisons, is what truly electrifies the automotive enthusiast.
