Ferrari 296 GTB 2025: A Hybrid Masterpiece Challenging Automotive Ascendancy For a decade, the automotive landscape has been my laboratory. I’ve witnessed revolutions unfold, technologies mature, and
the very definition of performance recalibrate. Among the most profound shifts has been the embrace of electrification, particularly within the hallowed halls of supercar manufacturing. Ferrari, a name synonymous with visceral emotion and breathtaking speed, has navigated this paradigm with audacious innovation. The Ferrari 296 GTB, a vehicle I’ve had the privilege of dissecting and appreciating, stands as a testament to this evolution, even as formidable rivals like the anticipated Lamborghini Temerario loom on the horizon. The introduction of the 296 GTB in 2022 marked a significant departure from Ferrari’s established playbook. Forgoing the acclaimed twin-turbo V8 that had powered its predecessors, Maranello opted for a sophisticated new twin-turbocharged V6, seamlessly augmented by an electric powertrain. This bold move positioned the 296 GTB at the vanguard of a supercar segment still in the nascent stages of electrification. While its debut rivals, like the naturally aspirated V10-powered Lamborghini Huracán and the ferocious twin-turbo V8 McLaren 720S, offered their own distinct flavors of performance, the 296 GTB presented a different, electrifying proposition. The McLaren 750S, a refinement of its predecessor, continued to champion power-to-weight supremacy. However, the impending 903bhp, 10,000rpm hybrid V8 Temerario from Lamborghini represents a direct and potent challenge to the 819bhp hybrid Berlinetta from Ferrari. The Ferrari 296 GTB hybrid supercar is not merely a car; it’s a declaration of intent. The sheer output of the 296 GTB is, frankly, mind-bending. Its all-new, 120-degree, twin-turbo V6, paired with an electric motor, drives solely the rear wheels – a notable distinction from the four-wheel-drive SF90. This synergy delivers a staggering 819 horsepower, a figure that continues to redefine the boundaries of what a road-legal supercar can achieve. The conversation inevitably turns to the limits of this escalating power and the practical application of such velocity. Yet, these are questions for another time; the immediate impact is undeniable. This remarkable machine holds several distinctions. It is the first V6-powered road-legal Ferrari, a lineage that consciously excludes the revered 246 GT Dino, which never bore the Prancing Horse emblem during its production. Furthermore, it pioneers Ferrari’s ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger configuration and incorporates plug-in hybrid technology, offering an estimated 15-mile all-electric range. The compact V6 is nestled low within a newly engineered aluminum chassis, with a wheelbase reduced by 50mm compared to its V8 ancestors, subtly repositioning the occupants slightly further forward. The electric motor contributes an impressive 165 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque, while the V6 itself unleashes a formidable 654 horsepower and 546 lb-ft. Ferrari strategically refrains from quoting combined peak torque, likely due to the complex interplay between the combustion engine and electric motor, but it is safe to assume this figure is, to put it mildly, substantial. This V6 configuration, incidentally, shaves 30kg off the weight of Ferrari’s V8 engines and is mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The compact battery pack, a long, rectangular unit, resides discreetly behind the seats. No Ferrari would be complete without a sophisticated array of electronic chassis management systems. For the 296 GTB, Ferrari has developed the innovative six-axis sensor unit, the 6w-CDS (six-way Chassis Dynamic Sensor). This advanced system meticulously measures acceleration and rotational velocity across the X, Y, and Z axes, effectively replacing traditional yaw sensors. In conjunction with a sensor on the steering rack, it provides the car with an unparalleled understanding of both driver input and tire grip levels at the contact patch. This data is then utilized to optimize systems like Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, maximizing cornering speeds while ensuring unwavering stability. A standout feature enabled by this technology is the new ABS-evo system, operational in RACE mode and above. Leveraging the 296’s brake-by-wire setup, ABS-evo not only curtails braking distances but also enhances braking performance during trail-braking maneuvers into corners, a testament to the cutting-edge performance hybrid supercars on the market. For the first time, Ferrari has deployed its active aerodynamics not for drag reduction, but to generate significant downforce. The manufacturer claims an impressive 360kg of downforce at 155mph, with the deployable rear wing contributing up to 100kg of this figure. The cooling architecture is equally ingenious. Twin radiators at the front manage engine and gearbox temperatures, supplemented by two condensers dedicated to cooling the battery. Hot air is expelled from the underbody to avoid disrupting the airflow directed towards the intercoolers along the car’s flanks. Small apertures beneath the headlamps are dedicated to brake cooling, while a roofline-integrated spoiler channels air towards the rear of the car, creating a ‘virtual’ rear screen effect that enhances aerodynamic efficiency. The majority of the 296’s downforce is generated beneath the car, where meticulous attention has been paid to airflow management, the rear diffuser, and crucially, the underbody’s ground clearance to maximize the effectiveness of these downforce-generating surfaces. The pre-production 296 GTBs we sampled on track were all equipped with the optional Assetto Fiorano package. This upgrade replaces the standard dampers with Multimatic units derived from GT racing and adds further carbon fiber aerodynamic elements to the front splitter, increasing front downforce by an additional 20kg. The Assetto Fiorano specification also incorporates more carbon fiber in the cabin, such as the door panels, and on the exterior, contributing to a 12kg weight saving. This can be further enhanced by an optional Lexan rear engine cover, bringing the total reduction to 15kg. For those seeking ultimate grip, the Fiorano package offers the option of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, replacing the standard Pilot Sport 4S. Completing the track-focused aesthetic, Fiorano cars can also be specified with an exterior graphics package inspired by the iconic 250LM of the 1960s. This meticulous attention to detail underscores the 296 GTB’s commitment to being a true performance hybrid supercar. Having experienced the 296 GTB firsthand, its aesthetic appeal is undeniable. It possesses a unique visual identity, echoing the timeless elegance of the 250LM, even without the optional graphics. It’s a design that commands attention and admiration.
Performance Dynamics and Acceleration Prowess Initiating the drive is as simple as a double-press on the lower section of the steering wheel boss, followed by engaging first gear. The 296 GTB defaults to Hybrid mode, allowing for silent, purely electric propulsion unless provoked otherwise by the haptic driver mode selectors on the wheel. With judicious throttle application, it will maintain electric-only operation, provided the battery retains sufficient charge. A dedicated ‘e-drive’ mode can be selected, overriding powertrain demands, alongside Performance and Qualifying modes. In these latter two settings, both the V6 and electric motor operate in tandem. Performance mode balances power delivery with battery regeneration, while Qualifying mode prioritizes unadulterated, maximum performance, regardless of the battery’s state. The experience of gliding silently through urban landscapes is surprisingly serene, and the sophisticated damping ensures a remarkably comfortable ride, even over extended distances. The ‘frunk’ offers a respectable amount of luggage space, a welcome advantage over the SF90. However, the true magic, as we all keenly anticipate, lies in unleashing the full combined might of the V6 and electric motor. The immediate response when planting the throttle from low revs in a high gear is astonishing. The 296 surges forward with an absence of lag, prompting a momentary contemplation of the necessity of gears, such is its immediate potency. Yet, with eight gears to exploit and an engine that revs to a phenomenal 8,500rpm, the experience when fully unleashed is nothing short of electrifying. The acceleration figures – a sub-3-second 0-62mph dash and a top speed exceeding 205mph – paint a picture of relentless forward momentum, a sensation that borders on the exhilaratingly uncomfortable, yet is undeniably addictive. This is a seriously rapid automobile. And the soundtrack? It’s a symphony of turbocharger effects layered over the tuneful, rasping V6 note. The pursuit of supercar performance has reached new heights. Ride Characteristics and Handling Finesse What truly distinguishes the 296 GTB is the astonishing responsiveness of its chassis and Ferrari’s unwavering commitment to making this car an engaging driving instrument. It exhibits a high degree of agility without ever feeling nervous or unpredictable. The steering, a hallmark of Ferrari, is typically light and direct, yet it conveys an exceptional level of feedback. While grip levels are predictably immense, the car remains remarkably throttle-adjustable, eliciting an infectious grin with every nuance of driver input. Despite its 1470kg dry weight, the 296 feels significantly lighter. There’s a remarkable lack of inertia, encouraging an intuitive connection between driver and machine. Small, precise inputs yield immediate and rewarding responses. The CT Off mode allows for audacious exploration of its dynamic limits, providing a comforting safety net of sophisticated electronic intervention. Even with all electronic aids deactivated, the 296’s inherent balance allows for playful teasing into controlled oversteer, a feat one might not expect from a car producing 819 horsepower. This showcases the mastery of Ferrari V6 hybrid technology. On track, the 296 GTB possesses the uncanny ability to compress even the longest straights. Its precision as a surgical instrument becomes acutely apparent. While the power is readily available to break rear-end traction at numerous points on a circuit, the 296 is exquisitely sensitive to braking and steering inputs, rewarding precise control with heightened performance. The turn-in accuracy and responsiveness are phenomenal, dramatically shortening the entry phase of every corner. Instead of gently easing into turns, the 296 settles instantaneously, its Multimatic dampers and hyper-quick steering harmonizing beautifully with the enhanced roll support of the Assetto Fiorano setup. Even for drivers transitioning from more conventional sports cars, the speed, precision, and agility of the 296 are simply phenomenal, delivering an exhilarating experience lap after lap. Interior Ambiance and Digital Integration The cabin architecture will feel familiar to anyone who has experienced the SF90, as the 296 inherits much of its interior design language. The fully digital interface and its accompanying haptic switchgear, liberally applied to the steering wheel and surrounding pods, present a steep learning curve. While the complexity is understandable given the sheer volume of information and functions, the frustration lies in the sometimes-unresponsive nature of these touch-sensitive controls, requiring multiple attempts or leaving the driver uncertain if an input has been registered. Nevertheless, the overall ambiance remains undeniably special. evo Car of the Year 2022 Accolades The verdict from evo magazine’s esteemed road testers in 2022 highlights the intense competition and the 296 GTB’s exceptional standing: “Now it gets serious. When the scores were tallied, there wasn’t even the road tester’s legendary fag paper between the Artura and 296 GTB. The judges were perfectly split too: three of us narrowly preferred the Ferrari to the McLaren; three scored the Macca ahead by a whisker.” Jethro Bovingdon’s enthusiasm was palpable: “What a spectacular car. Beautiful to look at, outrageously fast, amazingly exploitable and so technically clever. Its V6 shows McLaren how to downsize but turn up the drama, and it matches the Artura in terms of sheer control but feels a bit more playful and indulgent.” Dickie Meaden offered a glowing appraisal: “The first genuinely beautiful Ferrari since the F355,” a sentiment echoed by many. “The hybrid system works very well, and doesn’t change the driving experience as much as I’d feared. Probably because we’ve already got used to the torquey characteristics of the turbocharged V8 in the 488 and F8. The 296 is stonkingly quick, but doesn’t rely solely on speed thanks to the character of the V6, which has a soundtrack that’s always sweet and changes with throttle opening.”
While the Ferrari’s hybridisation was widely praised for its seamless integration, a notable incident of the battery depleting, leaving the car stranded, cast a shadow. Ferrari had indeed cautioned about this possibility and provided guidance to mitigate it. However, as Gallagher observed, “that the company who introduced individual rear-wheel steering to its cars can’t engineer a simple fail-safe to prevent this happening is a huge oversight.” Fortunately, this occurred after the final scoring. Ferrari’s signature ultra-quick steering divided opinion, and the brake feel didn’t quite match the very best in the group. The tech interface also faced widespread criticism for its complexity. Yet, despite these drawbacks, the 296 remained “irresistibly seductive.” Vivian noted, “I thought I wouldn’t like the Fezza all that much – too complex, rather gratuitous points of difference – but I ended up somewhat bewitched: the spooky way it changes direction; its amazing damping and looney-tunes levels of grip; the linearity of seemingly never-ending power…” Peter Tomalin, reflecting on evo Car of the Year 2022, summarized: “It’s a real return to form for Ferrari, after the SF90 left us cold last year. As Sutcliffe said: ‘The 296 is way more successful because its technical sophistication, and the integration of its hybrid technology in particular, feels much more natural, and far less intrusive.’ And Gallagher agreed: ‘Ferrari has taken so much from the SF90, learnt from that car and distilled it into a series production model that’s one of its very best.’” The best hybrid supercars are often those that master integration. Pricing, Competitive Landscape, and Future Prospects The inherent risk with such technologically advanced vehicles is that they may become less than the sum of their parts. This was an observation made with the SF90, which, while dazzling in its power, proved somewhat unnerving in its driving characteristics. However, the 296 GTB is a different proposition entirely. Its success in the evo Car of the Year 2022 awards, where it secured joint third place alongside the McLaren Artura, underscores its organic feel. The seamless blend of power and engaging dynamics strikes a perfect chord, fundamentally redefining expectations for a supercar in the approximately $250,000 price bracket. Rumors of a ‘Versione Speciale’ variant, promising even more power and intensity, are circulating for this year. The hope is that this increased potency will not come at the expense of the standard 296’s remarkably natural driving feel. It is this aspect – the car’s inherent balance and connection with the driver – that I most hope Lamborghini has prioritized in the development of its hybrid Temerario. Over 900 horsepower is an astronomical figure for a series-production supercar, and it has the potential to overwhelm the chassis if not meticulously resolved. If Lamborghini has achieved the same level of dynamic brilliance evident in the Revuelto, then a twin test between the Ferrari 296 GTB and the Lamborghini Temerario, potentially boasting a combined 1700 horsepower, promises to be an automotive spectacle of epic proportions. Alternatively, one could envision a 2400 horsepower triple threat, including the McLaren 750S. In this context, the 740 horsepower McLaren might seem the relative underdog, but its comparatively svelte 1389kg kerb weight ensures a potent power-to-weight ratio. The McLaren’s raw character, ergonomic perfection, razor-sharp steering, and deft chassis balance offer a distinct contrast to the Ferrari’s more detached, albeit technologically advanced, experience. The debate over best hybrid sports cars is far from settled. Ferrari 296 GTB Key Specifications: Engine: 2992cc, twin-turbocharged V6, plus electric motor Transmission: Eight-speed, dual-clutch, active E-diff Combined Power: 819bhp @ 8000rpm Combined Torque: 546lb ft @ 6250rpm Dry Weight: 1470kg (566bhp/ton) 0-62mph: 2.9 seconds Top Speed: 205mph+ Approximate Price: £250,000+
