Ferrari 296 GTB 2025: A New Era of Supercar Prowess and the Lamborghini Temerario’s Looming Challenge As an industry veteran with a decade immersed in the exhilarating world of automotive engineering
and performance vehicles, I’ve witnessed firsthand the relentless evolution of the supercar segment. Few marques embody this relentless pursuit of excellence quite like Ferrari, and their 296 GTB stands as a compelling testament to this philosophy. Even with the specter of a 903bhp, 10,000rpm Lamborghini rival on the horizon, the 296 GTB continues to astound, proving that innovation and exhilarating performance are not mutually exclusive. For years, the mid-engined Ferrari formula remained a sacred, if evolving, constant. The arrival of the 296 GTB in 2022 marked an unprecedented pivot. Ferrari bravely bid farewell to its multi-award-winning twin-turbo V8, embracing a revolutionary twin-turbocharged V6 engine, seamlessly augmented by an electric motor. This bold hybridization strategy positioned the 296 GTB at the vanguard of a supercar landscape still tentatively navigating the transition to electrified powertrains. In its nascent stages, the 296 GTB found its most direct competitor in the Lamborghini Huracán, a bastion of naturally aspirated V10 symphony. While perhaps overshadowed in outright power figures, the Huracán’s raw acoustic charisma and visceral engagement of its naturally aspirated heart offered a unique appeal during its golden years. It also contended with the formidable McLaren 720S, a twin-turbo V8 titan that prioritized power-to-weight supremacy. While the subsequent McLaren 750S represents a refined iteration of that theme, the upcoming 903bhp, 10,000rpm twin-turbo V8 hybrid Lamborghini Temerario is unequivocally Sant’Agata Bolognese’s direct gauntlet thrown at Maranello’s 819bhp electrified Berlinetta.
Indeed, the 296 GTB packs a formidable punch. Featuring an entirely new 120-degree, twin-turbo V6 engine paired with an electric motor, exclusively driving the rear wheels (a departure from the all-wheel-drive SF90), the 819bhp 296 GTB fundamentally reshaped supercar conventions. The sheer magnitude of its power output is difficult to overlook, prompting contemplation on the ultimate limits of this escalating power race and, more practically, the scenarios in which such prodigious performance can be truly unleashed. But that, as they say, is a story for another time. The 296 GTB represents a significant milestone: it is the first V6-powered Ferrari road car (a lineage that, in spirit, evokes the charming 246 GT Dino, though that model never bore the Prancing Horse emblem in its era). It is also the first to feature a ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger arrangement and boasts plug-in hybrid capabilities, offering an estimated 15-mile all-electric range. This compact V6 unit is nestled low within a new aluminum chassis, its wheelbase judiciously reduced by 50mm compared to its V8 predecessors, with occupants positioned slightly further forward to optimize weight distribution and cabin packaging. The electric motor contributes an impressive 165bhp and 232lb ft of torque, while the V6 alone churns out a staggering 654bhp and 546lb ft. The combined headline figure stands at 819bhp. Ferrari, in its characteristic discretion, refrains from quoting a combined peak torque figure, likely due to the complex interplay between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor. Nevertheless, it’s safe to assume the resulting torque output is nothing short of immense. Crucially, this V6 setup shaves approximately 30kg from the weight of Ferrari’s V8 engines. It’s mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and the slim, rectangular battery pack resides discreetly behind the seats, a masterclass in packaging. No Ferrari would be complete without an arsenal of acronyms denoting its sophisticated electronic chassis control systems. For the 296, Ferrari has pioneered a revolutionary six-axis sensor, dubbed the 6w-CDS (Six-way Chassis Dynamic Sensor). This advanced system precisely measures acceleration and rotational velocity across the X, Y, and Z planes. Replacing conventional yaw sensors, and working in concert with a sensor integrated into the steering rack, it provides the car with an unparalleled understanding of driver inputs and real-time grip levels at the tire contact patches. This data empowers systems like the Side Slip Control and active E-Diff to maximize cornering speeds while steadfastly maintaining stability and occupant confidence. Furthermore, it enables the introduction of ABS-evo, a novel system active in RACE mode and above. Leveraging the 296’s brake-by-wire architecture, ABS-evo not only shortens braking distances but also significantly enhances braking performance during trail-braking maneuvers into corners, a testament to its sophisticated track day performance tuning. For the first time, Ferrari is deploying its active aerodynamics not to minimize drag, but to generate substantial downforce. The marque quotes a figure of 360kg at 155mph, with a remarkable 100kg of that attributed to the deployable rear wing, an active element seamlessly integrated into the car’s posterior. The thermal management strategy is equally impressive. Two radiators at the front manage engine and gearbox cooling, complemented by two additional condensers dedicated to battery thermal regulation. Hot air is strategically expelled underneath the vehicle, meticulously avoiding interference with the airflow directed to the intercoolers flanking the car. The discreet apertures below the headlamps are dedicated to brake cooling, while the aerodynamically sculpted roofline integrates a ‘virtual’ rear screen, effectively channeling air towards the rear of the vehicle as if guided by a physical surface. The majority of the 296’s downforce is meticulously sculpted beneath the car. Particular emphasis has been placed on optimizing airflow through the underbody and rear diffuser, with careful consideration given to the vehicle’s ground clearance to maximize the effectiveness of these downforce-generating surfaces. This level of aerodynamic refinement is critical for maintaining composure at extreme velocities, especially when considering performance car aerodynamics upgrades. The 296 GTBs we sampled on a closed circuit during their debut were all equipped with the optional Assetto Fiorano package. This performance-oriented upgrade swaps the standard dampers for racing-derived Multimatic units, reminiscent of those found in GT racing. It also incorporates additional carbon fiber aerodynamic elements on the front end, contributing an extra 20kg of downforce. Further weight savings are achieved through increased use of carbon fiber within the cabin, notably on the door panels, and on exterior components, collectively reducing the vehicle’s overall weight by 12kg. This figure can extend to 15kg if the optional Lexan rear engine cover is specified. A further enhancement for Assetto Fiorano equipped cars is the option of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, replacing the already capable standard Pilot Sport 4S. The Fiorano package also permits the selection of an exterior graphics package, a nostalgic nod to the iconic 250LM of the 1960s. This attention to detail extends to the car’s visual appeal; the 296 GTB, when experienced in person, is undeniably a visually stunning machine, possessing a unique aesthetic that subtly echoes the elegance of the 1960s 250LM, even without the more overt graphic treatments. For those seeking the ultimate expression of this design, Ferrari 296 GTB styling packages are a natural consideration. Initiating forward motion is an elegantly simple affair: a double-press of the lower section of the steering wheel boss, followed by selecting first gear. The 296 defaults to Hybrid mode, meaning it will depart silently on electric power alone, unless the driver consciously overrides this via the haptic driver mode selectors on the left side of the steering wheel. As long as throttle inputs remain measured, the car will continue its journey purely on electric power, provided sufficient battery charge is available. For those who desire it, a dedicated ‘e-drive’ mode can be engaged, overriding powertrain demands and prioritizing electric propulsion. Beyond this, the ‘Performance’ and ‘Qualifying’ modes orchestrate the combined efforts of both power sources. In Performance mode, the system aims to maintain battery charge while delivering potent acceleration, whereas Qualifying mode unleashes the full, unadulterated fury of both powertrains, with the battery’s state of charge becoming a secondary concern. The serene experience of gliding through picturesque villages on electric power is a surprisingly enjoyable revelation. The damping calibration is so refined that it transforms long-distance journeys into a remarkably comfortable affair. Furthermore, the ‘frunk’ up front offers a surprisingly practical luggage compartment, a welcome advantage over the SF90. However, the question on everyone’s mind, including mine, is the raw sensation of unleashing both the V6 engine and the electric motor in their full, unbridled glory. The clue lies in the car’s reaction to a deep throttle application in a high gear at low RPMs: the 296 surges forward with an absence of lag that momentarily makes you question the very necessity of gear selection, such is its immediate potency. Yet, with eight gears at its disposal and an engine that eagerly spins to 8,500rpm, the experience of truly uncorking the 296 is nothing short of breathtaking. The acceleration figures speak for themselves – a sub-3-second 0-62mph sprint and a top speed exceeding 205mph – delivering a visceral sensation of hold-on-tight exhilaration, bordering on the overwhelming, yet paradoxically, deeply addictive. This is a seriously rapid machine, and its auditory accompaniment is equally captivating, with a symphony of turbocharger whistle and the tuneful rasp of the V6 engine creating a truly immersive experience. For enthusiasts seeking to amplify this auditory drama, performance exhaust systems for Ferrari 296 GTB are a popular upgrade. What truly distinguishes the 296 GTB is the astonishing responsiveness of its chassis. Ferrari’s assertion that the car was engineered to be “fun to drive” is not mere marketing hyperbole. It feels remarkably agile, yet remarkably composed, eschewing any hint of nervousness. The steering, characteristically light and rapid, is imbued with an impressive level of tactile feedback, relaying crucial information about the road surface. While grip levels are predictably immense, the car’s inherent adjustability on the throttle inspires confidence and induces pure joy. It feels significantly lighter than its 1470kg dry weight suggests, exhibiting a remarkable lack of inertia that encourages driver engagement. Small, precise inputs are met with immediate and accurate responses, fostering a profound connection between driver and machine. The ‘CT Off’ mode provides a safety net of electronic intervention, allowing for daring exploits with the reassurance of an intelligent guardian. Even with all electronic aids deactivated, the 296’s innate balance allows for tantalizingly controlled drifts, a feat one might scarcely believe possible in a car with 819bhp. On track, the 296 possesses the uncanny ability to compress even the longest straights, revealing itself as an exceptionally sharp instrument. The abundant power is readily available to break traction at the rear tires at numerous points around the lap, but the 296 is also remarkably sensitive to braking and steering inputs. Precision in control is met with commensurate rewards. The turn-in accuracy and responsiveness are phenomenal, dramatically shortening the entry phase of every corner. Instead of gradually easing the car into turns and building load, the 296 adopts its line instantaneously, its Multimatic dampers and hyper-quick steering perfectly complementing the increased roll support offered by the Assetto Fiorano setup. Even for drivers accustomed to more conventional sports cars, the speed, precision, and agility of the 296 are simply phenomenal, providing an addictive thrill lap after lap. For those venturing onto the track, track day driving techniques for hybrid supercars are essential.
The cabin architecture will feel familiar to anyone who has experienced the SF90, as the 296 inherits a significant portion of its interior design. The fully digital interface, coupled with its array of haptic switchgear – liberally applied across the steering wheel and traditional Ferrari stalks flanking it – presents a steep learning curve. It is undeniably complex, tasked with conveying a vast amount of information. The primary frustration arises when simple operations occasionally require a second, or even third, attempt to register, or when the success of an input remains ambiguous. Despite these usability challenges, the cabin unequivocally exudes a sense of occasion and exclusivity. It is a truly special place to be. The pinnacle of automotive journalism, evo Magazine’s Car of the Year 2022 awards, provided a compelling endorsement of the 296 GTB’s brilliance. “Now it gets serious,” the verdict read. “When the scores were tallied, there wasn’t even the road tester’s legendary fag paper between the Artura and 296 GTB.” The judging panel was equally divided, with three narrowly favoring the Ferrari and three giving the McLaren a slight edge. The trio who championed the 296 – myself included, alongside Meaden and Bovingdon – were effusive in their praise. “What a spectacular car,” enthused Jethro. “Beautiful to look at, outrageously fast, amazingly exploitable, and so technically clever. Its V6 shows McLaren how to downsize but turn up the drama, and it matches the Artura in terms of sheer control but feels a bit more playful and indulgent.” Dickie’s assessment, echoed by many, declared it “The first genuinely beautiful Ferrari since the F355.” He continued, “The hybrid system works very well, and doesn’t change the driving experience as much as I’d feared. Probably because we’ve already got used to the torquey characteristics of the turbocharged V8 in the 488 and F8. The 296 is stonkingly quick, but doesn’t rely solely on speed thanks to the character of the V6, which has a soundtrack that’s always sweet and changes with throttle opening.” The seamless integration of the Ferrari’s hybridisation was widely lauded. However, a minor incident on the final night saw the car rendered immobile due to a depleted battery, with no obvious means of reactivation. Ferrari had, in fairness, forewarned of this possibility and provided guidance on preventative measures. Yet, it’s not inconceivable that an owner could encounter a similar predicament. As Gallagher pointed out, “that the company who introduced individual rear-wheel steering to its cars can’t engineer a simple fail-safe to prevent this happening is a huge oversight.” Fortunately for the 296, this occurred after all cars had been scored. Ferrari’s signature ultra-quick steering divided opinion, and the brake feel didn’t quite match the very best in the group. The technology interface also faced widespread criticism for its excessive complexity. Nevertheless, the 296 remained irresistibly seductive. “I thought I wouldn’t like the Fezza all that much – too complex, rather gratuitous points of difference,” admitted Vivian, “but I ended up somewhat bewitched: the spooky way it changes direction; its amazing damping and looney-tunes levels of grip; the linearity of seemingly never-ending power…” Reflecting on its place in the Ferrari lineage, Peter Tomalin, ecoty 2022 lead, summarized: “It’s a real return to form for Ferrari, after the SF90 left us cold last year. As Sutcliffe said: ‘The 296 is way more successful because its technical sophistication, and the integration of its hybrid technology in particular, feels much more natural, and far less intrusive.’ And Gallagher agreed: ‘Ferrari has taken so much from the SF90, learnt from that car and distilled it into a series production model that’s one of its very best.’” When a vehicle is so deeply imbued with advanced technology, there’s always a tangible risk that it might become less than the sum of its parts. This was a sentiment we encountered with the SF90, which, while dazzling in its power output, ultimately proved somewhat unnerving with its challenging driving characteristics. The 296 GTB, however, charts a decidedly different course. As evidenced by its joint third-place finish alongside the McLaren Artura at the 2022 evo Car of the Year awards, it possesses a far more organic feel. Its masterful blend of prodigious power and engaging dynamics strikes a sweet spot, effectively redefining the benchmark for a £250,000-ish supercar. A Versione Speciale variant of the 296 is anticipated this year, promising even greater power, performance, and intensity. The hope is that this heightened intensity will not compromise the standard 296’s remarkably natural and intuitive driving feel. It is precisely this intrinsic driving connection that we fervently hope Lamborghini has prioritized in its development of the hybrid Temerario supercar. An output exceeding 900bhp is an almost obscene amount of power for a series-production supercar, and it possesses the potential to overwhelm if the rest of the vehicle isn’t meticulously engineered to harness it. If Lamborghini has truly mastered this challenge – and their exceptional execution of the Revuelto provides ample reason for optimism – then we are poised for an absolutely monumental twin-test showdown. Alternatively, we could escalate the stakes to a staggering 2400bhp triple threat, incorporating the McLaren 750S. At 740bhp, it could be perceived as the minnow in this context, but it counters with a relatively petite 1389kg kerb weight, ensuring a fiercely competitive power-to-weight ratio. The McLaren’s raw character, ergonomic perfection, razor-sharp steering, and supremely deft chassis command respect, especially when contrasted with the comparatively more detached Ferrari. For those considering the cutting edge of new supercar releases, the 296 GTB remains a benchmark.
When contemplating the future of high-performance vehicles, the Ferrari 296 GTB price is undeniably a significant factor. However, the engineering prowess, the exhilarating performance, and the sheer emotional connection it offers place it in a rarefied category. If you’re seeking to experience the pinnacle of electrified supercar innovation and performance, the Ferrari 296 GTB represents an unparalleled opportunity to own a piece of automotive history. We invite you to explore authorized Ferrari dealerships to arrange a personal viewing and, perhaps, to embark on the driving experience that will redefine your perception of a supercar.
