The Prancing Horse Reimagined: Ferrari 296 GTB and the Evolving Hybrid Supercar Landscape For a decade now, I’ve been immersed in the thrilling, often volatile, world of high-performance automotive en
gineering. I’ve witnessed firsthand the relentless pursuit of speed, the evolution of driver engagement, and the seismic shifts that technology brings to an industry seemingly built on tradition. And few shifts have been as profound, or as compelling, as the embrace of electrification by the titans of the supercar kingdom. At the forefront of this revolution, pushing boundaries with an audacious blend of combustion prowess and electric synergy, stands the Ferrari 296 GTB. This isn’t just a car; it’s a statement, a bold declaration of intent that continues to redefine what a modern supercar can, and should, be. Even as the horizon promises even more potent rivals, the 296 GTB remains a benchmark, a testament to Maranello’s enduring genius. The arrival of the Ferrari 296 GTB in 2022 marked a pivotal moment, a departure from a lineage steeped in the thunderous roar of V8 engines. Forgoing the multi-award-winning twin-turbo V8, Ferrari made a daring leap into uncharted territory with a new twin-turbocharged V6, intricately augmented by electric power. This bold move positioned the 296 GTB at the vanguard of a segment that, until recently, had been hesitant to fully commit to hybrid powertrains. In its initial phase, the 296 GTB’s most direct contemporary was the Lamborghini Huracán, a car celebrated for its naturally aspirated V10 symphony and raw, unadulterated charisma. While perhaps outgunned in sheer horsepower by the electrified Ferrari, the Huracán’s V10 soundtrack was an undeniable part of its allure during its twilight years. Then there was the ferocious McLaren 720S, a car that mastered the art of twin-turbo V8 power and razor-sharp agility. While the subsequent McLaren 750S represents a refinement of that potent formula, focusing on an unparalleled power-to-weight ratio, the new 903bhp, 10,000rpm hybrid titan from Sant’Agata Bolognese – the Lamborghini Temerario – emerges as a direct riposte to Maranello’s 819bhp electrified Berlinetta. Let’s be clear: the Ferrari 296 GTB packs a formidable punch. Featuring an all-new, 120-degree, twin-turbocharged V6 engine paired with an electric motor, delivering its prodigious power solely to the rear wheels (a distinct characteristic compared to the SF90 Stradale), the 819bhp 296 GTB truly shattered conventional supercar paradigms. The sheer magnitude of its power output is staggering, prompting contemplation on the ultimate limits of such performance escalation and, perhaps more practically, where one might even harness such capabilities. But those are questions for another time. What is undeniable is the 296 GTB’s historical significance. It is the first V6-powered Ferrari road car to bear the iconic Prancing Horse emblem (the exquisite 246 GT Dino, while a V6, never officially carried the badge during its production run). It also pioneers Ferrari’s ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger configuration and, crucially, is a plug-in hybrid with a usable electric-only range of approximately 15 miles. This compact V6, a marvel of modern engineering, sits low within a newly developed aluminum chassis. Notably, the wheelbase has been reduced by 50mm compared to its V8 predecessors, with occupants positioned slightly further forward, contributing to an even more focused driving experience. The electric motor itself contributes a substantial 165bhp and 232lb ft of torque, while the V6 engine, in isolation, generates a breathtaking 654bhp and 546lb ft. The combined output culminates in the headline figure of 819bhp. Ferrari, with characteristic discretion, refrains from quoting a combined peak torque figure. This is likely due to the intricate and dynamic interplay between the engine and electric motor, but it’s safe to assume the total torque delivery is nothing short of colossal. Furthermore, this V6 powertrain offers a weight saving of approximately 30kg over a comparable Ferrari V8, and it’s seamlessly mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The substantial battery pack, a sleek, oblong structure, is cleverly housed behind the seats, maintaining the car’s optimal weight distribution.
No Ferrari would be complete without an arsenal of acronyms representing its sophisticated electronic chassis management systems. For the 296 GTB, Ferrari has developed an advanced six-axis sensor unit, dubbed the 6w-CDS (six-way Chassis Dynamic Sensor). This ingenious system meticulously measures acceleration and rotational velocity across the X, Y, and Z planes, effectively replacing traditional yaw sensors. In concert with a sensor integrated into the steering rack, it grants the car an unprecedented understanding of both driver inputs and real-time grip levels at the tire contact patches. This data feeds into systems like Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, working in tandem to maximize cornering speeds while upholding unwavering stability and driver confidence. It also enables a novel ABS-evo system (a fitting moniker) that, in RACE mode and above, leverages the 296’s brake-by-wire technology to significantly reduce braking distances and enhance braking performance during trail-braking maneuvers into corners. In a fascinating development, Ferrari is deploying its active aerodynamics not for drag reduction, but for downforce generation. The manufacturer quotes a substantial 360kg of downforce at 155mph, with an impressive 100kg of that attributed to the deployable rear wing. The thermal management of this complex hybrid powertrain is equally sophisticated. Two radiators at the front handle engine and gearbox cooling, supplemented by two additional condensers for the battery. Hot air is efficiently expelled from the underbody, ensuring it doesn’t disrupt the airflow directed to the intercoolers flanking the car. The discreet apertures beneath the headlamps are dedicated to cooling the brakes, while the aerodynamically integrated wing on the roofline plays a crucial role in creating a ‘virtual’ rear screen, meticulously channeling air towards the rear of the car as if guided by a precisely sculpted surface. The majority of the 296’s substantial downforce is generated from beneath the car. Here, meticulous attention has been paid not only to airflow management and the rear diffuser but also to the crucial underbody ground clearance, optimizing the effectiveness of these potent downforce-generating elements. The pre-production 296 GTBs we had the privilege of experiencing on track at their launch were all equipped with the optional Assetto Fiorano package. This performance enhancement swaps the standard dampers for advanced Multimatic units, derived directly from GT racing applications. It also incorporates additional carbon fiber aerodynamic elements on the front end, contributing an extra 20kg of front downforce. The package further specifies increased use of carbon fiber within the cabin, notably for the door panels, and on the exterior, leading to an overall weight saving of 12kg. This can be further amplified to 15kg by opting for the Lexan rear engine cover. For those seeking the ultimate track-day setup, the Assetto Fiorano option also allows for the fitment of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, replacing the already formidable standard Pilot Sport 4S. Aesthetic personalization is also catered for, with Fiorano-equipped cars eligible for an exterior graphics package inspired by the iconic 250LM from the 1960s. Having had extensive encounters with the 296 GTB in various configurations, its aesthetic appeal is undeniable. It’s a visually arresting machine, presenting a form unlike anything else on the road, subtly echoing the evocative lines of the 1960s 250LM, even without the polarizing graphics pack. Performance and Driving Dynamics: A Symphony of Power and Precision Initiating motion in the 296 GTB is an intuitive process. A double press of the lower section of the steering wheel boss, followed by engaging first gear, brings the car to life. The 296 defaults to Hybrid mode, silently gliding away on electric power alone unless intentionally overridden via the haptic driver mode selectors on the steering wheel. As long as the battery retains sufficient charge and throttle inputs are measured, the car will remain in silent EV operation, offering an unexpected and serene urban cruising experience. For those seeking pure electric propulsion, a dedicated ‘eDrive’ mode can be enforced, irrespective of powertrain demands. Beyond this, the Performance and Qualifying modes unlock the full potential of the hybrid powertrain. In Performance mode, both power sources collaborate, with a secondary objective of maintaining battery charge. Qualifying mode, as the name suggests, prioritizes absolute maximum performance, with battery state of charge becoming a secondary concern. The ability to glide silently through picturesque villages offers an unexpected delight. The damping sophistication is truly remarkable, making it a surprisingly comfortable companion for covering significant distances. Even the practicality front gains a nod, with a reasonably sized luggage compartment in the ‘frunk’ – a welcome departure from the SF90 Stradale’s more constrained space. However, the question that truly ignites the enthusiast’s curiosity is: what does it feel like when both the internal combustion engine and the electric motor are unleashed in their full fury? The answer becomes immediately apparent when planting the throttle from low revs in a high gear. The 296 GTB surges forward with an instantaneous response, a surge of torque that momentarily makes one question the very need for gear changes, such is its potency. Yet, there are eight gears to exploit, and an engine that eagerly spins to 8500rpm. When the 296 is truly uncorked, the resulting experience is nothing short of astonishing. The acceleration figures – a blistering 0-62mph in under 2.9 seconds and a top speed exceeding 205mph – translate into a relentless, hold-on-tight sensation that borders on the visceral, inducing nervous laughter yet proving strangely addictive. This is an immensely rapid machine. And the soundtrack? It’s a compelling blend of turbocharger effects overlaid with the tuneful, characterful rasp of the V6. Ride and Handling: The Art of Agile Deception What truly sets the 296 GTB apart is the astonishing responsiveness of its chassis. Ferrari’s assertion that the car was designed to be ‘fun to drive’ is not mere marketing hyperbole; it’s an inherent characteristic. The car feels exceptionally agile without ever tipping into nervousness. The steering, typically light and rapid as expected from a Ferrari, also conveys an impressive level of road feel and detail. While the grip levels are predictably immense, the car also offers a remarkable degree of throttle adjustability, a trait that invariably brings a wide grin to the driver’s face. Despite its dry weight of 1470kg, the 296 GTB feels significantly lighter. There’s a palpable lack of inertia throughout the entire vehicle, encouraging the driver to work with the car, making minute inputs and reveling in its uncanny accuracy and precision. Engaging CT Off mode provides an extraordinary level of freedom, with the underlying reassurance of an intelligent electronic safety net. However, even with all electronic aids deactivated, the 296’s inherent balance allows for a degree of playful oversteer that one might not associate with a car producing 819bhp. On a circuit, the 296 GTB has the remarkable ability to seemingly compress even the longest straights. What becomes even more evident is its precision as a scalpel-sharp instrument. While the power is readily available to break rear-wheel traction at numerous points around a lap, the 296 is exquisitely sensitive to braking and steering inputs. It quickly becomes apparent that precision with the controls yields the greatest rewards. The turn-in accuracy and response are phenomenal, dramatically shortening the entry phase into every corner. Rather than easing into turns and allowing loads to build gradually, the 296 settles instantly, aided by its Multimatic dampers. The hyper-quick steering harmonizes beautifully with the enhanced roll support provided by the Assetto Fiorano setup. Even for drivers accustomed to more conventional sports cars, the sheer speed, precision, and agility of the 296 GTB are a profound joy, consistently delivering an exhilarating experience lap after lap. Interior: A Digital Frontier with a Familiar Feel The cabin architecture will be instantly recognizable to anyone who has experienced the SF90 Stradale, as the 296 GTB inherits much of its layout. The fully digital interface and its accompanying haptic switchgear, liberally applied to the steering wheel and traditional Ferrari stalks flanking it, represent a notable departure. While undoubtedly complex, it’s also true that a vast amount of information needs to be conveyed. The most significant point of contention, however, lies in the occasional need for a second press to register simple operations, or uncertainty as to whether an input has been successfully acknowledged. Nevertheless, the overall ambiance within the cabin feels undeniably special, befitting a machine of this caliber. The Verdict: A New Era of Ferrari Supercar Excellence In the competitive landscape of automotive journalism, particularly in “Car of the Year” assessments, a razor-thin margin can separate true contenders. In the 2022 evo Car of the Year competition, the McLaren Artura and the Ferrari 296 GTB found themselves locked in an incredibly tight battle. The judges’ ballots were almost perfectly split, with three narrowly favoring the Ferrari and three giving a slight edge to the McLaren.
Those who placed the 296 GTB ahead – including myself, and esteemed colleagues like Henry Catchpole and Ollie Marriage – were captivated by its sheer brilliance. Jethro Bovingdon effused, “What a spectacular car. Beautiful to behold, outrageously fast, astonishingly exploitable, and technically ingenious. Its V6 demonstrates to McLaren how to downsize while amplifying the drama, and it matches the Artura in sheer control but feels decidedly more playful and indulgent.” Richard Meaden’s assessment, which resonated with many of us, declared it, “The first genuinely beautiful Ferrari since the F355.” He continued, “The hybrid system is exceptionally well executed, and it doesn’t alter the driving experience as much as I had feared. Perhaps this is because we’ve become accustomed to the torquey characteristics of turbocharged V8s in the 488 and F8. The 296 is stonkingly quick, but it doesn’t rely solely on brute speed; the V6’s inherent character, coupled with a sound that is always sweet and evolves with throttle input, adds significant depth.” The Ferrari’s hybrid integration was widely lauded for its seamlessness. However, a significant point of contention arose on the final night of testing when a depleted battery left one of the cars stranded, with no apparent means of revival. To Ferrari’s credit, they had pre-emptively warned of this possibility and provided detailed guidance on how to mitigate it. Yet, the scenario of an owner facing a similar predicament is not inconceivable. As Gallagher pointed out, “For a company that pioneered individual rear-wheel steering, the inability to engineer a simple fail-safe to prevent this is a significant oversight.” Fortunately, this incident occurred after all cars had been scored. Ferrari’s signature ultra-quick steering, while impressive, divided opinion. The brake feel, while effective, didn’t quite match the absolute best in class. And the touchscreen interface faced widespread criticism for its complexity. Despite these critiques, the 296 GTB possessed an irresistible allure. Vivian shared, “I initially thought I wouldn’t be overly impressed with the Fezza – too complex, rather gratuitous points of differentiation. But I ended up somewhat bewitched: its uncanny ability to change direction, its astonishing damping, its looney-tunes levels of grip, and the linearity of its seemingly endless power…” There’s a palpable sense of a return to form for Ferrari, particularly when contrasted with the somewhat aloof reception of the SF90 Stradale the previous year. As Sutcliffe aptly put it, “The 296 is far more successful because its technical sophistication, especially the integration of its hybrid technology, feels much more natural and far less intrusive.” Gallagher concurred, stating, “Ferrari has taken so much from the SF90, learned from that car, and distilled it into a series-production model that stands as one of its very best.” – Peter Tomalin, ecoty 2022. Pricing and Competitive Set: Redefining the Supercar Equation When a vehicle is imbued with such an extensive array of cutting-edge technology, there’s always a risk that it might become less than the sum of its parts. This was a sentiment we encountered with the SF90 Stradale, which, while dazzling with its power, left us somewhat unsettled by its challenging driving characteristics. The 296 GTB, however, represents a different proposition entirely. As evidenced by its joint third-place finish alongside the McLaren Artura in the 2022 evo Car of the Year awards, it possesses a far more organic feel. Its masterful blend of power and engaging dynamics strikes a remarkable sweet spot, effectively redefining the capabilities and expectations of a supercar priced in the £250,000-plus bracket. Rumors of a Versione Speciale variant, codenamed “Versione Speciale,” are circulating, promising even more power, performance, and intensity. The critical question will be whether this enhanced iteration retains the standard 296’s almost inexplicable natural driving feel. It is precisely this aspect – the nuanced, engaging driving experience – that we fervently hope Lamborghini has prioritized in the development of its hybrid Temerario supercar. Over 900bhp is an almost obscene amount of power for a series-production supercar, and if the rest of the vehicle isn’t meticulously engineered to complement it, that power can easily become overwhelming. If Lamborghini has truly nailed the execution – and their success with the Revuelto provides ample reason for optimism – then we are poised for an epic twin test, potentially featuring nearly 1700bhp of hybrid hypercar might. Alternatively, we could expand this into a 2400bhp triple threat by including the McLaren 750S. This machine, which must now be described as the relative minnow of the group with “only” 740bhp, counters with a remarkably petite 1389kg kerb weight, delivering a highly competitive power-to-weight ratio.
