Ferrari 296 GTB: A Hybrid Masterpiece Redefining Supercar Dynamics For a decade, the automotive landscape has been a battleground for automotive prowess, with titans of performance pushing the boundar
ies of engineering and driver engagement. As an industry veteran with ten years immersed in the world of high-octane machinery, I’ve witnessed firsthand the evolution of the supercar, and few vehicles have captured my attention quite like the Ferrari 296 GTB. This isn’t just another iteration of an iconic marque; it’s a bold declaration of intent, a V6 hybrid supercar that has fundamentally shifted our perception of what’s possible at the pinnacle of automotive engineering. The arrival of the Ferrari 296 GTB in 2022 marked an unprecedented pivot for the legendary Italian marque. Departing from the revered, multi-award-winning twin-turbo V8 architecture, Ferrari embraced a new, electrifying path with a twin-turbocharged V6 engine augmented by electric power. This strategic shift placed the Ferrari 296 GTB at the vanguard of a segment that, while hinting at electrification, was still largely anchored in traditional combustion. In its initial years, the Ferrari 296 GTB found its primary adversary in the Lamborghini Huracán, a car defined by its naturally aspirated V10 symphony. While the Huracán offered a visceral, audio-visual assault that captivated enthusiasts, its comparative power output paled against the technological might of the Ferrari 296 GTB. Adding to the competitive fray was the ferocious McLaren 720S, a V8-powered marvel built on the principle of power-to-weight supremacy. However, the horizon now glimmers with the promise of the Lamborghini Temerario, a 903bhp, 10,000rpm hybrid behemoth, representing Lamborghini’s most direct challenge yet to Maranello’s electrified Berlinetta, the 819bhp Ferrari 296 GTB. Let’s be clear: the Ferrari 296 GTB possesses firepower that is nothing short of astonishing. Featuring an all-new 120-degree, twin-turbo V6 engine seamlessly integrated with an electric motor, this marvel channels its immense power exclusively to the rear wheels, a deliberate departure from the all-wheel-drive layout of the SF90. This configuration, producing a combined 819bhp, shattered conventional supercar paradigms. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by such prodigious power figures, leading one to ponder the ultimate ceiling of this power escalation—a question the Ferrari 296 GTB emphatically answers for now—and, perhaps more pressingly, where one might responsibly deploy such blistering performance. But that, as they say, is a story for another day. What truly sets the Ferrari 296 GTB apart is its historical significance. It proudly bears the mantle of the first V6-powered Ferrari road car. While the evocative 246 GT Dino shared a V6 configuration, it never officially wore the Prancing Horse emblem during its production run. Furthermore, the Ferrari 296 GTB pioneers Ferrari’s “hot-vee” turbocharger installation and embraces plug-in hybrid technology, offering an impressive EV-only range of approximately 15 miles. The compact V6 is strategically mounted low within a bespoke aluminum chassis, featuring a wheelbase shortened by 50mm compared to its V8 predecessors. This thoughtful packaging also shifts the occupants slightly forward, enhancing the sense of intimacy with the machine. The electric motor contributes a substantial 165bhp and 232lb ft of torque. On its own, the V6 delivers a breathtaking 654bhp and 546lb ft. The headline combined output is a staggering 819bhp. While Ferrari judiciously refrains from quoting a combined peak torque figure, likely due to the complex interplay between the V6 and electric motor, it’s safe to assume the figure is nothing short of colossal. Crucially, this V6 unit is approximately 30kg lighter than Ferrari’s V8 engines and is paired with an exquisite eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The battery pack, a slender oblong structure, is neatly housed behind the seats, contributing to the car’s remarkable weight distribution. No Ferrari would be complete without an arsenal of acronyms representing cutting-edge electronic chassis control systems. For the Ferrari 296 GTB, the engineers have developed the sophisticated six-axis sensor known as 6w-CDS, capable of meticulously measuring acceleration and rotational velocity across the X, Y, and Z planes. This advanced sensor supplants traditional yaw sensors, and when integrated with the sensor on the steering rack, grants the car an unparalleled understanding of driver intent and instantaneous grip levels at the tire contact patch. This intelligence orchestrates systems like Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, maximizing cornering speeds while safeguarding stability and occupant confidence. It also enables the novel ABS-evo system, a fittingly named advancement that, in RACE mode and above, leverages the 296’s brake-by-wire technology to not only shorten braking distances but also significantly enhance braking performance during trail-braking maneuvers into corners. In a groundbreaking move, Ferrari has deployed its active aerodynamics technology not to minimize drag, but to maximize downforce. The manufacturer claims an impressive 360kg of downforce at 155mph, with a remarkable 100kg of this generated by the deployable rear wing. The thermal management of the Ferrari 296 GTB is a masterpiece of engineering. Two radiators in the front fascia diligently cool the engine and gearbox, complemented by two additional condensers dedicated to the hybrid battery. Hot air is expelled from the underbody, strategically routed to avoid disrupting the airflow directed to the intercoolers along the car’s flanks. The discreet apertures below the headlights are dedicated to cooling the brakes, while the aerodynamically integrated wing at the roofline generates a “virtual” rear screen, channeling air towards the rear of the car as if guided by an invisible surface. The lion’s share of the Ferrari 296 GTB’s downforce is sculpted beneath the car, where meticulous attention has been paid to the underbody airflow, the rear diffuser, and, critically, the underbody’s ground clearance, to amplify the effectiveness of these downforce-generating elements.
Our initial encounters with the Ferrari 296 GTB on track were exclusively with models equipped with the optional Assetto Fiorano package. This performance-enhancing option replaces the standard dampers with advanced Multimatic units derived from GT racing and adds further carbon fiber aerodynamic elements to the front, boosting front downforce by an additional 20kg. The Assetto Fiorano package also incorporates more carbon fiber throughout the cabin, including door panels, and on the exterior, contributing to a net weight saving of 12kg. This saving can be further enhanced to 15kg by specifying the optional Lexan rear engine cover. For the ultimate track-focused setup, Assetto Fiorano-equipped cars can be fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, superseding the standard Pilot Sport 4S. A visually striking exterior graphics package, inspired by the iconic 250LM of the 1960s, is also available for Fiorano variants. Having spent considerable time scrutinizing the Ferrari 296 GTB “in the metal,” I can attest to its striking aesthetic. It possesses a unique allure, unlike anything else on the road, subtly evoking the spirit of the 1960s 250LM, even without the polarizing graphics option. Performance and Driving Dynamics: A Symphony of Power and Precision Engaging the Ferrari 296 GTB is an experience in itself. A double-press of the lower section of the steering wheel boss and a selection of first gear brings the powertrain to life. The car defaults to Hybrid mode, initiating its journey on electric power alone unless overridden by the driver via the haptic control “buttons” situated on the left side of the steering wheel. As long as throttle inputs remain measured and the battery holds a charge, the Ferrari 296 GTB will continue its silent glide on pure electric propulsion. For those seeking a more immediate response, the “e-drive” mode can be explicitly engaged, forcing the car into all-electric operation irrespective of powertrain demands. Alternatively, Performance and Qualifying modes offer escalating levels of engagement. In Performance mode, both power sources operate in tandem, with a focus on maintaining battery charge for sustained spirited driving. Qualifying mode, however, prioritizes absolute maximum performance, disregarding the battery’s state of charge. The serene quietude of gliding through urban landscapes is a surprisingly delightful facet of the Ferrari 296 GTB. The damping sophistication renders it a remarkably comfortable companion for long journeys, and the inclusion of a reasonably practical luggage compartment in the “frunk” adds a welcome touch of everyday usability, a luxury not afforded by the SF90. However, the true magic of the Ferrari 296 GTB is unveiled when both the internal combustion engine and the electric motor are unleashed. The sensation when planting the throttle at low revs in a high gear is nothing short of breathtaking. The Ferrari 296 GTB surges forward with an immediate, lag-free ferocity that momentarily makes one question the necessity of gear selection, such is its sheer potency. Yet, with eight gears to exploit and an engine that willingly revs to 8500rpm, the full unleashing of the Ferrari 296 GTB’s capabilities is an absolutely startling experience. The acceleration figures—0-62mph in under three seconds and a top speed exceeding 205mph—translate into a visceral, hold-on-tight sensation accompanied by nervous laughter, a sensation that is both bordering on uncomfortable and inexplicably addictive. This is a car of immense velocity, and its soundtrack is equally compelling, a masterful blend of turbocharger effects overlaying the tuneful V6 rasp. What truly elevates the Ferrari 296 GTB from a mere straight-line missile to a true driver’s machine is the astounding responsiveness of its chassis. Ferrari’s assertion that the car was engineered to be “fun to drive” is not an exaggeration. It exhibits a level of agility that is remarkable, yet it never descends into nervousness. The steering, characteristically light and rapid, is also imbued with a level of tactile feedback that allows the driver to feel intimately connected to the road. While the grip levels are predictably immense, the Ferrari 296 GTB remains remarkably throttle-adjustable, inspiring a level of driver confidence that inevitably brings a wide grin to the face. Despite its 1470kg dry weight, the Ferrari 296 GTB feels significantly lighter, exhibiting a delightful lack of inertia that encourages fluid, precise inputs. The CT Off mode provides a generous safety net of electronic intervention, ensuring that even when exploring the limits, an intelligent guardian is looking out for you. However, even with all electronic aids deactivated, the inherent balance of the Ferrari 296 GTB allows for a degree of controllable oversteer that one might not expect in a car producing 819bhp. On the racetrack, the Ferrari 296 GTB possesses the uncanny ability to seemingly shrink even the longest straights. Its true brilliance, however, lies in its surgical precision. The sheer volume of power is more than capable of breaking rear-wheel traction at numerous points around the circuit. Yet, the car is exquisitely sensitive to braking and steering inputs, quickly teaching the driver that precision is the key to unlocking its full potential. The turn-in accuracy and response are phenomenal, dramatically shortening the entry phase of every corner. Instead of easing into turns and allowing loads to build, the Ferrari 296 GTB settles instantaneously, its Multimatic dampers and hyper-quick steering perfectly complementing the enhanced roll support of the Assetto Fiorano setup. Even for a driver transitioning from a more conventional sports car, the speed, precision, and agility of the Ferrari 296 GTB are nothing short of phenomenal, offering an addictive thrill lap after lap. Interior Experience: High-Tech Futurism with a Learning Curve The interior architecture of the Ferrari 296 GTB will feel familiar to those who have experienced the SF90, as it borrows heavily from that flagship model. The entirely digital interface, coupled with its accompanying haptic switchgear, presents a notable learning curve. These controls are liberally applied to the steering wheel and traditional Ferrari pods flanking it. While undeniably complex, it’s important to acknowledge the sheer volume of information the system is designed to convey. The primary frustration arises from simple operations that occasionally require a second press to register, or an ambiguity in confirming whether an input has been successful. Nevertheless, the cabin exudes an undeniable sense of occasion and exclusivity, making it a truly special place to inhabit. Evo Car of the Year 2022 Verdict: A Transformative Machine The accolades for the Ferrari 296 GTB speak volumes. At the prestigious Evo Car of the Year 2022 awards, the competition was incredibly close, with the McLaren Artura running neck-and-neck. Judges were evenly split, with three narrowly favoring the Ferrari and three giving a slight edge to the McLaren. The proponents of the Ferrari 296 GTB—myself included, along with colleagues Meaden and Bovingdon—were captivated. Jethro enthused, “What a spectacular car. Beautiful to look at, outrageously fast, amazingly exploitable, and so technically clever. Its V6 shows McLaren how to downsize but turn up the drama, and it matches the Artura in terms of sheer control but feels a bit more playful and indulgent.”
Dickie offered a sentiment echoed by many: “The first genuinely beautiful Ferrari since the F355.” He continued, “The hybrid system works very well and doesn’t change the driving experience as much as I’d feared. Probably because we’ve already grown accustomed to the torquey characteristics of the turbocharged V8 in the 488 and F8. The 296 is stonkingly quick, but doesn’t rely solely on speed thanks to the character of the V6, which has a soundtrack that’s always sweet and changes with throttle opening.” The seamless integration of the Ferrari 296 GTB’s hybridisation was widely lauded. However, a notable incident occurred on the final night of testing where a flat battery left the car immobile, with no apparent means of revival. While Ferrari had pre-warned of such possibilities and provided detailed cautionary measures, the scenario of an owner finding themselves stranded is not inconceivable. As Gallagher remarked, “that the company who introduced individual rear-wheel steering to its cars can’t engineer a simple fail-safe to prevent this happening is a huge oversight.” Fortunately for the Ferrari 296 GTB, this occurred after all scoring had been completed. Ferrari’s signature ultra-quick steering divided opinion, and the brake feel, while competent, didn’t quite match the very best in the class. The tech interface also faced widespread criticism for its complexity. Despite these points, the Ferrari 296 GTB proved to be irresistibly seductive. Vivian admitted, “I thought I wouldn’t like the Fezza all that much – too complex, rather gratuitous points of difference. But I ended up somewhat bewitched: the spooky way it changes direction; its amazing damping and looney-tunes levels of grip; the linearity of seemingly never-ending power…” Peter Tomalin, reflecting on the Evo Car of the Year 2022 awards, declared, “The Ferrari 296 GTB is way more successful because its technical sophistication, and the integration of its hybrid technology in particular, feels much more natural, and far less intrusive.” He added, “Ferrari has taken so much from the SF90, learnt from that car, and distilled it into a series production model that’s one of its very best.” Price Point and Competitive Landscape: Redefining the Supercar Segment The sheer density of technology incorporated into the Ferrari 296 GTB inherently carries the risk of the whole being less than the sum of its parts. This was a characteristic we observed with the SF90, which, while dazzling in its power, proved somewhat unnerving due to its challenging driving dynamics. The Ferrari 296 GTB, however, represents a distinct departure. As evidenced by its joint third-place finish alongside the McLaren Artura at the Evo Car of the Year 2022, it feels far more organic. Its potent blend of power and engaging dynamics strikes a perfect balance, effectively redefining what a supercar in the £250,000-plus bracket can achieve. A forthcoming Versione Speciale variant of the Ferrari 296 GTB is anticipated this year, promising even greater power, performance, and intensity. The enduring hope is that the standard Ferrari 296 GTB’s remarkably natural feel will be preserved. It is this very aspect of the Ferrari 296 GTB’s inherent character that we trust Lamborghini has prioritized in the development of its hybrid Temerario supercar. Over 900bhp is an almost obscene amount of power to wield in a production supercar; it possesses the potential to overwhelm if the supporting chassis and dynamics are not meticulously resolved. If Lamborghini has indeed achieved the right balance—and their success with the Revuelto provides ample reason for optimism—then we are poised for an extraordinary twin-test showdown. One could even contemplate a gargantuan 2400bhp triple threat, including the McLaren 750S. Though now absurdly described as the “minnow” of this elite class with “only” 740bhp, the McLaren compensates with a remarkably petite 1389kg kerb weight, translating into a highly competitive power-to-weight ratio.
