The 2025 Ferrari 296 GTB: A Hybrid Masterpiece Redefining Supercar Dynamics Against the Lamborghini Temerario For a decade, I’ve been immersed in the electrifying world of performance automobiles, wit
nessing firsthand the relentless evolution of automotive engineering. In that time, few vehicles have truly shifted the paradigm, but the Ferrari 296 GTB 2025 stands as a shining example of such a momentous leap. Even with the formidable shadow of the 903bhp, 10,000rpm Lamborghini Temerario looming on the horizon, this Italian marvel continues to captivate and astound. This isn’t just a review; it’s an in-depth analysis of a machine that has fundamentally reshaped the supercar landscape, offering a glimpse into the future of high-performance driving. The very arrival of the 296 GTB in 2022 marked an unprecedented turning point for Ferrari’s mid-engined supercar lineage. Forgoing the celebrated, multi-award-winning twin-turbo V8 in favor of a revolutionary twin-turbocharged V6, augmented by sophisticated electric power, the 296 GTB proactively asserted its dominance in a segment where hybrid power was only just beginning its full-scale adoption. It was a bold statement, a clear indication of Ferrari’s commitment to innovation. At its debut, the 296 GTB’s most direct rival was the Lamborghini Huracán, a darling of the naturally aspirated V10 symphony. While it might have trailed in raw horsepower, the Huracán offered an intoxicating blend of V10 charisma and unadulterated auditory drama, particularly in its golden years. Another formidable contender was the McLaren 720S, a masterclass in twin-turbo V8 prowess. While the subsequent McLaren 750S represents an evolutionary step, building upon an already potent formula with a relentless focus on power-to-weight supremacy, the 903bhp, 10,000rpm, hybrid-powered Temerario is unmistakably Lamborghini’s direct riposte to Maranello’s 819bhp electrified Berlinetta. It’s a testament to the fierce competition and innovation driving this pinnacle of automotive design. Indeed, the Ferrari 296 GTB 2025 possesses truly awe-inspiring firepower. Featuring an entirely new, 120-degree, twin-turbocharged V6 engine seamlessly integrated with an electric motor, exclusively driving the rear wheels (a departure from the SF90’s all-wheel-drive configuration), the 819bhp 296 GTB boldly shattered established supercar conventions. This is a car designed not just to compete, but to redefine. It’s easy to become fixated on such staggering power figures, and one might naturally ponder the eventual ceiling of such performance escalation. The question of where one would even utilize such immense capability also arises – but that’s a discussion for another time. The significance of the 296 GTB extends far beyond its headline numbers. It holds the distinction of being the first V6-powered road-going Ferrari (the exquisite 246 GT Dino, while a V6, never bore the iconic Prancing Horse emblem during its production). Furthermore, it’s the first Ferrari to feature a ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger installation and, crucially, it’s a plug-in hybrid, offering an electric-only range of approximately 15 miles. This compact V6 is strategically positioned low within a new aluminum chassis, with a wheelbase 50mm shorter than its V8 predecessors, subtly repositioning the occupants slightly further forward for an enhanced sense of connection. The electric motor alone contributes a formidable 165bhp and 232lb ft of torque, while the V6 engine independently churns out a staggering 654bhp and 546lb ft. The combined output culminates in the headline figure of 819bhp. Ferrari, however, intelligently refrains from quoting a combined peak torque figure, likely due to the complex interplay between the engine and electric motor. Nevertheless, it’s safe to surmise that the resultant torque is nothing short of prodigious. In total, the V6 unit shaves approximately 30kg compared to Ferrari’s V8 engines and is mated to a lightning-fast eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The battery pack, a sleek, oblong structure, is cleverly housed behind the seats, maintaining the car’s perfect weight distribution. No Ferrari would be complete without an arsenal of acronyms denoting its sophisticated electronic chassis management systems. For the 296 GTB, Ferrari has engineered a groundbreaking six-axis sensor, dubbed the 6w-CDS (six-way Chassis Dynamic Sensor). This advanced system meticulously measures acceleration and rotational speed across the X, Y, and Z planes. It effectively replaces the conventional yaw sensor and, in conjunction with a sensor integrated into the steering rack, provides the car with an unparalleled understanding of driver input and real-time grip levels at the tire contact patch. This information is then used to optimize systems like Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, maximizing cornering speeds while maintaining unwavering stability and occupant security. A particularly noteworthy innovation is the new ABS-evo system, active in RACE mode and above. Leveraging the 296’s brake-by-wire technology, it not only shortens braking distances but also enhances braking performance during trail-braking maneuvers into corners, a technique often reserved for pure track machines. For the first time in its history, Ferrari is deploying its active aerodynamics technology not for drag reduction, but for augmenting downforce. The company quotes an impressive figure of 360kg of downforce at 155mph, with a substantial 100kg of that generated by the deployable rear wing. This intricate aerodynamic package is a testament to Ferrari’s dedication to cutting-edge engineering. The cooling system is equally sophisticated. Two radiators in the front manage engine and gearbox temperatures, complemented by two additional condensers dedicated to cooling the battery pack. Hot air is expertly expelled beneath the car, ensuring it doesn’t disrupt the airflow directed to the intercoolers positioned along the flanks. The subtle apertures beneath the headlamps are dedicated to feeding cool air to the brakes, while the wing integrated into the roofline acts as a ‘virtual’ rear screen, expertly channeling air towards the rear of the car as if guided by a meticulously sculpted surface. The majority of the 296’s downforce is ingeniously generated from beneath the car. Here, significant attention has been paid not only to the airflow management and the rear diffuser but also to the underbody’s ground clearance, crucial for maximizing the effectiveness of these downforce-generating surfaces. The pre-production Ferrari 296 GTB 2025 models we sampled on a closed circuit were all equipped with the optional Assetto Fiorano package. This performance-oriented upgrade replaces the standard dampers with advanced Multimatic units, directly derived from GT racing technology. It also incorporates additional carbon fiber aerodynamic elements on the front fascia, boosting front downforce by a notable 20kg. The cabin benefits from further carbon fiber application, including door panels, and additional exterior carbon elements contribute to an overall weight saving of 12kg. This figure increases to 15kg if the optional Lexan rear engine cover is specified. For the ultimate grip, Fiorano package buyers can opt for Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, a step up from the already capable standard Pilot Sport 4S. The Fiorano cars can also be customized with an exterior graphics package, paying homage to the iconic 250LM of the 1960s.
Having spent considerable time with the 296 GTB in person, its aesthetic appeal is undeniable. It’s a strikingly beautiful machine, possessing a unique character that sets it apart from anything else on the road. Even without the optional graphics, its design evokes the spirit of the legendary 250LM, a timeless design that continues to captivate. Performance and Acceleration: A New Benchmark Initiating movement in the 296 GTB is elegantly simple: a double press on the lower section of the steering wheel boss, followed by selecting first gear. The car defaults to Hybrid mode, initiating its journey on electric power alone unless the driver dictates otherwise through the intuitive haptic driver mode controls on the left side of the steering wheel. With judicious throttle application, the 296 can maintain purely electric propulsion, provided the battery retains sufficient charge. Drivers have the option to explicitly engage ‘eDrive’ mode, overriding any powertrain demands, or select from the more potent Performance and Qualifying modes. In these settings, both the internal combustion engine and the electric motor work in concert. Performance mode prioritizes exhilarating driving while also ensuring the battery remains adequately charged, whereas Qualifying mode unleashes the car’s absolute maximum performance, with little regard for the battery’s state of charge. The experience of silently gliding through tranquil villages is an unexpected revelation. The damping system is so remarkably sophisticated that it transforms the car into a surprisingly comfortable cruiser, perfectly capable of covering long distances with ease. Even luggage space is reasonably accommodated in the ‘frunk’ at the front, a welcome practicality absent in the SF90. However, the question we all yearn to answer is: what does it feel like when both the V6 engine and the electric motor are unleashed in their full glory? The answer lies in the car’s response when you firmly plant the throttle in a high gear at low revs. The 296 GTB simply surges forward, devoid of any discernible lag, leaving you momentarily questioning the very concept of gear selection, such is its instantaneous potency. Yet, there are eight gears to exploit, and an engine that eagerly winds to 8500rpm. When you truly unleash the Ferrari 296 GTB 2025, the effect is nothing short of astonishing. As the performance figures suggest (a breathtaking 0-62mph time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed exceeding 205mph), the rate of acceleration is akin to a thrilling, albeit slightly unnerving, rollercoaster ride, inducing a peculiar blend of nervous laughter and an almost addictive exhilaration. This is an exceptionally rapid automobile. The auditory experience is equally captivating, with a rich tapestry of turbocharger effects harmonizing with the tuneful rasp of the V6. Ride and Handling: A Symphony of Precision and Control What truly sets the 296 GTB apart is the remarkable responsiveness of its chassis, and Ferrari’s unwavering commitment to making this car ‘fun to drive’ has clearly paid dividends. It exhibits a captivating agility without ever bordering on nervousness. The steering, a hallmark of Ferrari engineering, is typically light and exceptionally quick, but it also offers a surprising level of tactile feedback. While the grip levels are predictably immense, the car remains remarkably throttle-adjustable in a manner that invariably brings a wide grin to the driver’s face. Despite its stated dry weight of 1470kg, the 296 GTB feels significantly lighter. There’s a palpable lack of inertia that encourages the driver to work harmoniously with the car, making subtle inputs and reveling in its precision and accuracy. The CT Off (ChassisTraction Control Off) mode offers a remarkable degree of freedom, allowing for audacious driving maneuvers with the reassuring knowledge that an incredibly sophisticated electronic brain is constantly monitoring and safeguarding the vehicle. Even with all electronic aids deactivated, the inherent balance of the 296 GTB allows it to be coaxed into controlled oversteer with a finesse one might not expect from a car producing 819bhp. On the track, the 296 GTB possesses the uncanny ability to dramatically compress even the longest straights. What becomes even more apparent is its surgical precision. The power is readily available to break rear-wheel traction at numerous points around the lap, but the 296 GTB is also incredibly sensitive to braking and steering inputs. This sensitivity teaches the driver that precision with the controls yields the greatest rewards. The turn-in accuracy and responsiveness are phenomenal, dramatically shortening the entry phase of every corner. Instead of gently easing the car into turns and allowing loads to build, the 296 GTB settles into its line instantaneously, thanks to its Multimatic dampers and hyper-quick steering that harmonizes beautifully with the enhanced roll support of the Assetto Fiorano setup. Even if you’ve just stepped out of a more conventional sports car, the sheer speed, precision, and agility of the 296 GTB are phenomenal and an absolute joy to experience lap after lap. Interior: A Fusion of Form and Future The interior architecture will feel familiar to anyone who has experienced the SF90, as the 296 GTB borrows heavily from its stablemate. The entirely digital interface, coupled with its complimentary haptic switchgear, presents a learning curve. These controls are liberally applied to the steering wheel and the traditional Ferrari pods flanking it. While undoubtedly complex, it’s important to acknowledge the sheer volume of information the system needs to convey. The most frustrating aspect can be that seemingly simple operations sometimes require a second press to register, or it’s unclear whether a press has been successfully registered at all. Nevertheless, the cabin undeniably exudes a sense of occasion and specialness. evo Car of the Year 2022 Verdict: A New Champion Emerges “Now it gets serious,” began the evo judges’ assessment. “When the scores were tallied, there wasn’t even a hair’s breadth between the McLaren Artura and the 296 GTB. The judges were perfectly split: three of us narrowly preferred the Ferrari to the McLaren; three scored the Macca ahead by a whisker.”
The three judges who placed the 296 GTB in front were Jethro Bovingdon, Ollie Marriage, and himself. “What a spectacular car,” enthused Jethro. “Beautiful to look at, outrageously fast, amazingly exploitable, and so technically clever. Its V6 shows McLaren how to downsize while turning up the drama, and it matches the Artura in terms of sheer control but feels a bit more playful and indulgent.” “The first genuinely beautiful Ferrari since the F355,” was Dickie Meaden’s verdict, a sentiment echoed by many of us. “The hybrid system works very well,” he continued, “and doesn’t change the driving experience as much as I’d feared. Probably because we’ve already become accustomed to the torquey characteristics of the turbocharged V8 in the 488 and F8. The 296 is stonkingly quick, but doesn’t rely solely on speed thanks to the character of the V6, which has a soundtrack that’s always sweet and changes with throttle opening.” The Ferrari’s hybridisation was widely praised for its seamless integration, although on the final night of testing, the car was left stranded after the battery depleted with no apparent means of revival. To be fair, Ferrari had preemptively warned of this possibility and detailed the necessary precautions. However, it’s not inconceivable that an owner could find themselves in a similar predicament. As Gallagher aptly put it, “the company that introduced individual rear-wheel steering to its cars can’t engineer a simple fail-safe to prevent this happening is a huge oversight.” Fortunately for the 296 GTB, this incident occurred after all cars had been scored. Ferrari’s signature ultra-quick steering divided opinion, and the brake feel didn’t quite match the very best in the group. The tech interface was also widely criticized for its over-complexity. However, these minor drawbacks were overshadowed by the 296 GTB’s irresistible allure. “I thought I wouldn’t like the Fezza all that much – too complex, rather gratuitous points of difference,” said Vivian, “but I ended up somewhat bewitched: the uncanny way it changes direction; its amazing damping and looney-tunes levels of grip; the linearity of seemingly never-ending power…” “It’s a real return to form for Ferrari, after the SF90 left us cold last year. As Sutcliffe observed: ‘The 296 is way more successful because its technical sophistication, and the integration of its hybrid technology in particular, feels much more natural, and far less intrusive.’ And Gallagher agreed: ‘Ferrari has taken so much from the SF90, learnt from that car, and distilled it into a series-production model that’s one of its very best.’” – Peter Tomalin, evo Car of the Year 2022. Price and The Future of Supercar Rivalry When a car is so heavily laden with cutting-edge technology, there’s always the inherent risk that it might become less than the sum of its parts. This was a sentiment evo encountered with the SF90, a car that dazzled with its power output but ultimately unnerved with its challenging driving characteristics. However, the Ferrari 296 GTB 2025 represents a fundamentally different proposition. As we discovered during the 2022 evo Car of the Year awards, where it secured joint third place alongside the McLaren Artura, it feels remarkably organic. Its masterful blend of power and engaging dynamics strikes a perfect sweet spot, effectively redefining what a supercar in the £250,000 ballpark can achieve. A Versione Speciale variant of the 296 is anticipated this year, promising even greater power, performance, and intensity. Our fervent hope is that the standard 296’s inexplicably natural driving feel is preserved. It is this very aspect of the 296 GTB’s constitution that we hope Lamborghini has prioritized when honing its hybrid Temerario supercar. Over 900bhp is an obscene amount of power for a series-production supercar, and it could easily corrupt the entire driving experience if the rest of the car isn’t resolved to meet it. If Lamborghini has truly hit the mark – and the sheer brilliance of the Revuelto provides ample reason for optimism – then we are on the cusp of a truly epic 1700bhp twin test. Alternatively, we could expand this to a monumental 2400bhp triple threat with the inclusion of the McLaren 750S, which, absurdly, must now be described as the minnow of the class with a mere 740bhp.
