The Electrified Prancing Horse: Ferrari 296 GTB – A New Benchmark in Hybrid Supercar Performance For a decade, the roar of naturally aspirated engines and the visceral thrill of raw combustion have de
fined the supercar landscape. I’ve spent countless hours behind the wheel, experiencing firsthand the evolution of automotive titans. Now, as we stand on the precipice of 2025, the automotive world, particularly the hypercar segment, is undergoing a seismic shift. Ferrari, a marque synonymous with automotive passion and performance, has boldly embraced electrification with the Ferrari 296 GTB, a machine that doesn’t just meet the future but actively shapes it. This isn’t just a car; it’s a statement, a masterclass in engineering that redefines what a hybrid supercar can and should be. My experience with performance machines over the past ten years tells me this: the Ferrari 296 GTB is more than just a rival; it’s a benchmark that competitors, like the highly anticipated Lamborghini Temerario, will undoubtedly be measured against. The arrival of the Ferrari 296 GTB in 2022 marked an unprecedented departure for Ferrari’s mid-engined supercar lineage. Eschewing the beloved, multi-award-winning twin-turbo V8 in favor of a revolutionary twin-turbo V6 augmented by electric power, the 296 GTB has thrust itself into a higher echelon of the supercar segment, a realm still grappling with the full transition to hybrid propulsion. Its introduction challenged the established order, a landscape previously dominated by the sonorous V10 of the Lamborghini Huracán and the formidable twin-turbo V8 of the McLaren 720S. While the subsequent McLaren 750S represents an evolution of that theme, emphasizing power-to-weight supremacy, the 903bhp, 10,000rpm twin-turbo V8 hybrid Temerario from Lamborghini is a clear, defiant response to Maranello’s 819bhp electrified Berlinetta. The Ferrari 296 GTB has ignited a new era, and its potent hybrid powertrain is at the heart of this revolution. This is a machine that commands attention with its sheer firepower. The all-new 120-degree, twin-turbo V6, paired with an electric motor, drives exclusively the rear wheels – a distinct approach compared to the all-wheel-drive configuration of the SF90 Stradale. This focused application of power, delivering a colossal 819bhp, has effectively shattered conventional supercar paradigms. It’s easy to be awestruck by such an immense power output and to ponder the ultimate limits of such escalation – a question that undoubtedly looms large for rivals like the Lamborghini Temerario – and, more practically, where one might even unleash such capabilities. The Ferrari 296 GTB holds several significant distinctions. It is the first V6-powered Ferrari road car, a lineage tracing back to the delightful, though never officially badged as a Ferrari, 246 GT Dino. It also pioneers Ferrari’s ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger installation, a layout that places the turbochargers within the engine’s V-angle for improved packaging and responsiveness. Furthermore, its plug-in hybrid architecture offers an all-electric range of approximately 15 miles, a feature that broadens its usability without compromising its supercar credentials. The compact V6 engine is mounted low within a newly developed aluminum chassis, featuring a wheelbase reduced by 50mm compared to its V8 predecessors, positioning the occupants slightly further forward for a more focused driving experience. The electric motor alone contributes an impressive 165bhp and 232lb ft of torque, while the V6 engine independently produces a staggering 654bhp and 546lb ft. Combined, these systems deliver the headline 819bhp figure. Ferrari wisely refrains from quoting a combined peak torque figure, likely due to the intricate interplay between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor, but it’s safe to assume this figure is nothing short of colossal. Impressively, the V6 unit itself is approximately 30kg lighter than Ferrari’s V8 engines. Mated to a lightning-fast eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, the powertrain is complemented by a long, oblong battery pack strategically located behind the seats. This integrated approach to electrification is a testament to Ferrari’s engineering prowess, a core competency I’ve observed evolve over my decade in the industry.
As one would expect from a Ferrari, the Ferrari 296 GTB is equipped with a sophisticated suite of electronic chassis systems. A standout innovation is the six-axis sensor, dubbed 6w-CDS. This advanced system meticulously measures acceleration and rotational speed across the X, Y, and Z planes, effectively replacing traditional yaw sensors. In conjunction with a sensor on the steering rack, it grants the car an unparalleled understanding of both driver inputs and real-time grip levels at the tire contact patches. This data is then fed into systems like Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, working in concert to maximize cornering speeds while upholding unwavering stability and security. This technological sophistication is crucial for a vehicle with such immense power, and it’s a hallmark of modern hybrid supercar performance. This advanced sensor suite also enables a groundbreaking system: ABS-evo. Activated in RACE mode and above, this system leverages the 296’s brake-by-wire technology to not only shorten braking distances but also enhance braking performance during trail braking into corners. This precision in handling is paramount for any true enthusiast, and the Ferrari 296 GTB delivers it in spades. For the first time in its history, Ferrari is employing its active aerodynamics technology not to reduce drag, but to actively generate downforce. The automaker quotes an impressive 360kg of downforce at 155mph, with a substantial 100kg of this figure attributable to the deployable rear wing. The car’s aerodynamic design is a masterclass in functional artistry. Twin radiators in the front manage engine and gearbox cooling, while two additional condensers handle battery thermal management. Hot air is expelled from underneath the car, carefully channeled to avoid interfering with the cooling air directed to the intercoolers located along the flanks. The subtle apertures below the headlamps are dedicated to brake cooling, and the integrated wing at the rear of the roofline creates a ‘virtual’ rear screen, effectively guiding airflow to the car’s rear. The majority of the Ferrari 296 GTB’s downforce is generated beneath the car, where meticulous attention has been paid to airflow management, the rear diffuser, and crucially, the underbody height to optimize the effectiveness of these downforce-generating surfaces. Our initial circuit evaluations of the Ferrari 296 GTB were conducted with the optional Assetto Fiorano package fitted. This performance-oriented upgrade replaces the standard dampers with Multimatic units derived from GT racing and adds further carbon aerodynamic elements to the nose, contributing an additional 20kg of front downforce. The package also incorporates increased use of carbon fiber throughout the cabin, including the door panels, and on exterior components, resulting in an overall weight saving of 12kg. Opting for the Lexan rear engine cover shaves off an additional 3kg. For those seeking the ultimate track-focused experience, the Assetto Fiorano package offers Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires as an option, superseding the standard Pilot Sport 4S tires. Assetto Fiorano-equipped cars can also be specified with an exterior graphics package, inspired by the iconic 250LM of the 1960s, adding a touch of historical flair to this modern marvel. Having spent considerable time with the Ferrari 296 GTB in person, its aesthetic appeal is undeniable. It possesses a distinct visual identity, unlike anything else on the road, subtly echoing the lines of the 1960s 250LM, even without the more polarizing graphics package. This design prowess, combined with its groundbreaking technology, solidifies its position as a truly desirable luxury supercar. Initiating movement in the Ferrari 296 GTB is as simple as a double-press on the lower section of the steering wheel boss, followed by engaging first gear. The car defaults to Hybrid mode, allowing it to depart silently on electric power alone, unless commanded otherwise via the intuitive haptic driver mode selectors on the left side of the steering wheel. With judicious throttle application, and sufficient battery charge, the Ferrari 296 GTB can continue its journey on pure electric power. For those seeking to maximize range, a dedicated EV mode can be enforced, overriding powertrain demands. Alternatively, Performance and Qualifying modes engage both power sources for ultimate exhilaration. Performance mode balances power delivery with battery regeneration, while Qualifying mode unleashes the full might of the powertrain, regardless of the battery’s state of charge. The experience of gliding silently through urban landscapes is surprisingly delightful, a testament to the sophisticated damping that renders the Ferrari 296 GTB a remarkably comfortable cruiser. The ‘frunk’ up front offers a respectable amount of luggage space, a welcome practical consideration absent in the SF90. However, the true magic, and the aspect that truly excites any enthusiast, lies in unleashing the combined power of the V6 and electric motor. The sensation when planting the throttle at low revs in a higher gear is nothing short of instantaneous. The Ferrari 296 GTB simply surges forward, devoid of any perceptible lag, making one question the very need for gear changes such is its potency. Yet, with eight gears at its disposal and an engine revving to a thrilling 8500rpm, the full fury of the Ferrari 296 GTB is an absolutely startling revelation. The acceleration figures – a blistering 0-62mph in under three seconds and a top speed exceeding 205mph – translate to a pace that is both exhilarating and almost unnerving, bordering on uncomfortable, yet undeniably addictive. This is a seriously rapid machine. And the sound? A symphony of turbocharger effects interwoven with the tuneful rasp of the V6 creates an auditory experience as captivating as its performance. The responsiveness of the Ferrari 296 GTB’s chassis is truly remarkable, validating Ferrari’s assertion that the car’s primary objective was to be ‘fun to drive’. It exhibits exceptional agility without succumbing to nervousness. The steering is typically light and rapid, yet remarkably communicative, offering a wealth of feedback. While grip levels are predictably immense, the car’s inherent adjustability via the throttle allows for an engaging, grin-inducing driving experience that is rarely found in cars of this caliber. Despite its dry weight of 1470kg, the Ferrari 296 GTB feels significantly lighter, exhibiting an almost complete lack of inertia. This allows the driver to work with the car, making small, precise inputs and reveling in its accuracy and refinement. The CT Off mode provides a reassuring safety net, with advanced electronic systems monitoring and intervening subtly, yet even with all systems disengaged, the Ferrari 296 GTB’s inherent balance allows for predictable and controllable oversteer, a feat one might not expect from a car producing 819bhp. On the racetrack, the Ferrari 296 GTB has the uncanny ability to make even long straights feel compressed. Its sharp, precise nature becomes even more apparent. While the prodigious power is readily available to break rear-end traction at multiple points around the circuit, the Ferrari 296 GTB is also exquisitely sensitive to braking and steering inputs, rewarding precision with amplified performance. The turn-in accuracy and response are phenomenal, dramatically shortening the entry phase of every corner. Instead of gradually easing into turns, the Ferrari 296 GTB settles instantly, aided by the Multimatic dampers and the hyper-quick steering, which complements the enhanced roll support of the Assetto Fiorano setup. Even for drivers accustomed to more mature sports cars, the speed, precision, and agility of the Ferrari 296 GTB are simply phenomenal and consistently exhilarating.
The cabin architecture will feel familiar to those who have experienced the SF90 Stradale, as the Ferrari 296 GTB draws heavily from its larger sibling. The fully digital interface and its accompanying haptic switchgear, liberally applied across the steering wheel and surrounding pods, present a learning curve. While undoubtedly complex, the sheer volume of information to be conveyed is substantial. However, the frustration arises when simple operations occasionally require a second attempt or when it’s unclear if an input has been registered at all. Despite these minor ergonomic quibbles, the cabin undoubtedly exudes a sense of occasion and exclusivity, fitting for a next-generation supercar. In the evo Car of the Year 2022 awards, the Ferrari 296 GTB faced stiff competition. The verdict highlighted the incredibly close nature of the contest, with only a “fag paper” separating it from the McLaren Artura. Judges were evenly split, with three narrowly preferring the Ferrari and three favoring the McLaren. Those who championed the Ferrari 296 GTB lauded its spectacular design, outrageous speed, astonishing exploitability, and technical cleverness. Jethro Bovingdon praised its V6 for demonstrating how to downsize while amplifying drama, and noted its control capabilities, comparing it favorably to the Artura for its playful and indulgent character. Dickie Meaden described it as “the first genuinely beautiful Ferrari since the F355,” a sentiment echoed by many. He commended the seamless integration of the hybrid system, noting it didn’t detract from the driving experience as much as feared, likely due to the familiarity with turbocharged V8 torque characteristics from previous models. He emphasized that the Ferrari 296 GTB’s stonking pace isn’t its sole virtue, attributing its character to the V6’s sweet and responsive soundtrack. While the hybrid system’s seamless integration was widely praised, a concerning incident occurred where the car was left stranded after the battery depleted, with no obvious means of recovery. Ferrari had indeed cautioned about this possibility and outlined preventative measures. However, the oversight of the company that pioneered individual rear-wheel steering not engineering a simple fail-safe was a significant concern voiced by Gallagher. Fortunately, this event transpired after the scoring was complete. Ferrari’s signature ultra-quick steering divided opinion, and the brake feel didn’t quite match the class leaders. The tech interface also faced widespread criticism for its complexity. Nevertheless, the Ferrari 296 GTB proved irresistibly seductive. Vivian, initially skeptical of its perceived complexity, found himself “bewitched” by its uncanny directional changes, astonishing damping, and “looney-tunes” levels of grip, coupled with a linearity of seemingly unending power. Peter Tomalin’s concluding remarks for evo’s ecoty 2022 assessment captured the essence of the Ferrari 296 GTB’s triumph. He noted a significant return to form for Ferrari, contrasting it favorably with the SF90. He stated, “The 296 is far more successful because its technical sophistication, and the integration of its hybrid technology in particular, feels much more natural, and far less intrusive.” Gallagher concurred, asserting that Ferrari had learned valuable lessons from the SF90, distilling them into a series-production model that stands as one of its very best. The risk with such heavily technology-laden vehicles is that they can become less than the sum of their parts, a critique leveled at the SF90 by evo, which, despite its dazzling power, unnerved with its challenging driving characteristics. However, the Ferrari 296 GTB represents a significant departure. Its achievement of joint third place alongside the McLaren Artura at the evo Car of the Year 2022 underscores its more organic feel. The harmonious blend of power and engaging dynamics strikes a real sweet spot, effectively redefining the £250,000-ish supercar segment. A more extreme Versione Speciale variant is anticipated, promising even greater power and intensity, with the hope that the standard 296’s inexplicably natural feel is retained. It is precisely this refined, driver-centric experience that we hope Lamborghini has meticulously honed in its hybrid Temerario supercar. Over 900bhp is an obscene amount of power for a series-production supercar, and it can easily corrupt the entire driving experience if the supporting chassis and dynamics aren’t expertly resolved. If Lamborghini has succeeded – and the brilliance of the Revuelto provides ample reason for optimism – then we are poised for a truly monumental twin-test, pitting these titans of performance automotive engineering against each other. Alternatively, we could expand this to a staggering 2400bhp triple threat by including the McLaren 750S. While now humorously described as the “minnow” of the class with “only” 740bhp, its relatively petite 1389kg kerb weight delivers a highly competitive power-to-weight ratio. The McLaren’s rawness, ergonomic excellence, sharp steering, and deft chassis control offer a distinct, and perhaps more connected, experience compared to the comparatively remote feel of the Ferrari. The Ferrari 296 GTB price reflects its cutting-edge technology and brand prestige, placing it in direct competition with these formidable rivals. The Ferrari 296 GTB is not merely a car; it’s an experience, a testament to where automotive engineering is headed. It represents a bold leap into the future, offering a driving dynamic that is both exhilarating and remarkably accessible.
