The Maranello Masterpiece: Reimagining the Ferrari 296 GTB for the Future of Supercar Performance For a decade, I’ve navigated the exhilarating, and often volatile, landscape of high-performance autom
otive engineering. In that time, I’ve witnessed tectonic shifts in how we define and achieve automotive excellence. The advent of electrification wasn’t a whisper; it was a roar that demanded adaptation. And nowhere has this transformation been more profound, more captivating, than in the rarefied air of the supercar segment. The Ferrari 296 GTB, a machine that has graced our roads for a few years now, stands as a pivotal testament to this evolution. Even as rivals like the forthcoming Lamborghini Temerario promise stratospheric power figures, the 296 GTB remains a benchmark, a car that redefined expectations with its audacious V6 hybrid configuration. The supercar zeitgeist underwent a seismic alteration with the arrival of the 296 GTB in 2022. Forgoing the lauded, multi-award-winning twin-turbo V8 that had long been a Ferrari hallmark, Maranello embraced a revolutionary path. They introduced a potent new twin-turbocharged V6 engine, augmented by an electric motor, ushering the 296 GTB into a higher echelon of supercar performance where hybrid power is no longer a novelty but an imperative. At its debut, the 296 GTB’s natural adversaries were the Lamborghini Huracán, with its evocative naturally-aspirated V10, and the formidable McLaren 720S, which championed its twin-turbo V8 prowess. While the McLaren 750S builds upon an established formula, emphasizing a superior power-to-weight ratio, the 903bhp, 10,000rpm twin-turbo V8 hybrid Temerario from Lamborghini represents a direct challenge, a bold statement against Ferrari’s 819bhp hybridized Berlinetta. Make no mistake, the 296 GTB possesses an arsenal of firepower that commands respect. Featuring an all-new, 120-degree, twin-turbo V6 engine seamlessly integrated with an electric motor, driving exclusively the rear wheels (a departure from the SF90’s AWD setup), the 819bhp 296 GTB boldly fractured conventional supercar paradigms. The sheer magnitude of its output is difficult to overlook, prompting contemplation on the relentless escalation of performance and, crucially, the practical application of such prodigious power. This groundbreaking model marks several significant firsts for Ferrari. It is the first V6-powered road-legal Ferrari (the exquisite 246 GT Dino, while bearing the Dino badge, never officially wore the Prancing Horse emblem in its era). It is also the first to incorporate a ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger arrangement and boasts a plug-in hybrid system, offering an all-electric range of approximately 15 miles. The compact V6 is mounted low within a bespoke aluminum chassis, featuring a wheelbase reduced by 50mm compared to its V8 predecessors, which positions the occupants slightly further forward. The electric motor alone contributes an impressive 165bhp and 232lb ft of torque, while the V6 engine independently produces a remarkable 654bhp and 546lb ft. The combined output reaches the headline figure of 819bhp. Ferrari, wisely perhaps, refrains from quoting a combined peak torque figure, likely due to the complex interplay between the engine and electric motor, but it’s safe to assume the total is truly formidable. Crucially, the V6 unit is approximately 30kg lighter than Ferrari’s V8 engines and is mated to an advanced eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The battery pack, a slender, elongated structure, is housed neatly behind the seats, optimizing weight distribution. No Ferrari would be complete without an array of sophisticated electronic chassis control systems, and the 296 is no exception. Ferrari has introduced its advanced six-axis sensor, dubbed the 6w-CDS, capable of precisely measuring acceleration and rotational velocity across the X, Y, and Z planes. This innovative system supersedes traditional yaw sensors. In conjunction with a sensor integrated into the steering rack, it provides the car with an unparalleled understanding of driver inputs and real-time grip levels at the tire contact patch. This allows for optimized operation of systems like Side Slip Control and the active E-Diff, maximizing cornering speeds while upholding unwavering stability and driver confidence. Furthermore, it enables the novel ABS-evo system, active in RACE mode and above. Leveraging the 296’s brake-by-wire technology, ABS-evo not only shortens braking distances but also enhances braking performance during trail braking into corners, a critical technique for maximizing lap times.
For the first time in its history, Ferrari is deploying its active aerodynamics technology not for drag reduction, but for the strategic generation of downforce. The company states a figure of 360kg at 155mph, with an impressive 100kg of that attributed to the deployable rear wing. The thermal management of this hypercar is a masterclass in engineering. Two radiators are positioned in the front for engine and gearbox cooling, supplemented by two additional condensers dedicated to cooling the battery pack. Exhaust airflow is strategically directed underneath the car to avoid interfering with the cooling air channeled to the intercoolers along the flanks. Small apertures located below the headlights serve to draw air for brake cooling, while the roofline-integrated rear spoiler ingeniously creates a ‘virtual’ rear screen, guiding air to the car’s posterior as if it were flowing over a solid surface. The majority of the 296’s substantial downforce is generated from beneath the car, where meticulous attention has been paid not only to airflow management and the rear diffuser but also to the precise underbody ride height, optimizing the effectiveness of these downforce-generating elements. The initial track-focused iterations of the 296 GTB we experienced were all equipped with the optional Assetto Fiorano package. This performance-enhancing suite replaces the standard dampers with specialized Multimatic units derived from GT racing. It also incorporates additional carbon fiber aerodynamic elements on the front, boosting front-end downforce by an additional 20kg. Further weight reduction is achieved through the extensive use of carbon fiber in the cabin (such as the door panels) and exterior components, contributing to an overall weight saving of 12kg, which can be extended to 15kg with the optional Lexan rear engine cover. An additional enhancement available with the Assetto Fiorano pack is the fitment of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, a significant step up from the standard Pilot Sport 4S. These track-focused cars can also be personalized with an exterior graphics package, artfully inspired by the iconic 250LM from the 1960s. Having had the privilege of extensive interaction with the 296 GTB, its aesthetic is undeniably captivating. It possesses a distinct visual identity, a departure from convention, and echoes the elegant lines of the 1960s 250LM, even without the often-divisive graphic embellishments. Performance Dynamics: Unlocking the Hybrid Symphony Initiating motion in the 296 GTB is an elegantly simple affair: a double-press of the lower button on the steering wheel boss, followed by selecting first gear. The vehicle defaults to Hybrid mode, utilizing electric propulsion for initial acceleration, unless explicitly overridden through the haptic driver mode selectors on the left side of the steering wheel boss. With judicious throttle application, the 296 can glide silently on electric power alone, provided sufficient battery charge. An ‘eDrive’ mode can be forcibly engaged, irrespective of powertrain demands, or drivers can select ‘Performance’ or ‘Qualifying’ modes. In these more aggressive settings, both power sources unite. ‘Performance’ aims to maintain battery charge while delivering robust power, whereas ‘Qualifying’ prioritizes absolute maximum output, disregarding battery status. The serene experience of gliding through urban landscapes is a surprisingly delightful facet of the 296 GTB. Its sophisticated damping imbues the cabin with remarkable comfort, making it an unexpectedly adept companion for long journeys. The ‘frunk’ compartment offers a respectable amount of luggage space, a welcome addition absent in the SF90. However, the true allure, the aspect that ignites the enthusiast’s soul, lies in unleashing the combined might of the V6 and electric motor. A mere dab of the throttle at low revs in a higher gear elicits an instantaneous surge of acceleration, so potent that it momentarily prompts the question of the necessity of gear changes. Yet, the eight-speed transmission is there to be savored, and the engine, capable of revving to 8500rpm, transforms the experience when truly unleashed. The effect is nothing short of astonishing. As the figures suggest – a blistering 0-62mph sprint in approximately 2.9 seconds and a top speed approaching 205mph – the rate of acceleration is an exhilarating, almost visceral, experience. It induces a peculiar blend of hold-on-tight adrenaline and nervous laughter, yet it is undeniably addictive. This is a car of profound velocity, accompanied by a captivating auditory experience, where the subtle growl of the V6 is masterfully overlaid with thrilling turbocharger acoustics. Chassis Mastery: Agility Redefined What truly distinguishes the 296 GTB is the exceptional responsiveness of its chassis. Ferrari’s commitment to making this a “fun to drive” car is palpably evident. It exhibits a sublime agility without succumbing to nervousness. The steering, as expected from Ferrari, is typically light and rapid, but crucially, it is brimming with tactile feedback. While grip levels are predictably immense, the car remains remarkably throttle-adjustable, fostering an infectious sense of engagement and pure driving joy. Despite its dry weight of approximately 1470kg, the 296 GTB feels considerably lighter. There’s an inherent lack of inertia that encourages an intuitive, symbiotic relationship with the driver, rewarding precise, small inputs with exceptional accuracy and finesse. Engaging ‘CT Off’ mode offers remarkable freedom, underpinned by the reassurance of Ferrari’s intelligent electronic safety net. However, even with all electronic aids disengaged, the 296’s innate balance allows for controlled drifts and playful oversteer, a feat seemingly improbable in a car with such immense power. On the track, the 296 GTB possesses the uncanny ability to compress even the longest straights, revealing its surgical precision. While the power is ample to break rear-end traction at numerous points on the circuit, the 296 also exhibits profound sensitivity to braking and steering inputs. Mastering these controls is paramount to unlocking its full potential and achieving the greatest rewards. The turn-in accuracy and immediacy are phenomenal, dramatically shortening the entry phase of every corner. Instead of gradually loading the tires, the 296 immediately settles into its line, its hyper-quick steering harmonizing beautifully with the enhanced roll support provided by the Assetto Fiorano suspension. Even for a driver accustomed to potent sports cars, the speed, precision, and agility of the 296 are simply breathtaking, delivering an addictive joy lap after lap. Interior Sanctuaries: A Fusion of Tech and Tradition The cabin architecture of the 296 GTB will feel familiar to anyone who has experienced the SF90 Stradale, as it borrows extensively from that flagship model. The fully digital interface, coupled with its array of haptic touch controls liberally distributed across the steering wheel and adjacent pods, presents a notable learning curve. While the complexity is undeniable, it’s important to acknowledge the sheer volume of information and functions that need to be conveyed. The primary frustration arises from instances where simple operations require multiple attempts to register, or where there’s ambiguity as to whether an input has been successfully recognized. Nevertheless, the interior undeniably exudes a sense of occasion and exclusivity. A New Era of Ferrari Excellence: Expert Perspectives In 2022, our team at evo magazine engaged in a rigorous comparison that ultimately saw the McLaren Artura and the 296 GTB locked in an incredibly tight contest for our coveted “Car of the Year” title, with the judges narrowly split in their preferences. Jethro Bovingdon described the Ferrari as “spectacular,” praising its stunning aesthetics, outrageous speed, remarkable tractability, and sheer technical brilliance. He noted how the V6 powertrain demonstrated a superior approach to downsizing compared to McLaren, injecting a dramatic flair while maintaining comparable levels of control to the Artura but with a more playful and indulgent character. Dickie Meaden lauded the 296 GTB as “the first genuinely beautiful Ferrari since the F355,” a sentiment echoed by many. He commended the seamless integration of the hybrid system, noting that it did not detract from the driving experience as he had initially feared, perhaps due to the familiarity with the torquey nature of turbocharged V8s in previous models. He highlighted its blistering pace but emphasized that its appeal extended beyond mere speed, attributing this to the character of the V6 engine, which offers a consistently pleasing soundtrack that evolves with throttle application.
While the Ferrari’s hybridisation received widespread acclaim for its seamless operation, a notable incident occurred on the final night of our testing where the battery was depleted, leaving the car immobile without an immediate solution. Ferrari had indeed cautioned about this possibility and outlined preventative measures. However, the scenario of an owner finding themselves in a similar predicament is not inconceivable. As Gallagher aptly put it, “that the company which pioneered individual rear-wheel steering cannot engineer a simple fail-safe to prevent this is a huge oversight.” Fortunately for the 296 GTB, this issue arose after all scoring was completed. Ferrari’s characteristic ultra-quick steering divided opinion amongst our testers, and the brake pedal feel, while competent, didn’t quite match the benchmark set by the very best in the group. The technological interface also faced widespread criticism for its excessive complexity. Despite these points, the 296 GTB proved to be irresistibly seductive. Vivian expressed his initial skepticism, anticipating the car to be overly complex and gratuitously different, only to find himself “somewhat bewitched” by its uncanny directional changes, phenomenal damping, astonishing levels of grip, and the seemingly unending linearity of its power delivery. Peter Tomalin, reflecting on the evo Car of the Year 2022 verdict, concluded that the 296 GTB represented a significant return to form for Ferrari, a stark contrast to the SF90 which had left them feeling somewhat underwhelmed the previous year. He stated, “The 296 is far more successful because its technical sophistication, and the integration of its hybrid technology in particular, feels much more natural, and far less intrusive.” Gallagher concurred, observing that Ferrari had absorbed valuable lessons from the SF90, distilling that knowledge into a series production model that stands as one of its finest achievements. The Competitive Arena: Price, Rivals, and the Future The inherent risk with any vehicle heavily laden with cutting-edge technology is the potential for it to become less than the sum of its parts. This was a sentiment we experienced with the SF90, which, despite its dazzling power, left us unnerved by its challenging driving characteristics. The 296 GTB, however, represents a distinct evolution. Its placement in joint third place at the evo Car of the Year 2022 alongside the McLaren Artura underscores its exceptional equilibrium. It strikes a harmonious balance between raw power and engaging dynamics, effectively redefining the supercar landscape at its approximately £250,000 price point. An even more potent Versione Speciale variant is anticipated, promising heightened performance and intensity. The crucial question remains whether this future iteration will retain the 296’s inexplicably natural and intuitive driving feel. It is precisely this aspect of the 296 GTB’s inherent character that we hope Lamborghini has prioritized in the development of its hybrid Temerario. A figure exceeding 900bhp is an almost obscene level of power for a production supercar, and without a meticulously resolved chassis to match, such potency can prove detrimental. If Lamborghini has succeeded, as their impressive Revuelto suggests they might, then a truly monumental twin test between these two hybrid titans beckons. Alternatively, the equation could be expanded to a mind-boggling 2400bhp triple threat, incorporating the McLaren 750S. In this context, the McLaren, with its ‘mere’ 740bhp, might seem like the minnow. However, its remarkably svelte 1389kg kerb weight affords it a highly competitive power-to-weight ratio. The McLaren’s raw, unadulterated character, ergonomic excellence, razor-sharp steering, and beautifully deft chassis demonstrably distinguish it from the comparatively more remote feel of the Ferrari. Ferrari 296 GTB Specifications: Engine: 2992cc, twin-turbocharged V6, plus electric motor Transmission: Eight-speed, dual-clutch, active E-diff Combined Power: 819bhp @ 8000rpm Combined Torque: 546lb ft @ 6250rpm Weight: 1470kg (dry) (566bhp/ton) 0-62mph: 2.9 seconds Top Speed: 205mph Price: Starting from £250,000+ The Ferrari 296 GTB isn’t just a car; it’s a statement of intent for the future of performance motoring. It blends electrifying innovation with the soul-stirring DNA of Maranello. For those seeking the pinnacle of automotive engineering and an unparalleled driving experience, the 296 GTB represents an irresistible proposition.
